as you can see in the second pic the plastic that's around the screw holding it down is broken. and of course...the duct tape *ugh*

Whats the name of the part/parts that I've circled in this pic? That big black thing isn't properly fastened to the car, causing an annoying rattling sound and the valve coming out of the engine (at the top end of the circle) has duct tape all around it causing the car to choke up on me. I want to replace it asap but don't even know where to begin looking.

Cheers

that is the factory airbox.

also, it sounds like your intake boots were duct taped to hide the tears/ leaks. in your case, just take the car to a bmw dealer or bmw mechanic.

Sweet! Thanks a lot.

Any point in getting a sports version of that? It's $400 so I'm wondering if it's worth it at all to go with that or just get a factory replacement from a scrapyard.

sports version? you mean an aftermarket intake?

no, unless you like negligeable power loss and/or gain; and, depending on the design, the added ability to suck up enough water to cause your engine to hydralock.

I would not consider either of those. The first one at least has a heat shield, but who knows how effective that shield actually is. It's also appallingly expensive - near Dinan territory.

The second link is a hot air intake and will likely hurt performance.

Check out the classifieds to see if you can find someone selling the stock air box. It should run you $50-$80. It's a very nice design and you basically can't touch it without making it worse. From what you described, you might just need the intake boot, not the whole air box. I'm not sure about the I6s, but on the V8 there is only one bolt holding the air box in place. Other than that, it is rubber mountings that just slide into place and hose clamps to attach to the air channel and MAF housing. The circle is obscuring the part where the problem seems to be coming from, but I'm guessing you might just need #9 in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DD63&mospid=47585&btnr=13_0409&hg=13&fg=15

Post more pics with closeups and no circles, and I'm sure someone can tell you what you need. I doubt it is the whole air box.

you can find a dinan intake for around 150-200 shipped on these forums (or the 'other' one), or hit up your local junkyard for the few parts you are looking for

dont listen to the 'im going to start a debate in every thread pertaining to basically everything' crew, do whatever you want, i put a dinan intake on my car and it feels the same before and after, not really a gain, no loss, but i just gave in to their crew, hopefully they don't catch this

to be honest i don't feel like putting down that kind of money if there's no real difference in the performance of the car.

What the f*ck did they do to your car??? The MAF was like cut in half or what? From those pictures I can already see several broken/missing parts and you're worrying about an aftermarket CAI? :nono

It looks like you need #3 and #5 in the following diagram: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E39/Sedan/USA/528i-M52/LHD/M/2000/browse/fuel_preparation_system/mass_air_flow_sensor/

The suggested list price on these parts is $35 on bmwfans, though you can probably do better through forum sponsors like bavauto or eactuning.

As for the broken air box, you can try gluing that plastic back together first. Failing that, get an air box from someone parting out a 528i in the classifieds, or at your local junk yard. You could also get the parts I mentioned in the diagram from the classifieds or the junk yard.

As far as installation, you'll know what to do just by looking at it. It's all hose clamps and that one bolt near the broken plastic. Here's the diagram for the air box (intake muffler): http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E39/Sedan/USA/528i-M52/LHD/M/2000/browse/fuel_preparation_system/intake_silencer/

Loosen the hose clamps connecting it to the MAF housing, intake resonator and air channel (bmwfans.info calls this an intake manifold).
Remove the bolt and rubber washers near the broken plastic.
Grab the air box by the corner near the engine and rotate it up and out of the car.

If you need any other parts numbers, check out http://bmwfans.info/. You can also use www.realoem.com. I typically use realoem, but in this case the illustration on bmwfans made much more sense to me compared to your pictures.

Good luck.

Gluing didn't work but I improvised and drilled a nice metal cap onto the broken plastic and snapped it back together. No more damn rattling and there's no way it's breaking now :D

As for those 2 pieces: I'm having trouble finding them but I found out a buddy of mine gets discounts from BMW so I'll try to get him to get them for me.

Thanks to everyone for your help/input. Greatly appreciated.
