View Full Version : I am finally convinced

After 3 years of R&D with my M3 I am finally convinced E36's are the drift car to have. I mean this in the least cocky way possible. I am just excited!! My car is absolutely a dream to drift. I am extremely happy with the way the car is set up and working right now, power (420 wheel), Suspension, steering, ect. It is literally a monster at the track. I keep watching the lonestarbash video on vimeo over and over again because I cannot believe how stable the car is. How smooth it puts the power down, how fast it transitions.
Now I just need to clean it up and fix stuff that could potentially end a race weekend early. Things like bushings, little bits of wiring that I do not like, and basically do an overview of the car and check every inch.
Take a look at this video, tell me your thoughts on my car at these points. Constructive Criticism IS A MUST!
3:19 - The car comes into frame at a ton of angle, but is SO stable, even on the bumpy track. Then as the turbo spools into power, the car gets up and goes! and makes smoke! Goes exactly where I point it! Then the transition to the second turn comes and again, it is super gnarly smooth... AHHH!!
5:25 - Into the second turn, and around the loopdee doo. To me the car looks to slow down on point and with the long wheel base of the e36 you can really throw the car into the circle hard. Then when in the turn, just feather the throttle at 2800-3500 in 3rd and take it all the way to the steering lock.
6:53 - Another shot of the first sweeper. My tires were completely wasted at this point, so there was not a ton of grip. So what do you do? Put it in 5th gear and... Hammer time! Vehicle speed = 45 or 50, while tire speed approached 150+ lol. Either way, the car is still stable while I ride the left foot on the brake while matted to the floor.

Anyways I guess I am trying to say I love my car!

150 wheel speed? wtf! I did 120 on a skid pad once. I was physically traveling less than 5 tho lol.

I was thinking the same when you posted this video earlier this week. The car has come a long way from what I have studied through videos that are out there.
The 3:19 entry is sick. The car seems to take the bumps without a problem.
Good stuff!!! :alright

Yea, People are always knocking on the stuff from overseas. Believe me there is A LOT of crap over there. But, when you own the entire plant, and you are making coilovers for over a dozen manufactures you tend to save your highest quality stuff for your own personal company.
The only actual suspension mods on my car are BC racing coilovers, UUC camber arms and rtabs. I still use a factory sway bar setup

From your videos its obvious you can drift and the car can take it. Its hard to tell you what we think the car will need. You're the one driving it all the time. If you're looking to prevent a "potentially end a race weekend early" scenario then keep an eye on parts that are taking a lot of abuse. Bushings get the worst of it but if they're wearing that is good. It means they are taking the stress that is being put on the car. Time in RPM is an engine killer. The more "time" spent in higher RPM ranges, the more "stress" the motor has.
From what I've read with your current setup, you basically have the mileage of my car with healthy and upgraded components. I have 234k miles on my bottom end and general chassis of the car. Granted I've replaced most if not all of the "general" wear items, but I proceed to not only DD my car but take it to AutoX, Track and Drit events.
I believe that once you're "caught up" with general wear or maintenance items on a car, all you have to do is watch certain components and be mindful of what you're doing to the car.

Thanks,
The car is at secret services right now getting the complete run down and clean up. Due to my "get to the track and drive" attitude, My engine bay was a nightmare, wires everywhere, dirty grime and oil everywhere... Not a pretty site.
Secret Services have tucked all the wires and cleaned up all of the oil and grime, wrinkle black and polishing everything. Made a new coolant expansion tank and catch can set up. They will also be installing my new smaller SPA turbo and S-Max intercooler system. After those are installed a new 3 to 4 inch downpipe will connect to a new 4 inch stainless exhaust with aero muffler.
Then the car will go off to TRM for a race prep. A weight loss program is finally in store for my boat. They will also be performing needed maintenance on my motor such as fixing my vanos and doing a tune to maximize the response and torque of the motor with the smaller turbo and more efficient intercooler. Maybe even a race gas tune so I can bump up the timing for an even more bottom happy motor.

sweet, so is D1USA comming back next year and if they dont then will you just do local comps here and there or will you try to run in FD although I know that would mean having to change tire sponsors

You're welcome, it looks like you're currently doing some upgrades with a little checkup on things while its there. That is the right idea if you want to maintain the car and get an idea of where things are at. Unfortunatly some things you cannot predict. Its just the way it is with cars sometimes.
I've had my M3 for over 5 years and I've done plenty of AutoX and a few Track Days. Not to mention daily driving everyday. The first drift day I go to I blow a power steering hose 3rd drift of the day. The car has actually seen more stress at other events but for some reason it gave at the skid pad. Luckily I was able to fix it and got back out there sideways.
My overall point here is that you never know what is going to break until it actually does. So...if its not broken dont fix it.
