One mechanical horsepower of 550 foot-pounds per second is equivalent to 745.7 watts. Why are they not saying 745.7 watt? Maybe because it's plural. In the same context 1000 horsepowers is plural. It's not necessarily incorrect, just uncommonly used because of the marvelous 'Merican english.
