View Full Version : Challenge and claim! Window Tinters are killing the E38's grace and form..

Here's the deal
I've been looking at various forms of window tint for my 01 740il sport and searched here to look at e38's with various degrees (percentages) and colors of tint.
I have come to the conclusion that the e38 looks best with
No tint.
Veryyyyy light tint and perhaps a light shade of brown tint for the e38's with the beautiful tan interior.
However I challenge anyone here to post me a pic of a decent looking e38 7 -series with dark tint that the general population here will say, looks better than this one with light tint.

Ive issued the challege now bring it on. Top this car in curb appeal, I bet you cannot. The curved glass on luxury BMWs is a huge part of the imagery that makes your jaw drop as a well kept model rolls by.
Take a look and then show me a dark tint car that even comes close.
Dark tint simply detracts from the grace of e38's and limits the sunlights dance across the expanses of our cars beautiful form and design.:hacker

I just picked mine up from the tinters yesterday. Cost was $180 for the tint job and $80 for the removal of the old tint. They had to spend 4 hours steaming off the old crappy purple tint. We went with 35 in the rears and 20 in the front. I'll post some pict up later today when the sun comes up.

I don't liked tinted cars as much either. Tinting in my opinion has its place on 90s Cadillac Devils and Mercedes S cars like the 500 and 600.
I can see having it in the south where you get lots of sun. But here in Erie we average lest than 24 hours of sun in the whole month of February. Erie gets less sun then Seattle, Washington.

I agree with your argument...the other piece, however, is privacy..i don't like the fact that without tint anyone can walk by and look in my car...if i can see your ipod/sunglasses/etc in the car, i'm more apt to break in and steal them!

First, why do we have to WORK so hard to see the images that you want us to see.
Instead of inserting a link that we have to click to open the image in another window etc...why not just insert the image into your post? :thumbdown
All you have to do to insert an image into your post is click on either of the little YELLOW icons along the top of the message box that look like a "stamped" post card with a mountain peek on it...then paste or type the image's URL address in the box that opens...this will automatically insert the images URL into your post and it will embed the image. (okay, I'm stepping off my soap box) :)
Here's the image you wanted us to compare "dark tint" with:
http://terravali.com/testimonials/bmw740ilsportT.jpg
Second, tinted windows can serve multiple purposes. Some areas of the country (sunny/desert/tropical) it's more of a neccessity...the further north you go it becomes more of an aesthetic or theft deterrent.
Third, the amount of tint (or any at all) in regards to "the look" also depends on the exterior color of the car...and once again, this is totally subjective to personal likes/dislikes. Personally, I think darker colored e38s like the blacks/blues/dark greens/reds/dark greys/browns can "wear" tinted windows (either light or dark tint) better than the lighter hued e38s like the silvers/tans. White e38s can get away with dark tint (in my opinion) due to that intriguing "contrast" element that opposite hues give off (black/white).
Fourth, I think shadowline exterior trim also is a determining factor as to how tinted windows (either light or dark tint) affect the overall "look" of the vehicle.
Having an Arctic Silver e38 with chromeline exterior trim and it also has the sunshade option...plus living far enough north that the heat/sun isn't too bad affected my decision NOT to tint the windows. But I went in the other direction on my Orient Blue e39 which also has shadowline exterior trim. I went with 35% tint all around (except for the windshield) :cool
Hmmm, not sure if I really contributed anything to this thread...but, thems my opinions. :dunno: :D

Maybe its because im young but the first thing I notice is the tint on a car. Personally I have Limo tint all around in my Mercedes S500 and IT looks great!!! I took a different approach on the Bimmer so the tinting is quite a bit lighter. In my opinion big mistake! Limo tint gives it a gangster look lol Or a mysterious look. Not to mention the security purposes like what wilk pointed out.

Nice car but tint takes away from her lines for example the first thing I noticed (may be incorrect) but it seems that your rear window is tinted with darker tint than sides correct?
Thats the first thing I noticed at first viewing. Right off the bat.
That = distracting.

Beautiful car but tint is a little too dark for my tastes. I think where most confuse things is darkness vs protection. A polarized tint, or any quality tint for that matter, is more protective than just dark. What you want to do is block the UV, that's the killer. Mine is actually only a 39% polarized tint

I hear ya' Big Fella but when I referred to protection I also meant from prying eyes when your car is left in public places. I do everything possible to deter would be thieves from breaking into the car. Making it less tempting(removing all electronics out of view, nothing of value in view, etc.) and with the dark tint hopefully it'll be more discouraging.
Definitely like the look of your tint against your factory color. If I lived up North and was staying in the area I may have not been so aggressive with the darkness lol

I feel you, there are nosey arse folks out there. Sad fact is though, it's been my experience, not personal, that in certain situations not being able to see inside has been worse. Actually though, sometimes it doesn't matter because there are morons who've done stupid crap. For example, one of my coworkers has a jeep and she leaves it unlocked, never leaves ANYTHING in it, yet another coworker was walking up on jackasses peeking in and around it. Cops drove by and they took off before he got there. Funny thing is, in that same area another coworker was rushing and left his window DOWN . We get off work and I drop him off at his car and his navigation was still in the window, cell still ON the armrest, radio still in the dash lol

You hit the nail on the head. No tint is classier while as others have said tint is gangsta.
As for safety any thing you don't want to be seen can be stowed in the trunk just fine. Where I live nobody ever steals things out of cars. It is common for people to leave there doors open and engines running while they go into a store real quick as well.

I find it really depends on the not only the exterior colour, but the interior as well.
I have been debating whether to tint my car or not.
I have an Oxford Green exterior (as well as dash) with a pearl-beige (creamy tan) interior. Now, the glass already has a slight green hue to it, so the car actually looks pretty good already. I figure a tint job will end up being detrimental for this colour combination.
That being said, I love the look of either a shadowlined Alpine Weiss or Schwarz (either chromeline or not) with a really dark tint.

For me it depends on a lot of factors...Tint darkness....Color....Suspension...Wheels....other Mod's..ect...
It's gotta have the right combination of all that.
Jayccel's and the Black E38 with the 19" Beyern Multi's are both (in my opinion) a perfect example of that right combination.
Oh Imola740...love those 20" M-Par's

I am not a fan of tint. I like the sun shade that the E38's come with.
+1, I bought mine with a tinted rear window but with the sunshades up it's unnecessary. I like un-tinted with the sunshades in the summer or when you don't want anyone looking in the car.

Maybe that was their way of trying to say you were cool, who knows. I don't know "where" you were in WA, but there are plenty of non-Subaru drivers around the Seattle/Tacoma/Bellevue area; plenty Bimmers ;)
I was in a town called Everett! At stoplights you would see a 7 suburu pile up lol! To many foresters!!! It reminds me of when we used to live in New York hell even we bought a Subaru lol! Great car still have it to this day no tint :(

i would say its just personal preference.....i've always had tint since i stated driving and feel like im naked without it....that was the first thing i did when i got the seven...i also agree that it kills some cars, i dont think it does much damage to the e38, esp blk on blk....and if you dont have the shadowline it actually helps it imo..5% all around, even the fatty in the front =)

There is NO standard. Are you implying that you want what the majority of people want? Do you go on Amazon and buy products from the 'most popular' category?

I Live in the Las Vegas Desert.....When It Comes to Tint.....Tint Is Done More For FUNCTIONALITY Rather Than aesthetics...
In Nevada it is ILLEGAL to tint Your front windshield ANY percentage....But I dont care..
I have Suntek Brand ......My Winshield is FULLY Tinted 35%
ALL Other Windows ( Sides, Quarters, Moon Roof, & Rear ) are 15% and let me tell ya.....with a FULLY tinted from Front windshield....I NEVER have to wear sunglasses! I think that little black bar or strip across the front windshield is kinda tacky lookin..

Thanks, man! The exhaust tips are meant for use on the 1970-74 Dodge Challenger. I looked for months for tips that I thought would complete the look of my car, and I think the ones I settled on fit perfectly.
My car is a Sport, so the only chrome bits that come on the car from the factory are the kidney grilles and the 740i badge, both of which I replaced with black pieces.

Ahh, I see. Well those fit the E38 perfectly, just like I'm sure it would fit the look of the Challenger. Come to think of it, our E38s are like luxury challengers, no?

I agree with the classiness statements in this thread. A decent E38 will always look worse with tinted glass, especially if there's difference between front and rear. I feel the same with angel eyes but that's another debate for another thread.
Tinting rears only or high percentage in rears and low in front kind of gives it the van look. Plus, on my home turf you're just asking to be pulled over by the coppers if you tint your front sides, as it's illegal.
If I lived in a very sunny place however, I would probably tint the glass with same percentage all the way around.
Doppelverglazung is the best option you can get in E38 imo. No tinting needed.

NY State is illegal to have dark tints but hey that a chance I take but I have never got pull over fir the tint. it depends on the kind of tint you get. Same witht the euro front plate , I have one and NYC you must have a front plate

The only reason I bought a e38, is because I saw mine with no tints and fell in love.
First choices were a pepsi blue e46 sedan, and a blk audi a8. When i saw the seven with no tint I had to have it.
I use to see e38s but they always had tint. I didn't even think to buy one and just take the tint off, smh.
I feel having no tint makes the car more classy. If im driving with a suit on, I dont look out of place to passerby.
And when you look at a bmw interior, there is nothing to steal. Unless you have a aftermarket dvd. As well the factory glass has a beautiful shine when you wash the car.
Although like said, when it comes to tints, its all depends on what mods you have

......My Winshield is FULLY Tinted 35%
I had a buddy that owned a tint shop here in Denver and he tinted the sides and rear at 15% (which I still have) and the front at 20%. The car looked really cool and I liked the front tint at first but I had a hell of a time seeing at night. During the day in bright sunlight at a mile high it was great (no sunglasses) then I get out of the car and WHAM! I thought I just came out of a Vegas Casino! I had no idea what time it was! I finally had enough and removed the front.
BTW - the best way to remove tint IMO is to use Windex. Use a blade to get some of the tint off then spray. Let it soak for a minute or two then use the razor again. Repeat till removed and cleaned.

Most of the E38's on this forum (or any forum for that matter) that are in America and Canada that have "Tables" -
have tables out of a Jaguar ---
OEM BMW Seatback Tables are very rare in E38's that are being modified and driven in North America or even owned
by members of this forum ---
There are members of this forum who have made over 10,000 posts who are still looking for a set of OEM BMW Seatback Tables ---
And members whose E38's are the definition of "Custom" are looking for the OEM tables ---
OEM Tables are more common in Europe than here ---
The great thing about this forum is that the members thoughts - dreams - and expressions of their E38's are shown here
in a positive venue which allows everyone to learn and benefit from every post ---
"Knowledge Is Good" ---

This may be an old thread but how do the tinters deal with the rear window defrost wires? I have an e23 an e36 and an early 911. When you can feel the defrost wiring bonded to back of the glass how can tint be bonded without air bubbles over the wire or double later seams ? I have heard mixed processes. Cover over in pone piece or make small parallel strips.

Yes i know, old thread, but i must say that mine looks way better with tinted windows than without, i also agrees that "the lines are compromised by the distraction of being able to see all the different shapes in the interior."

First of all, window tints look good when windscreen has also tint on it.
Black tint all around except for windscreen makes me feel like something is missing, it ruins the integrity.
I keep looking at A pillar, can't resist :)
So, considering all windows are tinted:
1) e38 in dark color (dark blue, black etc) + ~20% black tint + chromline = acceptable
2) dark color + reflective tint (or mirror, I don't know the exact term used for this) + shadowline = good
3) grey, white color + black tint + shadowline = cool
4) dark color + shadowline + black tint = car looks like it was dipped into black paint, no contrast: not good at all
5) grey, white etc + chromline .... already not appropriate in terms of contrast

Danny DeVito had me believing otherwise.
I need to tint both of my cars. My e46 has the black leather and it will scorch you. The e38 is black so it gets unbearably hot anyway. Tint will only help that. Regardless of how good it looks.

I've tinted every car I've ever owned. Saves the interior - number one. I also think it make the car look better - plus it keeps people gawking at my hot wife in her car. :).

I'm removing the tint on Kirsten because a half tinted car looks retarded, because I can't see behind me at night and because the rear seat passengers are complaining they can't see anything at night.

Ima go against the grain...
Every car i have ever owned in my 20 year driving history has gotten either limo or smoke tint...But this time, i wont...
My E38 has the Oyster interior, so it looks really nice from the outside (my opinion).
I Felt really weird at first, as if everyone was staring at me or into the car lol. I got used to the car not being tinted quickly.
For the heat, im going to install Crystalline tint by 3M this summer.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I'm replacing my front drivers window because of a rock scratch. In order to do that I will have to remove the tint on all side windows. The rear is a perfect smoke tint.
My question is, what tint is this? Factory? I love the look of the tint and would like to get them redone with similar tint.

In regards to whether the tint in the pic you show is factory or not...that was answered already back on 1/7/2017 over on BimFest's e38 forum (see quote below if you forgot about that thread).
If you love the look of the tint and would like to get it redone...again, I recommend to check with a local professional window tinter in your area...they could tell you in seconds if they have a matching tint in stock.
The oe side windows are see-thru...so no...that is not factory tint on your windows.
Any professional window tinting vendor in your area should be able to tell you within seconds/minutes if they can match what you have installed. And should be able to verify it by showing you an example or sample of the tint film they have in stock.
The pic below shows unmolested oe windows...(aka...basically there isn't any added tint...they remain as they came off the assembly line) on my 97 e38 740iL. :)

Not only at Bimmerfest but also on a Facebook e38 group. LOL.
What baffles me is that it doesn't look like a film on the inside but rather a sprayed on tint. I have been to a few tint shops around here and they both said the same thing that the tint almost looks applied from factory and that they really couldn't match it. So I thought I'd ask here as well since there seems to be a lot more users on this forum.
Thanks for the input though. You and Unanimous are the only people to respond on any of the threads.

Couldn't find and revive the "tint" thread I recall reading a while back so I thought I'd share my 3M Color Stable 50% tint (with black interior). Front window and sunroof are still factory. IMHO, 35% and any darker on anthracite looks like crap and my goal was to have tint that you can easily see through during the day but provide some privacy at night... mainly to be able to see occupants at night but not make out faces. Due to my crappy phone, and how I'm parked, there's a lot of reflection visible but in person it is very well balanced and framed to the shadow trim without blending into it.
