So my E36 racecar has been developed about as much as I care to do, except for some fiberglass doors, cams, standalone engine mgmt, shocks, etc. etc. It's a great racecar, but......
the wheels are turnin'. :cool A 6 series racecar seems like a really fun project, and different. The aftermarket for an E24-based 6 series racecar project that is competitive in current competition (BMWCCA, NASA, SCCA) looks pretty slim. I'm referring to adequate suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, chassis reinforcement, fiberglass body parts, wings, etc etc.
Anybody know of any current racecars in amateur (or even pro) competition and where they obtain parts?
I'd love to see photos. :D

The other (black) 6er owned by Ivan in one of the above linked photos unhappily got done in by a track fire at the Mont Tremblant circuit and is the car that Todd, Dave, Val and myself pulled apart last Spring before despatching the carcass to the scrapyard.
Here's a pic I took of Dave's car at that time.

and the dismembering:

and the carcass :(

This car was featured in Rondel or some other BMW specality magazine, wasn't it?

Generally, I like the idea of a street-going track car, and have often wondered about procuring/making fiberglass parts for E24's.

Anything can be made!
You could turn the 6 into something special with enough time and effort and $$$, we all know that.
I think suspension wouldnt be that big of a hurdle. coil-over systems are available, and you can have your own springs made once you have spring dimensions decided.
Brakes? You can install 850 calipers on the front, and E32s on the rear. Or i think with adapter plates you could go for a more custom, lighter set-up.
A pipe-bender, tubing, hole saw, MIG welder, some plate and sheet steel, and time would be all youd need to make a stiffer car. My dads friend just rented a bender and built a custom cage for their 2002 driving school car.
Its really just time and money. You could make a pretty serious car, but in the end it would still be an E24, which isnt a popular racing platform at all. I think I would LOVE to make an E24 racer if i had the space and time later in life. Id do all of the above, and then some! Building a cage would be the tricky part though...

cool link, thanks. good info there.

I'd love it!!! I've started a little fiberglassing myself....real basic. No molds or anything. Just patching stuff. It would be a fun (but time consuming!!) project

None of it is intimidating to me, since I built almost all my E36 myself. My concern lies more in the lack of aftermarket support and lack of development to make the car competitive, since the E24 is not a popular platform (as you pointed out). In other words, I know what will make my E36 better and faster because LOTS of other racers have already done the trial-and-error work before me, and there's lots of internet info available to help me. The aftermarket support is huge, compared to the limited aftermarket for the 6 (at least almost all the advertisers focus on track oriented parts for the 3 series).
but it would sure be a fun project......:redspot

Also.
I have an '87 L6 parts car I stripped the interior from. As I get around to parting the rest of it out- it may have a decent shell to start from.

Well...I have been slowly developing my plans for hopping up one of my E24's in the performance division, and lightweight body panels only aid in that venture.
Hopefully, I'll be able to chip away at my ideas and see what I come up with.

No idea, but apparently they don't like my hotlinking.
Apparently the owner was hard to contact to begin with, judging by some of those comments.

Here are the brake swap/up-grades for plenty of stopping power, or if you're getting real serious, talk to Alpniacsi. He manufactures racing brakes and has an Alpnia Six that he has rebuilt, so I imagine he would know.

Ground Control (http://www.ground-control-store.com/products/search.php) makes coil-overs and front camber/caster plates for the Six

The camber/caster plate, note the side to side caster adjustment (coil-overs only):

Metric Mechanic (http://www.metricmechanic.com/) or better yet, Frank Fahey (http://www.frankfaheymotorsports.com/) for the engines.
Metric Mechanic (http://www.metricmechanic.com/) for the Transmissions and rear Axles. They are best known for this, as they started business modifying the synchros in the factory transmissions for racing.
Here is a source for custom radiators: http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10926&
Power Flex for the bushings, or better yet, there are several threads on BigCoupe about putting Spherical Bearings in the front thrust arms and the rear trailing arms.
Ireland Engineering (http://www.iemotorsport.com/) for headers, sway bars and front and rear camber kits: This is the racing kit for use with coil-overs, they have a street kit also:

I think Mike Yaskin at Bavarian Specialties in King of Prussia, PA is an excellent resource too. He used to run a bad-ass E28 M5 (same chassis as >'83 E24) in BMW CCA racing. I also had an ex-Donohue IMSA Bridgestone Supercar E34 M5. Of course since Ed Arnold prepared those cars, he's also well versed in older BMW chassis (Google his Targa Newfoundland car).

Yea, but from what I remember, Yaskin had a m635 too. Which was also bad-ass. Also was sold recently for 7000, maybe. Nice looking car, with a littttttle bit of suspension work, nothing compared in the scheme of things for the 88 m5. I guess the chassis is better in terms of 80's machine. I would still rather have a good r' looking racecar than a 4 door... unless it's a japanese car.
