Hey guys,
I just have too many cars, and as much as I love my 6'er I have an s52 swapped e30 convertible for the warm months, and since I installed coilovers and bilsteins this car is too low and stiff to drive in the winter months, and besides that I don't want the rust to get any worse.

The story with the car was I was working at a shop and the original owner's sun had it towed in. Car had 142k miles, a partially blown HG (wasn't overheating or pressurizing, just leaking coolant into the exhaust) and a shot auto tranny.

Over a few months I had the head rebuilt and reinstalled, and sourced an 85 manual parts car and installed the G265 with all new clutch and shifter parts.

Okay I'm not gonna continue this in novel form I'm just gonna write what it's got.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p256/mrmoskowitz/P1040175.jpg

158k miles
all this work in last 16k miles:
Rebuilt head, new water pump and thermostat
G265 tranny swap
Bilsteins and sleeve coilovers (350 lb front, 250 rear)
modified stock strut hats for more camber
hacked up and shoehorned e30 euro smileys into stock buckets, with 4300k 35w slim HIDS

Other good stuff:
3.46 LSD. Sport valence with working fogs.
Car has blue sport interior, everything in interior working. Kind of chintzy JVC deck after my alpine got stolen. crack free dash, drives solid wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere. Literally does not drip a drop of any fluid, been sitting for 2 months and ground is bone dry under it.

Bad - rust on edges of front fenders, should probably be replaced, but could possible cut about an inch of metal and weld in. See pics.
surface rust in corner near rear licence plate, not even close to perforating just surface.
Really no dents to speak of, cleans up nice except for front fenders.
A/C compressor kicks on but there's no freon at all, still R12, haven't tried charging it.

Do you guys think I could get 3500 for it as it sits with TRX wheels just to drive it home. I have tons of wheels that fit it that could be negotiated as well. I'll get better pics in the daylight ASAP, these are just what I had on my computer. I have a line on a set of rust free fenders, if I got those installed and painted do you think my baby would be worth 5k?

i think with the body issues (rust) you're top end is going to be right around where you are thinking, regardless of wheels. I'd keep the junk wheels / tires on it and sell it like that.

Apart from the rust she looks great/ Love the stance on those deep dish wheels.

The rule of thumb is that with TRX wheels on u subtract a grand, and the rust does not help. Why not put some regular wheels on there so the next person does not have to spend more money right away and maybe u could get 2500 to 3000.

Good luck with the sale! Lots of Alpine 6ers for sale lately, it seems. For what it's worth, I got very little action on mine with regular 15" Style 5s and no rust at all for $3500. Couple nibbles. Like others have said, it's a tough market for non-M 6ers at the moment. Your non-cracked dash is definitely a plus, though.

I have approximately 10 sets of wheels an interested buyer could choose from so rather than quote them with an arbitary one of those sets of wheels I figure i'll price it with the worthless TRX's and talk about wheels separately. Up in the northeast rust free 6'ers don't exist, I just posted it on craigslist, I guess I've convinced myself to actively try to sell it...gonna miss it if it goes though :(

I love your house. It must have a massive yard too, because I see a Farmall Cub in one of those pictures. :D

Hey Kosta, I just emailed you through the forum, car is still here

it does have a bit of good going for it for those who want a quick and fun sixer. 3.46LSD is a good diff, coilovers, no leaks, G265 transmission.

My guess is the car was an auto originally? The 85 5spds came with the G265 majority of the time.

my guess is it would sell at ~3k as-is with TRX wheels on it.

I wouldnt put forth the effort to fix the rust.. leave that to the RIGHT buyer.. the right buyer is gonna be someone that knows how to do the rust/paint repair themselves..
If you go into it and have it fixed.. you'll end up upside down on it and not get your money back out of it...

I think the car is worthy of fixing the rust.. it sure has a slew of popular options/parts on it.

Where's a good place to list it? Not even a nibble from here, and nothing but scams from CL. Autotrader?

here, CL, autotrader...

first two are FREE.. I'd do CL anyway.. more exposure and people do search out of their area on CL

you'll be able to spot the scams pretty easy.. just ignore them.. comes with the territory

It's a tough market for 6ers at the moment. I think if you really want to sell it you're going to have to network a little bit. That is, go on the offensive and hit up people looking for an '80s Bimmer, maybe not even a 6-series, or people just looking for an interesting car.

I was actually trying to decide between a Volvo 780 and an E30 when I came across my car. If someone had contacted me when I was still looking I'd have seriously considered their car. You never know where people are in their decision-making process. If nothing else, it can't hurt!

Good luck!

Wait till the Spring. The local group, i.e. New England on link below has gatherings regularly both here in RI and in the Boston area. Bring it to that, its a fairly younger crowd of of mostly 3 series enthusiests that would likely be enamored with an e24. Outside of this group, I think you'll have a tough time moving it.

curious about the coil setup, can you give me more info on that please?

goddamnit wrote out such a long post then firefox crashed and it got lost.

Anyways, they're ebay type universal coil sleeves but I have collected a few sets of these over the years so I had lots of different options when it came to sleeve length, diameter, spring rate, hats. I don't know where to get my exact combo of parts without getting lucky and having a whole grab bag of parts to choose from. Rears are easy, fronts still have stock perches, would have preferred to cut off perch and weld on smaller, if I keep car I'll try to find a set of spare front strut housings and do that. Anyways, pics:

how does it attach? is it welded to the shock or something? hows the car ride?

Mossman11
12-20-2009, 04:31 PM
The sleeves are a very snug fit and when the weight of the car is on them the springs it's all locked in. Not welded to answer your question...

Car rides great but stiff, 350/250 front/rear rates. I have another set of springs 275/225 that I may swap in come spring time for a softer ride
