Last year someone posted a topic on a 6'er race car project as per the pictures below. Was wondering how it was coming on or went given the time since the first topic was posted. Cannot find the old topic so thought I would put it back out there.

I accessed their site from one of our topics here but cannot find my link 18 months on. The other 6'er racer had pics that were named 633.... so must have been a 633 racer. Rare! Keep looking guys!!

I'm wondering why 6sers are made to be racers.. I would think a 5ser is going to handle better and be lighter.. and an E30 even moreso..

about the only thing I see the 6 wanted for as a racer is the looks..

am I missing something here?

There were many successful 6er race cars in the early and mid '80s that were campaigned by big name teams! I bet if you take an E28 and an E24 of the same vintage down to the shell there is a negligable weight difference, and since the track and wheelbase are the same I can't imagine there would be any noticeable different in tossability given that the roofline of an E24 is lower and, despite having slightly longer overhangs, it's just sheetmetal for the most part.

Nothing a bit of fiberglass and lexan cant solve. Also getting rid of the damn sunroof and replace it with sheetmetal.

but is there any advantage of a 6 over a 5?

and if a 3 is even better.. why use a 5 or 6?.. unless there is some sort of weight category rule I'm not aware of

I don't know what sorts of advantages a 5 or a 6 might have, but I'm guessing that in the '80s when 6ers were campaigned (especially in Australia) maybe it was because they were coupes racing against other coupes like the Jaguar XJS, Volvo 242 turbo, etc. The 3 probably fit the bill too but since the production engines were only 2.7 liters at the largest they probably would not have been competative. I'm sure one of our Aussie friends can clear this up!

There was no advantage from 6 over 5. The 6 series was the top of the line and hence they wanted to push that. Two doors meant a more rigid body. Yes the 3 series was a better racer once perfected but remember that the E24 is a direct decendant of the E9 CSL racer and as such it was a natural progression for the racing line to go from E9 to E24. Had the E3 been the racer then the E28 would have carried the crown in the early 80's.

Back to the Topic, can we find the old topic re the 6'er racer project??
