View Full Version : Passenger door wind sounds coming thru

I was driving this morning and noticed some wind sounds passing thru the window tops and seal. The door seals are still nice and supple and intact, is there a way to adjust the seals or do I need to get new one already. Would be a shame to take out the existing ones. Scared to move them around too much (then they might break). Any suggestions?

you could try adjusting the window itself. Youd have to remove the door panel and all that business though.

It is a tedious job to adjust the window, but it could cure your problem. It might be a little of kilter and not sealing properly after a few years of use.

Does your door stick out slightly? Perhaps your door latch needs adjustment. Do you have the little clear plastic piece that slips over the pawl?. That will make a difference in how tightly the door will close. When the door is brought in closer to the car's surface, it should bring the window closer to the seal.

Have you checked to see if the top of the window actually pops into the weatherstripping groove when you close the door? My passenger side window, for whatever reason, is resistant to doing that. I have to push the door shut with the top of the window to ensure it seals. Greasy fingerprints, yes, but at least I know it's sealing.

My long-term haven't-gotten-around-to-it-yet fix is to adjust the angle of the window. Here's the BCG tech library writeup, with pictures:

+1 on your window not popping in to place, especially if you just noticed it, and it was pretty loud. both windows on my 635 like to do that. i just bump the windows down then up once I get going, if i hear any excessive wind noise. i see it as a trade off for a nice tight seal.

if its been around for awhile and is more moderate, adjustments, as described above, are likely neceassry.

I just started having a lot of whistling along the back edge of both windows recently. Wet the seal and closed the door and it was easy to see where it was sealing and where it wasn't touching. Top and leading edge were fine, but the rear edge was mostly not. Since top and front were hitting pretty good, didn't seem like adjusting the glass was the issue. It was pretty apparent where the seal had shrunken and/or taken a set.

I noticed that the seal where it contacts the glass is really just a lip. If I could just get that lip to stand up a little more again I'd be good.

I had some stiff clear PTFE tape. I think it's about 10 mil, but maybe more (from Mcmaster-Carr). It's thin enough that you can crease it, but thick enough that it will form a nice stiff springy vee. I pressed that in behind the lip on the seal with a long flat plastic spatula to get it seated in there well, and it's worked perfectly. It's invisible, but the seal lip is now sprung out a little more so it seals snuggly and uniformly to the glass.

Door is nice and straight and closes just fine. Got to be the seal. The top and back looks sealed (pinched on the glass), the wind sounds are actually coming from the front top corner of the passenger window. Thanks I'll take another much closer look.

Check the lower front corners where the wingmirror is as they tend to go here first. Good second hand seals from the UK are around GBP 50 per pair! That's around $75 USD.

I have a similer problem on my drivers side "adjust the glass" I just have not done it, lazy I guess. I just roll the window down an inch and back up seals tight.

A buddy of mine has a CL 500 that does that automatically. when u open the doors it rolls down a bit, then rolls back up when closed. way cool.

I thought I would reopen this thread to share some improvements I have had with door alignment and window adjustment. I had gone through adjustment of the doors and so they just did not close like they should.

The door striker bump stop did wonders for pull the door in closer and latching more securely (1.35 ea). I did not even know about them until I read about them above.

1Z Gummi Fledge on all the door seals. Much less wind noise and door close with less force. Rubber has softened significantly ($7 and lots left).

Both my doors align great and no wind noise at 85 this morning.

I am not following you on the

What is this? Is it anything like the "little clear plastic piece that slips over the pawl?."

Not sure what that is either. Just know mine leaks air at the rear edge of the window and I too am seeking a solution

The bump stop fits over the protruding end of the mechanism on the door. Sorry I do not have a picture but it is obvious when you look at it. The part I ordered is:

They take about 2 seconds to install.
