Hi, I'm considering this, facts:
-1997 540i
-"high" spec digital panel in the instrument cluster
-"business" single in dash cd player
-prepared for cd changer from the factory

Questions:
- can I fit the newer widescreen systems to my old car?
- can I have an in-dash cd player with it?
- I need a navi unit in the trunk, and the head unit, what else?
- what's the difference between the mk3 and mk 4 navi "players"
- am I stuck with a cassette player?

thanks for any answers or links to write-ups.

I found some stuff by searching, but mostly concerning the "low" grade instrument cluster issue.

you can retrofit navi w/ proper computer and associated components. it will cost upwards of $2k i would imagine.

a garmin unit is $100.

You can find great deals the Friday after Thanksgiving-- "Black Friday", as it were. Look for a decent deal on car electronics at Best Buy's, Target's and whatnot. Otherwise that Gamin is your best bet Navi-wise.

You can fit an OEM navigation system to your car but that amount of money for parts and theeen the work may be too much. Look into Janus Design double Din kit. Then shop around for a double din navi unit of your preference. Like newbie said try your luck on black friday.
