I know it has been discussed a few times but I want some feed back and input from guys with actual experience in tuning pros and cons...
Is this a software for the faint of heart?

The WAR chip is an option for you correct? That might be more for the 'faint hearted' because you will have some support from Miller.
On Turner Pro, I have opened a .bin with an .xdf that was posted somewhere. The .xdf seemed to be complete and allowed me to look/modify whatever I wanted. In the end I thinks it boils down to knowing what to modify when. That's when Turner Pros interface with Ostrich2 would come into handy. I think it boils down to how good/complete the .xdf you are using is, but correct me if I am wrong.

Actually this is for M50 based motors and a few other non BMW motors....not mines..
I am thinking about this tuner pro and I have been looking at the Ostrich feature...

It can be very rewarding if you're looking to put in the time and effort. If you're looking for a quick solution, just buy a chip tune.

I am wanting to now learn the finer points so this is long haul stuff here.

I would say pick up an 803 HFM, Ostrich 2, and download the beta TunerPro with trace feature. Read the 413 threads, then go back and re-read them. Have fun! :)

The War Chip can work great for learning the up front stuff about Chip tuning also it is a powerful hardware piece, gives you the ability to store 4 tunes at once and see the difference on the fly!
BTW, you the E34 Man!

Tunerpro works great on my end. I've used it alot on tuning E36 and DSM. Just make sure you got the right address on the DME that your working on. Use the Ostrich, this way you don't have to turn off your car, and go outside to change the chip everytime you make the changes. Good luck
