The bentley says to pry up the panel surrounding the gear shift lever starting on the front left side with a thin stiff blade.

Is this true? I want to replace the lights under this panel but I don't want to booger it up.

Any and all help appreciated.

Thanks.

Auto? Car off, foot on brake, pull the selector all the way back and loosen the tbolt on the front. Don't remember the size sorry. Then you can maybe grab the sliding cover area and pull up, or use something like the bentley says and get it high enough to get some fingers under there. I've never replaced a bulb, but taken that area apart and if you don't loose small pieces it should be pretty self explanatory.

the panel in question is the wood grain shift surround plate,
it should lift right up (minus any spilt drinks or gooey snacks)
I don't have a lighted gear selector myself, but I have taken
said panel in/out of the car multiple times for SSK installation

Yes you do have to pry it all out. Just be careful. It is tricky to do.

If you have one of those windshield mount for a gps. you can use that to lift the wood panel. Place the GPS mount at the front of the panel. secure the mount and give it a quick jerk to pop up the panel.

I'm assuming that the translucient letters light up but I have no way to tell without looking. I'm doing the lights behind the AC/Heater controls anyway so I figured I'd give a look see.

I do not have a GPS can I use the suction cup on the back of my shaving mirror?

Thanks

You can try. No matter how careful you are you will always mark up the wood panel if you try prying the panel.

I just take the A/M switch out and use my middle finger to pop the consol up.

Is there a cut off year when the shifter had illumination?

My A/M switch doesn't light up either and before I try and pry it up to take a look, I'd like to know if I'm wasting my time trying to get something to light up that doesn't.

If there is a cut off year, can one be retro-fitted?

My 95 530 auto shifter has the light and my 92 525 auto does not have it. The GPS window suction works very and was what I used to remove the shifter panel when I replaced the black shifter cover.

Is this a 95 only thing or do other years have an illuminated gear selector as well?

Just curious.

I know I can pull the cover to find out real quick.
