what is a good price to pay for a drop in panel k & n filter for a 97 328is? autozone says $49.95 and they would have to order it. also ,to any that has this, how much of a difference in perf/gas mileage does it make???

Amsoil filters are better, all the research has been done and the conclusions are K&N flows great, so great that dirt flows thru as well. Plus they are cheaper in many applications.
