I just purchased a 1990 535i the other day. Other than saying holy crap I love this car, I need help in deducing a problem with it. It vibrates from start (subtly) up until about 80km/h. It's most noticeable around 60km/h. The fellow I purchased the car from said that he suspected it was the drive shaft bearing and that it needed to be replaced.

In addition to this as perhaps another clue, the car has IMO horrible gas mileage. It has an 80 litre tank (21 gallons) but only gets 400KM's (248 miles) to a tank. The drive shaft bearing would make sense if this clue coincides since the engine would have to crank harder to provide the wheels with the same amount of torque.

Thoughts?

P.S. The vibration is not like "holy crap the car's about to explode" it's noticeable by my car buddies but the girlfriend had no clue, when I told her about the problem she replied: "oh, I thought that was from it having a beefy engine" ;)

Probably the center support bearing and/or the guibo. It''s best to replace them both together anyway.

The mileage problem and vibration are separate. Either a bent wheel or driveshaft wear cause the vibration. The fuel usage could be a vacuum leak or damaged intake boot. Your car needs some attention. It's an old car.
