View Full Version : sidewall(tire) damage

Today my front passenger tire hit the curb and one little piece rub off. From the picture, should I replace the tire or can I fix them with rubber cement or the like to fill it. I am worry the side wall got deteriorated which might cause a blow out especially on freeway. Please help :help

It's a flesh wound.. depending on how deep that little flap opens up, I'd say you're fine. The rubber in that area is purely for protection of the tire carcass. If you can't peel back that little flap and see cords, you'll likely be fine. The rubber isn't holding the tire together, it's just there to cover the tire carcass.
If you can see any cords in that hole, replace the tire for sure. Because the cords will rust and then fail, with ugly results.

i've worked tires for 4 years. from my experience that should be fine no worries.

I had a similar cut from hitting a curb a few weeks ago. You could see cords when you peeled back the rubber. Since I had JUST replaced all four tires (with Continental DWS's) for the wet/snowy season, I went ahead and ordered a new tire. The tire installer concurred this was a good decision. It's worth $250 to me not to constantly wonder when the tire would fail at 90+ on the freeway.
