View Full Version : Bad weather tragedy- I hate atlanta!!!

:( She's dead...my baby...gone...I have to share this...ATLANTA DOT and my apartment complex can suck my D@#$.
Recently Atlanta, GA had a freak winter storm with freezing temperatures. Due to Atlanta's lack of equipment & DOT to handle light snow falls. The dusting became ice. More snow accumulated on top of the ice creating dangerous conditions.
So here I am on the highway driving home from work. With the idiots (4WD & FWD non-driving speeders) to my left and A-holes (granny gear consipated slow pokes) to my right. Watching others fish tail even take flight I snicker to myself. "Atlantians can't drive worth a crap." I manage to get off the highway without injury.
I hop on the main roads and there a mess. I get though all that to finally pull into my development. The Jerk offs decide to leave and not salt the road ways.
I creep through to the mailbox, grab up my mail, hop back in the car and continue to my building.
Now something told me to park my car at the mail box and walk to my apt. But no. I had to be a nipple head (I have other creative words but this will do)
Now My apt building is off a curved road top of a hill...( you see it already don't you.) I begin my climb.
No problem, window is down, I hear water and ice rocks cool.
Around midway through the curve the ground noise stops..then again so does the car. Tires start spinning. The car gradually begins to slide not only to the left into the curve but back down the hill. I immediately start to try and gain traction and lay off the gas in a repeated motion. But By that time I was already over the curb and sliding down the wooden part of the hill.
Then.
The wheels caught something. One Flip...two Flips...Crash.
A large tree broke our desent.
I sat on the curb in tears as the cops came and the tow truck pulled her out the sticks.
Bad part...Liability insurance...total loss.

+1 on the crappy atlanta weather. So many wrecks and roads just suck!
I'm on of those slow pokes. Hey, at least I get home safely :)
And today, same thing happened to me except for that there was a car coming towards me, going down the hill on pure ICE. With God's grace, I missed the car by millimeters!! It was crazy!! Thank you God for keeping my 540 rear quarter panel in factory condition!!!

Skimmed the responses but I'm willing to bet that they're mostly along the same lines as:
The car's dead, but you're not. Yet again an e34 shows its toughness in a wreck and someone walked away. Be thankful. You can always buy another car.

Glad you're okay, must have been terrifying. We got about an inch or two of snow last night and the roads were are slippery as could be (we got two feet a week or two back but you tend to get stuck instead of slide around with that). I hope you'll eventually find your way into another E34 but in any case good luck.

And the BMW E34 saves another life. :buttrock
Very sorry to hear of your loss - but how many other vehicles could have protected you in the same way? Okay, how many vehicles under $3K could have...?
As sucky as it is right now, let it go with a crooked smile. It's just stuff and it gave its life for you. Get another one when you can afford it. Glad to hear you're still able to sit here and tell us the story. In this crazy world, that's something to be thankful for.

That's too bad. Last year I saw and photographed the results of a similar accident. Somebody coming down their driveway, lost it on the ice, and slid down the hill and crashed into a nice big stone column. Blew both airbags and took out the hood and bumper.
I think twice about driving up or down a shiny hill now. . .

Wow that does suck..
At least you are not hurt .
The snow/ice just missed us although its about 10 degree's here now.... In MS that might as well be -30.. LOL...
I dislike the cold... snow and ice...

Thank You everyone for the love. I'm ok. Only thing hurt was my pride.
:buttrockRespect...Much Love.
I'll get the pictures up after I go to the tow yard and sign off on the car.
Yes euros are all I ever owned except for this 91 Acura Legend coupe slush box. My first and last japanese car. Pretty car (theft recovery). Engine was way too powerful for the 4 spd trans to handle (common problem with them). Trans ate itself while traveling from Nashville, TN to Atlanta,GA.

That's the thing. I've lived up north most of my life. I'm used to it bad weather as well. But they don't sell snow tires or chains here. You already know. Up north the first word of snow or freezing conditions the snow tires go on and stay on till first day of spring. So I was screwed all the way around.

Dude, I'm sorry for your loss. I"m really glad to hear you're ok, but so sorry about the car.
That's just one of those things you can't plan for. I wouldn't expect you to have snow tires in Hotlanta. We keep chains on the car here in Portland because we do get nasty weather 1-2 times each winter. But damn, that really sucks.
Hope you're back in an e34 soon.

Sorry for your loss my Brother. I'm out here training in ATL right now (actually Norcross)for a couple weeks (have 1 more to go) and it's been quite chilly here. But what's surprises is me is that people just don't slow down. There flying by me at 75 to 80 when it's cold and NOT icy and still flying by mean when it IS cold AND icy, idiots. I was coming back from Canton earlier and was quite surprised how some where driving. Leaving next Saturday, for all you Atlantains, all take the cold weather with me, ok. :D...:buttrock

Agreed that dedicated snows are a Godsend, but not necessarily in an area that doesn't get consistent snowfall. Also, they're good, but not the magic bullet or cure for poor judgment.
Many moons ago I was all full of piss and vinegar and decided I'd take a shot at heading to work in my Z/28 with fresh Blizzaks during an ice storm with random rain mixed in. The first indication that I shouldn't bother was when it took me 10 minutes (not exaggerating) to navigate the crown of my street to get to my car parked on the other side. The second sign was the amount of time it took to get into the car (parked on a slope). The final straw was when I hopped, pushed in the clutch, rolled forward about 3" and immediately started sliding down the driveway, to the street, down the street sideways/backwards to the bottom of the hill and onto my neighbor's lawn. I left it there and made the trek back up the hill, falling multiple times, while a good number of my neighbors stood at their front doors clapping. Since my car was a bit on the LOUD side, everyone heard me started and immediately assumed that entertainment would ensue. They were quite right.
To the OP, glad to hear you're OK, but I know it absolutely sucks to lose your baby. You must admit though, it's quite a story that you'll remember for years to come. Try to find a roller or car with a bum trans and the majority of your car can continue to serve you for years to come.
The E28 535is that I restored earlier this year also met it's end due to the weather a couple weeks agoe. Bone dry roads but for a trickle of runoff across the road around a blind turn. It was water when my friend left his house, but froze on his way back. So, 40ish MPH, curve, ice, telephone pole. /E28

Yeah, you're correct. But we're talking about an area of the country where as the winter weather usually doesn't get below 32 degrees and rarely if never snows more than a inch. And it's not as if you can go to a tire shop here and say "hey buddy Let me get a set of Blizzes or some spikers asap." They will give you that weird dog look.
But then again Hindsight is always 20/20

Yep it's the classic case of point...steer...gas.................then brake.
Most common car issues I ran into here are distributor problems and brake issues. i.e. Idiots (speeders) Arseholes (slow pokes)
Me I'm the Idiots favorite Arsehole while being the Arseholes favorite idiot.

Respect....:buttrock
Thanks man, appreciate the love.
Your right. It's a good story. But not my only one. Worst story I have I wasn't driving.
I wasn't supposed to walk away from. It involves a 86 GTI, The Infamous US HWY Rt 81 north, 8 hours driving, DIVINE INTERVENTION or EMINENT PREMONITION (I saw it in a dream just before it happened), and 14 automotive carwheels (front to back), and NO SEAT BELT...... just Legs and Arms locked and braced against the dash.
I crawled out without a scratch. However my friend who was driving was knocked out.
I had to shut the car off and pull him out.
It took me a couple years to get behind the wheel after that. Let alone ride with anyone else.
The other story I have all the Northern folks could probably relate if not know about the event involved. The NorthEaster of 1995 on XMAS EVE. I was caught up in a 92 car pile up on Rt 9s in Croton on the Hudson, New York. I had a Saab 9000 turbo/5. I was one of the only people to drive away with my front end smashed agains the windshield.
As for getting back in the saddle again. You know it. Already pricing another Big Six / 5
Lets see some pics of this thing.

:buttrock GOOD NEWS!!!
Picking up another E34 535i saturday. The guy who I'm buying it from said it was his ex wife's car. (go figure) Car needs a paint job, minor body work, valve adjustment, and wheels (has two different style rims on it) but it runs fine. best thing about it...It's a Stick...YES!!!!
Valve adjustment....If the belt doesn't have enough tension to cycle through the firing order via fan bolt, what can I do?

Nah the tow was free through my insurance. However I did have to kick out for the storage fee. But the guy cut me a deal. Reminds me...
Georgians... Or any Junkyard Ramblers....check Pull a Parts & Pick a Parts for a Black and Tan E34 with a Pancaked roof....That's my car... Car was solid. Come to think about it...S#$& I should have pulled the Master cylinder and Slave Cylnder they were brand spanking new...oh well
What is it about Georgia drivers and NOT using their turn signals when changing lanes?!???
I don't know??? But my feelings about that were summed up in the action flick "SHOOT'EM UP"... "it takes less than 3 seconds to use you finger to flip the turn signal...but NOOO. The privilaged bastards feel they can do as they please!" He then takes the 740 and runs the snob in the 140 body Mercedes s500 into a Parked car... Priceless...
