I am starting to plan the turbo build on my DD s52 e34 touring. I am not planning on huge boost and I am more interested in reliable steet-able power. I would like something around 350-400whp. This will be installed on a stock OBDI s52. Stock HG and stock bolts. If I have the need for more down the road I will step up to arps and a different HG (if needed). I have been debating buying a ready to go kit or piecing it together and doing all the fab work myself and have decided for the later. I am very capable of fabing IC piping, exhaust, etc. I build a turbo m10 on MegaSquirt a few years ago so know the basics of turbo charging.

I am planning for sub 10psi to start with. I recently bought a used tial 38mm with a 8.7psi spring so I will be starting with working off just the spring pressure.

The build will happen next spring/summer and I will be collecting parts over the winter. I would like to have all the questions answered before I jump into the build so that the car is down for the least amount of time.

Here is what I am planning for hardware so far:

spa manifold
spa 5000 turbo
tial 38mm waste gate
803 maf
36lb or 42lb injectors (which is better for the power I am looking for? I don't want to go too big)
tial bov or a recirculation valve
oil feed/oil return
liquid/air after cooler (due to the lack of space in the nose of an e34, or adding the IC between the rad and rad support as 5mall5nail5 has done. I plan to keep AC though so not sure if that would be a very good idea. I also like the idea of keeping the engine mounted fan, being my DD and all.)

I have a few questions and maybe all of you can help out.

Blow through question:

From my research I have found with a draw through setup a bov can cause a rich condition and a possible stall because of venting all the unmetered air. With that said should I be running a recirculation valve? Does the valve vent back to the intake after the maf pre turbo? Can some tuners tune around this? I have seen TRM kits with BOVs.....how do they get around that? It doesn't matter to me running either a BOV or recirculation. What would you all suggest for a recirculation valve? If I run a recirculation valve does it matter where it is? Should it be close to the TB or can it be on the passenger side so that there is less piping to get the recirculated air back to the intake?

Clutch:

I am currently running an m20 flywheel and clutch on my s52 because it is single mass and a bit lighter. I understand I will need to get something that will hold better than the m20 setup. I am planning on a 6 puck and red pressure plate from clutchnet. Should I step up to something bigger than the m20 flywheel? I believe the m20 flywheel is 228mm compared to 240mm of the m3 clutch. Would 228mm with a 6 puck and red pressure plate be good for the amount of power I am looking for. Would it also give me a little room to grow?

Tune:

I am still up in the air for which tune to go for. Right now I am debating between TRM, TT, or a WarChip. I like the fact that the Warchip is adjustable which would allow growth down the road. I would have miller set me up with a base tune and then get the car to a dyno and tune there or over the phone with Miller. What are pros and cons going either way. Other than cost that is.

Any help that anyone can give would be great. thanks!! Also if anyone has any of the above items for sale let me know.

There are no ready made kits currently for sale for the E34, so you can scratch that off the list.

I would go blow-thru for the MAF since it makes the intake easier. I chose to do a BPV due to mine being a daily driver and I didn't want the noise. My bypass valve is on the driver's side right off the turbo and it blows into the intake tube, each hose is no longer than 1 ft.

As for the tune, TRM is proven, the war chip isn't yet as far as M50 based engines are concerned. Hopefully this will change over time. TT is the best, but you may/may not get Nick to sell you a chip.

I have talked with Nick and he seems willing to sell a tune, the price seems a bit high tho. So I may be looking towards TRM or warchip or a tune from someone stepping up.

I understand there is not a full kit for the e34 but there are kits that make up a lot of the parts other than the IC/aftercooler.

Do you have any more details on your Aftercooler setup?

Did you mean passenger side? What BPV are you using?

Good to see another E34 going the FI route. I'm getting stuff ready for my build on my E34. Go with TRM, they rock! Took the time to answer my never ending questions and then some :)

I went with blow-thru and a GT35R.

Hey Jake, I hope that wastegate works well for you! It served my little m20 well.

I am in the same boat as you as for picking a tuner... Pm'd
