SO the right rear door would not open. took apart the door with it closed...(not a simple task) messed around with the lock mechanism forever...never got it open.... hooked the battery terminal back up and it worked! So while I had it apart replaced the window regulator and motor. Also replaced the center engine compartment closing panel, part no
51718158237 , then the windshield cowl screen part no 51718159292 and the two little parts on either side COVERING
51718193201 and 202. All parts came from ECS tuning..very good service:redspot Now tracing down water in rear floor board and starting to think about the front window regulator along with the seat covers that house the adjustment controls...and the darn sun roof needs fixin as well. While visiting a friend at his shop, we hooked my 540 up to this machine and ran it for two one hour cycles. http://www.motorvac.com/products/CarbonCleanMCS245.html

Finished shadow-lining my windows with the tape...looks like I'll have to redo them in the spring when it's a little warmer out. Side moldings are finished in plasti dip, can't even tell. That bend in the rear window kill me, but over all from a few feet away it looks like it was made with the car. Over all taking everything apart was easy, its just giving it the professional look is hard if you've never done it before. The front driverside was painted by the bodyshop for some reason..and it looks almost exactly the same.

Been gathering parts for two big jobs - the valley pan gasket leak and a new suspension. In the interim I started on another problem that's been bugging me - the SRS light which has been on since I bought the car. I made a diode to fool the passenger seat sensor (I had read the code earlier) and treated the passenger seat to some Leatherique while I had it out of the car. The diode fix is described here:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=435963
Not sure if the diode will work since the seat is still in my dining room. Guess I'll figure it out tomorrow one way or the other.

Today my car hit 130,000 on the odo. thought it would be a good time to do some stuff to the car seeing as an oil change was in order. So started with that, then moved on to the tranny oil and filter. even though i have the orange sticker which means i didnt ever really have to do it but thought it was the best way to go.
After finishing that did brakes all the way around pads and discs. stops on a dime like always. while up front decided to do the upper and lower control arms. Car is mint in and out and i couldnt be happier with her after my first year of ownership. :redspot 97 arctic silver 540i 130,000

went and got something out of my trunk and found it was full of snow! Apparently one of the 4 fasteners holding the trunk lid on worked itself loose and fell into the drip channel, leaving the one corner unsealed to the elements. Quick fix to put the bolt back, but now I have to bust out the shop vac later and suck the snow out.
Also noticed one of my clear turn indicators on the fender appears to have been tampered with, the lens is missing. I'm going to convince myself it just fell off because I don't even want to think about what would happen had I found someone trying to take something from my vehicle.

I went thru the hassle of taking the trim off and bringing it inside to tape up. Around the back window corner it's a little umm not perfect, but not noticeable either, unless you know that it was originally chrome, and you look for the imperfections.
Also I replaced drag link, tie rod ends and sway bar links last night in 10 degree weather:buttrock. After an hour or so, and 2 beers down, I had to come in and layer my socks. You will not find any limitations to how low you can go from the EAC coils, rather your car will determine that by things like scraping, tire rub etc. If you want to run a really slammed look these coilovers will get you there.

Sucks! I always wonder what people say to themselves when they hit a BMW. I'm thinking along the lines of "Oh s***! of all cars, I had to hit a BMW"
regardless of what year or model.
They have insurance?
Before I bought the 540, I hit a 3 series in my Acura Integra. I had (and still have) excellent insurance through AAA, but I still had the reaction you point out above.:embarrasm

I picked up my car from the shop where I had new suspension bits installed. I'd rather not tell how much the parts cost , but I got the labor for $1000 to replace the following:
4 Bilstein HD shocks/struts/mounts, etc.
front wheel bearings/hubs
front thrust arms
front control arms
adjust steering box
front tie rod ends
rear upper control arms
alignment
Some might be able to do it in less time (10 hours), I just didn't have any time to do it myself.
My 50 mph shimmy is gone and I like the feel of the Bilsteins. Firm but not harsh. I can feel bumps more now but they are cushioned, unlike with the original 139k shocks. :cool
I'm happy with the results, not so thrilled about the costs, but I have made the decision to keep the car for a while so it should be worth it in the end.

Partially removed the trunklid wiring harness to find a short causing the trunklid to open by itself. No luck, since the wires were in good shape. Checked the switch by the hood release, and the relay under the glovebox, still no luck. Will test it out today to see if the fiddling did the trick. If not, then I'll try a new key or key battery.

Exhaust leak came from out of nowhere..right under the floor board so it's not even like its going out the rear..sounds beastly, but I think I'll get under there and figure something out. Any recommendations?
Update:
So I crawled under there, to find all 4 nuts holding the pipes to the converters had rusted completely off...strange how all 4 would rust off, but must have been the salt or something. 4 new m8-1.25 nuts and its good to go!

Cut and spray glued fabric from a grey dress shirt to cover my C pillars; the PO had removed the fabric. Looks better than it did before, but has a few glitches. The seams from the yoke of the shirt are visible, but not noticeable.
Did two leatherique treatments on my back seat and headrests. Will do it again once it heats up and I can cook it in the car. When I do that I will redye the package tray too, since it's all faded. Put seats and headrests back in.
Next up: oil and filter change!

There's not too much to see as far as the interior. Just the 9500ix sitting under the RVM with the cord going up into the roof. The LI stuff is hidden behind panels under the driver side dash, right above the hood lever.
As far as getting pulled over, they aren't illegal (in Georgia). 2nd, They also work as parking assists. I have a switch that changes them from Jammer to P/A. Also, I don't plan to jam to gun as I pass the LEOs, I just want to give myself extra time to slow down to a reasonable speed then cut the jamming off. If it just so happens that it I DO JTG the LEO, then, well, I deserve to be messed with. Either way, I'd have the damned things in P/A mode when he got to my window.
Anyhow, just to satisfy your curiosity, I took a few snaps of the RD on the windshield and the mute button/power indicator. Hope you didn't want them On also. If you wanted to see where I installed the LI gear...Well, I'm not taking apart my lower dash anytime soon but next time I do, I'll add the wires and box to my photo album of the install!
If there's anything else you'd like to know, PM me. I'll gladly explain.

I pulled out the DVD Nav unit to see why it wasn't working. I found out that there is a small flat 6wire strip that connects the unit to the front facia and it was unplugged. Undid some screws and voila it came back on. However, now it will not load the disk. The mechanism that rolls the disks in and out is not functioning. I drove it to the DC Metro station. On the way there, I was reminded about the Sunroof issues, the Rear window regulator problem, the broken front cup holder, the pohone I need to replace, and the front bumper I need replaced.
I shed a tear as I left her with all those ugly cars.
I can't wait to see her again.

ROAD TRIP!
Last week we drove up to San Francisco to visit my daughter. With side trips and around town while there...just shy of 2k miles total. Car ran perfect, smooth, quite. Just reminded me of what a great trip car it is. Absolutely no cooling system issues. The NPG (zero pressure system) is great (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=19541111#post19541111). Opened the radiator cap at almost every gas stop. Never any pressure, never any drop in coolant level.
The only negative is driving and parking a 6-speed manual E39 in the city of San Francisco. My daughter owns a house right in the city, on one of the steep grades, near, but not quite to the top of the hill. On street parallel parking there with a manual trans can be a bit of a challenge. She even gave up and bought her first car with an auto when she moved there.

Passenger fog light was completely blown out- (I mean the whole assembly missing)- when I hit a raccoon coming home from work a week ago.
Ordered a set of fog lights from ebay, and the set arrived yesterday.
Today I installed the missing unit, compared it to the remaining original, drivers side unit, which seemed noticably less bright and somewhat dull. So I went ahead and replaced the driver side unit as well, and will keep the usable but used driver side assembly as a spare. And hope the next raccoon takes out the driver side unit!

Redoing my Style 19s using the DIY. It's going to be about 4 hours per wheel. Did one today and it's a big improvement over 15 year old narly looking rims.
Also replaced the timing chain tensioner. Old one looked fine but reading this forum makes one do things!

did some spring cleaning, a good once over with a magic eraser, then cleaned the windows and vaccumed. also used a bissell carpet cleaner to clean the floor mats, the water afterwards was a pretty nasty color.
also took some of the old brake fluid out and replaced it with ate super blue racing fluid.
tomorrow i'm going to put some lexol on the seats and possibly change my thermostat housing back to the oem plastic one as the aluminum one is leaking.

Working on replacing the Blower Motor, not done, having trouble removing the center vent duct. A shaft runs through it keeping me from removing it. It has stymied me so far. Any Ideas? The shaft and the motor that turn it are right below the vent on the left and the shaft enters the vent on the right of the picture, this is the Center vent in the dash that needs to come out to gain access the the Fan Motor for replacement.
I hope someone has done this and knows the secret. Thanks

I just purchased a 2000 528i with sport package. The poor baby has needed lots of attention so it's been a daily event working on her each evening. Tonight I used the new "Turtle Wax Black Box" kit to wax and shine her. Fantastic product by the way. Well worth the 20 bucks. My wife say the car looks new. We differ on that opinion but it does look GREAT! I'd post up a pick but I'm a newbe here and haven't looked into posting pics as of yet. Tomorrow its a carpet shampoo and window regulator trouble shooting before a 500 mile road trip. (first drive over 50 miles since I saved it from the clutches of an abusive used car dealer last weekend)

540i "Dinan 5" 6 speed --- trans fluid flushed and replaced with MTF-2 per mechanic who read TSB for difficult shifting, with some improvement, then driveshaft center bearing replaced this week ... whole driveline feels tighter, I think the degradation in shifting esp 3rd gear had some relationship to the driveshaft problem, as I've had the car since 2003 (45k mi) and done religious Redline MTL flushes, now 120k mi ... my other mechanic thought it was trans output bearing problem ... I also got Mike Miller's generous opinion twice on this ... (I had already spent too much time online looking for a used Getrag trans) he thought it was simply synchro wear related to abuse of the car before I bought it ... anyway I'm glad its got its true personality back ...

the MTF fluid is not lifetime but the ATF fluid for autos supposedly is. I have never changed mine and i'm almost at 260k on the original tranny and fluid. But you should change it anyway I just feel at this point I don't want to open it up and risk something bad happening.

there is no such thing as "lifetime" ... I assume you're talking about BMW's fallacious concept of lifetime fluids ... reading all knowledgable BMW maintenance sources, there are thoughtful time schedules for fluid changes ... the "lifetime" concept was introduced when "free" maintenance included was introduced, in order to reduce costs to BMW ... but effect is to decrease durability and lifespan of components ...
... though I am shifting better with MTF-2 than with MTL ...
... and still have my delusional goal of keeping this car "forever" ...

i want to do this mod, but i want badly to keep my phone tray (original armrest)... all i want is the storage tray and the tilting not sliding base.
im not having much luck finding if this is possible or what i would have to do to attain it. the phone tray is pretty awesome, i use it for my cellphone (i mean who the hell uses a carphone?!)

Meguir's Colorex - for those of us who have Black E39s this is a must to finish off your wax job or even after a professional detail. Smoothes out a substantial amount of surface scratching. Keeping in mind the end result depends on the original condition of your existing paint.

I did a 3" catback with a Magnaflow, K & N drop in filter and a Stage 1 Dinan Software, Also dynoed it. Dyno numbers were 255hp and 289.45tq. They said my dyno numbers dropped at 4500rpm and so did my AFR. My AFR is sub 10.0 after 4500, they said it should be 12.5 and that im losing about 10-15 hp/Tq because my CVV/PCV is bad(which would explain the smell in my car and howling my car makes when i floor it) So im wondering if anyone has had this issue, i thought a bad CVV/PCV would lean your car out not make it run rich. i'm new here if you cant tell... ha ha
