Hello!
A few months ago I got a check engine light so my friend read the codes for me and said I needed to replace the secondary air pump. I held back on fixing it until recently when i got a registration renewal notice and I had to smog it.

Last friday I finally replaced the air valve and secondary air pump. The big hose was recently replaced because of bad cracks and was still in great shape so didn't change that. Also didn't change that little hose that connects the air valve to something?? Not sure if maybe this little hose is causing the problems? AFter that, I reset the codes. Next day, I went on a road trip for about 300 miles and no c.e.l came back. I was hoping the road trip would complete the drive cycles so i would be ready to smog.

So finally monday came and I took the car to get smogged and I passed but barely.. lol. I was so happy and glad it was all over with! The following morning i start the car and i get a cel with codes:
P1421 Secondary Air System Bank 1
P1432 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected

Before i replaced all the parts I believe i had p1421 and something else. p1432 is definitely a new code its throwing this time.
So i was wondering if anyone had any advice or tips on getting rid of these codes?? I found out what they mean but I am not sure how to go about it.

Some information about my car:
98 528i with 160k miles

thanks

You need to make sure there's power going to the pump, it's tricky to do since the pump only runs a few minutes when cold.

If you don't get any power at the plug then perhaps the relay in the engine DME area or the fuse under the front passenger carpet is bad.

thanks for the reply! I went out to the gym at 6am this morning and it was pretty cold. Im pretty sure i heard the air pump on. I read someones post that its a loud sound kind of like a vacuum cleaner and I am positive i heard a sound like this coming from where the air pump should be so it should be receiving power. Also the sound went away after a few mins so I assume it turned off.

Yeah, that sounds like the pump works, the other thing to check is the hose connections. When I connected mine, I had to use some force, and turning the hose a bit to have it clicked in.

Also, check the vacuum hose on the vave.
