will wheels for a 335 fit on a 540?

Hi both of the rims are 5x120. The 540 offset is 18 and the 335 is 35. The 540 backspacing is 5.24" and the 335 is 5.84". Not sure what the offset and backspacing means so will these fit on a 1998 540 sport? Thanks in advance?

They will not fit as is and without buying addt'l parts...
The wheel hub bore on the 335i wheels are 72.6mm and the E39 540 hub is 74.1mm, so the hub bore on the wheel would need to be machined out to fit. Also you would need to purchase hubcentric spacers (15mm or 20mm) and appropriate longer wheel bolts to lower the effective offset to an acceptable range for the E39 540. After doing these things and spending more $ they would fit, IMO not worth the hassle and extra expense.
