Ok guys,

I took my gauge cluster apart a few weeks ago to replace the odometer gears. Got that done, got it all buttoned up, and while I was hooking up all of the electrical connections, I realized something.

There wasn't a connector for the SI board.

Yeah, someone had cut it. :mad. Could that be why my dang tach, fuel, and coolant temp gauges never worked? I know Strictly German has a later 635 in their yard, could I just go cut the connector out of that car and solder it to the cut wires in my car? TIA.

what build date is your 6?

sound like you'd be better off getting the wiring harness that connector belongs to and swap in a good one.

It's an 87 L6 with a 5 speed swap. Beyond that I have no idea what the build date is. It's kept at a friend's house and he lives about an hour away. Next time I'm there I'll look.

well...

I do have an '83 633 parts car here that may or may not have a compatible wiring harness in it.. I do remember the cluster has an SI board in it...

I just dont know the compatibility though.. Got a feeling its probably not.. others here would know more than I and might chime in if they see this.

IIRC, I think I need a 12 wire connector for the SI board.

I'll take a looksie here in a bit...

Ah ... the '87 doesn't have a separate SI board. All of the SI functions are on the main board (See below). Has someone swapped in an earlier cluster?

Here is an earlier board, you can see the main board on top and the SI board through the hole, underneath. Where did they cut the cable?:

See the plastic connector with the blue arrow coming out of it? Yeah, that isn't there in my car, and the wires going to it have been cut. Figured a pic would be better to show everyone what I'm talking about.

I think that the connector with the blue arrow is mislabeled in that article you got the photo from. Check and see if that the connector doesn't slide onto the edge of a circuit board that carries the automatic transmission gear selector bulbs. Didn't you say the car had an Auto to Manual swap?

Actually, now that I look at it again, you're right. Ok well that's a bit of a relief. So then how does the SI board get power? Is it just the batteries?

Pin 4 (fuse 21-memory power) & pin 7 (fuse 10-power input) of connector C1 (blue plug-green arrow) goes to the SI board via the internal ribbon cable.

Thanks everyone for the help! Guess I'll have to go back and check the connectors and fuses.

This is good to know. I always wondered how the "R" lit up when I was in reverse on my 5 speed swapped car.

Since we're on the topic, is the SI board connected to the temp gauge? Since I replaced my SI batteries and odometer gears, the temp needle rattles around with a rapid chattering noise from somewhere back there (not sure if the noise comes from the gauge itself). The SI lights still flicker and change, so I don't think it's working any better than before.

Oh one more question, what does the yellow connector go to? Cause my car seems to be missing that one as well.

I believe the yellow connector is empty, it is C5 and if you look on the ETM all of the pins to C5 are labeled "Not used"

Weird. Thanks though man, I just now downloaded the ETM, so hopefully I'll have the gauge cluster working soon.
