My 96 e38 was overheating, so I took the car to a shop they said it was the thermostat and it was replaced. After driving the car for about 30 minutes the service engine soon light comes on. What could this issue be, and what should I do? Is it just in need of resetting or could it be something more serious?

Was the car still going hot after the service?
If not it may need a reset .
It also might help to go to auto zone and get the codes read since it is an OBDII

Just give it a day, it may need a nap or a reset.
watch the coolant level and temp gauge.

Hi Edwin,

What do you think about this problem? I had the thermostat replaced and the car stopped running hot. After driving it for 30 minutes the service engine soon light comes on.

Thanks Joe I hope your right. It is driving great now with no overheating the light just popped on.

SES light can be many things, if the light was off after the fix and it came back on you need to get the codes that the car is throwing to determine what is wrong
