1. Converted to a zero pressure cooling system. Fully drained the system and refilled with Evans NPG+ waterless coolant, replaced 2 bar cap with a modified 1.4 bar cap.
Interesting! That seems worth a thread to tell all.

What do you mean by delete? If I remove them then I have an empty panel sitting there, so I just decided to make them stay shut so it looks good. Unless there's a cover panel for sale somewhere...

Well, I have changed my mind; went with a powder coat instead of paint and I like it :buttrock
Finally got them done:
- H&R 10mm spacers front and rear
- 17x9 all around Style 32 powder coated silver
- 255/40/17 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050A (still old, about 55% life on them)
- 245/45/17 front ..... just because I've found them on craiglist, $150 !!! ($216 each @Tirerack) .... used for about 200 miles, practically brand new tires:alright both Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 ....they looks little "stretchy" but for that price you can't complain :D
a few crappy pics:
That's how they look powder coated in silver, I've paid $300 for four of them in Chicago.

Installed new front suspension. H&R Sport Springs riding on Bilstein Sport shocks with new upper mounts. Also replaced the front thrust arms with FCPGroton units, now the vibration at speed is gone. But I need a new tie rod end, or at least the boot, since I found the driver side one is ripped upon inspection. We'll see how long these parts last, but my E39 just rolled over to 173,000 miles. Doing the same setup for the rears tomorrow. Car rides considerably lower and stiffer in the front. I have subs in the back, and the rears were always lower than the front (leading me to believe I had a failed mount or something) so we'll see. When I'm all done, I think I'll put up some pics.

Tues:
Drove 180 miles southwest, disassembled some bloke's 540iT in his driveway, negotiated price, and drove two cars home.
Weds:
Broke / twisted the driver's seat whilst showing the wife all of the controls. Passenger seat was already broken.
Sat/Sun:
Removed both seats and repaired both cable sets in each. Had the drivers seat up and apart three times before I was happy with the leveling/squareness.
Fixed the shoulder belt height adjuster.
Replaced battery.
Touched up a few stone chips on the front. ( I already had a quart of topaz blue on the shelf; I have too many blue cars :) )
Poked, prodded, read, researched, played. These cars have a lot of subtle features, and a few easter eggs.
Next up:
Figure out how to hang a front plate on. Probably go with the Eurodyne thing.
Figure out how to bump the Spal fan "on" temp up a bit. It comes on way too early.
Cup holders. The first thing the wife did upon seeing the car was bitch about broken front, and NO rear. :)
See what breaks next.

Cleaned my ICV today and it made a big difference!
Cleaned my Idle Control Valve (ICV) today... (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1468492)
Here's the DIY for ICV cleaning.
Want your car to run good? -Go home tonight and clean this (ICV 540i v8) (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=589747)
I also bedded in my brakes to eliminate squealing and it worked!
Annoying brake squeal eliminated by "Bedding" the brakes! (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1468520)
This is the procedure I used...
"If you've just installed a big brake kit or even if you've only changed your brake pads and rotors, you should "bed" them in by following the instructions below. Proper bedding of brakes will improve pedal feel, reduce or eliminate brake squeal, and extend the life of your pads and rotors.
When following these instructions, please avoid doing it in the presence of other vehicles. Breaking in your new pads and rotors is often best done very early in the morning, since other drivers will have no idea what you are up to and will respond in a variety of ways ranging from fear to curiosity to aggression. And an officer of the law will probably not understand when you try to explain why you were driving so erratically! Zeckhausen Racing does not endorse speeding on public roads and takes no responsibility for any injuries or tickets you may receive while following these instructions.
From a speed of about 60mph, gently apply the brakes to slow the car down to about 45mph, then accelerate back up to 60mph and repeat. Do this about four or five times to bring the brakes up to operating temperature. This prevents you from thermally shocking the rotors and pads in the next steps.
Make a series of eight near-stops from 60 to about 10 mph. Do it HARD by pressing on the brakes firmly, just shy of locking the wheels or engaging ABS. At the end of each slowdown, immediately accelerate back to 60mph. DO NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP! (Note: With less aggressive street pads and/or stock brake calipers, you may need to do this fewer times. If your pedal gets soft or you feel the brakes going away, then you've done enough. Proceed to the next step.)
During this process, you must not come to a complete stop because you will transfer (imprint) pad material onto the hot rotors, which can lead to vibration, uneven braking, and could even ruin the rotors.
Depending on the pads you are using, the brakes may begin to fade slightly after the 7th or 8th near-stop. This fade will stabilize, but not completely go away until the brakes have fully cooled. A bad smell from the brakes, and even some smoke, is normal.
After the 8th near-stop, accelerate back up to speed and drive around for as long as possible without using the brakes. The brakes will need at least 10 minutes to cool down. Obviously, it's OK to use the brakes to avoid an accident, but try to minimize their use until they have cooled.
If club race pads, such as Pagid Orange or Porterfield R4, are being used, add four near-stops from 80 to 10mph. If full race pads, such as Pagid Black, are being used, add four near-stops from 100 to 10 mph.
After the break-in cycle, there should be a blue tint and a light gray film on the rotor face. The blue tint tells you the rotor has reached break-in temperature and the gray film is pad material starting to transfer onto the rotor face. This is what you are looking for. The best braking occurs when there is an even layer of of pad material deposited across the face of the rotors. This minimizes squealing, increases braking torque, and maximizes pad and rotor life.
After the first break in cycle shown above, the brakes may still not be fully broken in. A second bed-in cycle, AFTER the brakes have cooled down fully from the first cycle, may be necessary before the brakes really start to perform well. If you've just installed a big brake kit, the pedal travel may not feel as firm as you expected. After the second cycle, the pedal will become noticeably firmer."

Well my dad is (unfortunately) a Mercedes man...and has been for his entire life. He swore by them so I let him have his fun and told him to get the Contis's. All I can say is, they're great. I drive my car a LOT...and they still look brand spankin' new. - When I say it feels like I'm rollin' on pillows..I'm not kidding. I had Yokohamas earlier and they provided a more aggressive drive, but the Conti's (for my I6...snail engine) are great for my purposes.
Sorry I couldn't be of any help!

Bought a powerwasher today...all I can do is :D because my car looks :eek2 and its already gotten me some mad :booty.
All dirty thoughts aside I highly recommend getting a powerwasher - even if its electric - although, I don't have the patience to sit around and spend 5 minutes per wheel with an electric washer so I bumped up to a 2600 psi gas powered system. It takes...1 minute of spraying, BMW/Meguiar's wheel wash, a few microfiber towels to dry with, and bam...wheels look bangin...

I own a 5 hp, 2600psi pressure washer, but I wouldn't use it on anything on my car!! It will peel paint, clear coat and do unbelievable damage in the blink of an eye. I blew holes in a wooden fence by just getting just a little too close.

yesterday I put a new hydraulic belt tensioner on my mom's 528i and put her AC compressor belt back on. Going to have the system vacuumed out and refilled tonight. Hoping it works well and there are no further problems with it. Too hot to not have AC working.
Had a right rear tire blow out on my own e39 Friday night. Put the spare on there for the time being, time to focus on getting some new rubber for that car. It's always something.

I didn't know that you could vacuum out & refill the A/C system. But, it does make sense to have the old refrigerant removed before the new enters. Who or what kind of shop would you recommend for me to take my 2002 M5 to... ?

Refinished my headlights today. They weren't too bad yet but after refinishing my wife's totally foggy headlights on her VW Cabrio and seeing the result I had to do mine too. They all look like new now. The 3M kit is worth every penny.
Afterwards a nice wash and vacuum made the car look SWEET !

You only put a vacuum on the system if it has lost all pressure. The vacuum pump is to remove air from the system before adding refrigerant. As long as there is pressure, no air can get in, no vacuum needed.
After replacing any component they will purge and vacuum the system.

air = moisture
moisture = bad
Like chief said, you only draw a vacuum so you have nothing but refrigerant in the system. You don't want anything else in there.

Blazing hot today in Nashville. I used the key remote to open all the windows, to let it cool off a little before I got into it. Got in about 10 minutes later, started her up, let the AC start working and then rolled up the windows, except that the right rear didn't budge. I turned the car off and on a couple times (position 2), because in the past this has fixed windows acting funny, but no dice. I tried using the right rear door's switch instead of the master, and from the back seat I could hear a distressing crunching sound coming from the door area where the guts of the window are. So the window is stuck in the down position, and I have uncovered parking at home.
Went to my indy shop, and at least they threw in a "sorry" when delivering the news that the part alone will be about $700, since on the rear windows, the regulator and the motor is one piece, and when one element goes you have to get a whole new assembly. The shop guys told me that window failures are more common in the Summer, because heat causes the plastic pulleys involved to break more readily. I'll be visiting the shop early tomorrow morning to get it fixed.
The best part is that I rarely ever use the rear windows, so I'll be paying out a good chunk of cash just to get the damn window rolled back up. And I'm sure that now that one window has gone bad, the rest will probably follow in short order. . . I'm just hoping it doesn't rain tonight.

Rear window regulator failure
I've done this repair myself. The part is NOT $700. I paid $285 from the dealer for the part, then I installed it in a few hours in my small-ish garage.
EACtuning sells it as well, for the same price. Buy it and have someone install it, for my sake. Don't spend $700 on the part!!

Just got back from having the repair done (right-rear window regulator/motor), and I misunderstood the initial quote: the $700 figure included labor, and actually today the total came to a bit under that, with $325 for the OEM replacement from BMW. It's still crazy expensive for a window I don't use, but a lot better than I'd feared.

These are a few things I've done over the last couple of weeks to get my car ready for a big upcoming show...
M-Sport steering wheel swap (15 minutes and a piece of cake)
http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/gareth_foley/f1a525b5.jpg
I ordered the M-Tech underpan for my front bumper finally through Bavarian Autosport for $171.95. I'm going to put this bad boy in the next couple of days.
http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/gareth_foley/ce94b1da.jpg
I ordered a few good things from Bimmian.
-Silver gauge rings
-WeissLicht LED license plate lighting modules
-Carbon fiber oil cap cover
http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/gareth_foley/05d32d5f.jpg
http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/gareth_foley/aebdd29a.jpg
Now I'm tempted to buy the carbon fiber ignition coil cover and fuel rail cover
http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/gareth_foley/a02709d9.jpg
These WeissLicht modules replaced the entire license plate light assembly and these replaced my failed Umnitza Ion V4 bulbs.

Still working on the gauge rings...sort of a PITA.

found a coolant leak that was driving me crazy on my mom's 528i. One of the heater hoses had failed, splitting on the very bottom so you could not see it from the top of the engine bay. She was losing a couple OZ of coolant every drive- now I know where it is really going.
Also on Saturday I serviced a 2000 528i, replaced the secondary air pump and surgically removed a wheel speed sensor that had been broken off in the wheel carrier, then installed a new one. That was fun. Car came to me with all sorts of pretty lights on the dash, and left with none.
..and also installed a set of aluminum adjusters into a set of headlights that arrived on Friday. Those went flawlessly and will be shipped back out this morning. Been a 5er filled weekend.

...after discovering that my rad is leaking at the upper neck. It's so small but I noticed the bubbles coming out after driving for a half hour yesterday.
I had this rad changed July 6/09 and have done only 34000 km (not miles) on it. Highly disappointed. I knew before buying that these cars had a history of short lived rads, but holy crap..so soon!?
I'll be calling the garage to see where they got the rad from and hopefully it's from a dealership in which I hope the 2 yr warranty applies. If not, I will have to seriously consider an aluminum or stainless steel rad. I just have to search this forum for it. I remember seeing it on some others ride.
Thanks for letting me tell my story..:)..all better now..lol

Used a Meguires clay bar system on the tail and headlights. Pulled dirt off, lenses look ultra sharp. Clay bar really amazed me with its' ability to pull dirt off the finish. Paint now shines deep into the coating. Worth the effort to do the entire car's finish, including some very awkward to get to surfaces. I also like the Mcguires' polymer product {paste}. Uncanny looking burgandy color w/ hints of purple. I feel like I stole this vehicle last year. It's a '98 528i and it's a real killer car. Does everything I need to do w/ utter authority and determination. Even the headrests are powered. A mechanic friend of mine today showed me a Lexus 430 he was doing the brakes on and the two needed pad sensors were around $100 a piece. That's madness.

Bought a low km set of struts off a late M5 to go into my 540.
Only $300- seem in great condition- blows me away how light they are, alloy bodied makes a difference.
Same Guy is selling me his M5 swaybars when his eibach ones arrive.
Will get the Beastpower alloy swaybar mounts for them as well.
Also will grab a beautiful front strut bar when his new bling one turns up.
Complete conversion to M5 spec suspension and strut bar with new bushes in the front will be under $1000 Aus. Very happy with that.
I am concerned the ride will be a bit higher than on the M5 but will find out when installed. Mind you, it sits high like a 4wd at the front so anything lower is good.
Oh gave here a wash, and cleaned my style 42 BBS rims- Pain in the arse but so beautiful.

Installed / worked on over the weekend:
2 new body door seals, but I still have some minor creaking. Going to adjust the door closure posts to hopefully fix the creaking.
Outdoor ambient temperature sensor! It works! Nice to only have to press the single "Max" button cool off the car.
Leatherique throughout the interior. The rear seats look factory new. All the but the diver seat is done - Amazing how nice it looks, though I need to re-do the front seats and let them sweat some more!
ToDo:
DCS module to Module Masters to get rebuilt.
New / refurbished front bumper.
Drop tranny pan / replace fluids & tranny filter.
Replace A/C buttons that are cracked! :( Anyone know of a cheap place to get replacements?
Fix three minor dings on the body / ground effects.

Wrapped up a full shock/strut/spring install on my '98 528i. I also replaced rear swing arm ball joints, integral links, and the front brake rotors and pads... I'm moving cross-country next week (Indianapolis, IN to Boulder, CO! :D), so not a day too soon for getting everything back together!

Yeah, I've done that too... I comfort myself with the slightly better fuel economy and the occasional slightly simpler repair job... It's not much, but it's something.
That said, the new suspension definitely makes it feel faster, which is worth an awful lot if you aren't racing the thing.

Hey guys, first post, but I've been lurking for awhile and just picked up my 530i a few weeks ago. Will post pics to the registry when I get a chance to do a photoshoot.
Back on topic, today I replaced the valve cover gasket. Was able to do it w/o removing the fan since I didn't wanna deal with that. But, it definitely made it a lot more challenging to pry off the valve cover. Boy is my back sore.
Next up is the equally notorious oil filter housing to engine gasket and that should (crosses fingers) take care of all the leaks.

What the indy shop did:
Replaced my fuel tank breather valve, CCV hose, valve cover gaskets and oil filter stand gasket + changed filter and oil.
Checked out my vanos (it's OK), steering wheel pulling to left (it's an alignment issue, not suspension) and the tink tink sound underneath the car (loose u-joint on drive shaft. sigh)
What I did:
Entered my credit card pin.
What's next:
New tires and an alignment.

I pulled out the front struts and added them the spares pile.
Grabbed the new to me M5 struts- removed the M springs and added some King spring 30mm drop springs.
Put them in the car and looked at her for a long time- much better but still will be nicer when they settle after a few weeks.
Put new rubber all round on my staggered style 42's - love my BBS wheels.
Went for a drive-
I had the tyres on before the struts and it transformed the steering- love it.
With the new struts- even better- bit stiffer than stock but heaps better feel and response- like a new one!
Still to get to the pain of the rear replacement - yet to decide on the rear springs, may try the M5 first and see how it is. But then given the pain of the job may just grab the lowered springs and do them at the same time.
All my rear end looks perfect underneath. The front could do with some nice new bushes on the lower arms.
I am waiting on some M5 sway bars and will get the alloy billet rear sway mounts.
Also have a beautiful billet front strut tower brace too come soon I hope.
Love my car.
Tried to get some extra staggered style 42's off fleabay but went for $1000 so was too much for a spare set.
DAMN- wish they did 17 x 10 in these!

You would not believe what I've gone through to repair my E39 1998 540i Dinan sunroof. Tried to replace rails using online instructions myself --- all day process, didn't work, broke one ... reordered one, had a local mechanic repair it, did good job ($300 labor), but glass lower/not flush with roof, causing wind noise (good water seal). Installed a wind deflector to get rid of the noise. Took some time to clean off the adhesive from the tape I sealed roof with before repair. Then had to do cosmetic repair of inside sunroof cover (a bunch of my interior cloth covering is peeling off). Reglue and finish with various cloth paints. Whole project on and off, in spare time 1-2 months, but it looks real good !

There is an original factory coating on the lights. Once they have been polished you have removed it, and they will haze faster.

Picked up a set of BMW m5 style 17/8 rims from Fleabay.
Come with usable tyres and have gutter rash- $320 AUS shipped.
I will use these as track rims with semi slicks.
Pity they are not staggered but for the price they suit fine.
They will also see use with the semi slicks on fast road runs.
Will be good to have a spare set for naughty days.
My roadies are BBS RS 740 two piece in 8 and 9 inch. I will use new rims initially on the car while I restore the BBS.
A set of average BBS came up on Fleabay but ended at $1000 just as rims. So as that was too much I figured I would go cheap and grabbed these as they will only be used with semi slicks.

Followed up my VCG job with the oil filter housing to engine gasket. Hopefully that should take care of all the leaks, because I really don't want to do either job again. Spent a long time cleaning out the lower engine bay too from all the oil spray. I don't think I've ever used more brake parts cleaner in the past few days than I have in my life, gunk everywhere.
And just my luck, the driver's side angel eye blows out. It just never ends...but I must say, I still love this car.

Did this a week ago but forgot to post it... I fixed my rear passenger window regulator. The cable winding was fubar'd so I ordered a new one from FCP for $80. I know it's not OEM, but i'd rather spend the $280 on something to keep The Cylon running than to fix a window.

mail man arrived with a roll of Carbon weave trim for me to experiment with.
?Thinking of doing the wood trim as I don't really love the Burr walnut- too shiny and not really suited to my all black leather.
Have tried a phone it looks great and not cheap shiny crap.
If I don't like it in the end I can just peel it off and then I will sand back the wood and stain it very dark and then clear it.
I have seen other members do it and It looked great.
So will have a go.
Just got to get the trim off?

Not so much what I did to my E39 today as what my E39 did to me today. The fan clutch failed and left me stranded in 100 degree Houston weather. I wanted to go home and get my fan clutch tools, but after 15 minutes of cooling down, it worked again, so I drove home.

last night I put the rear end on jack stands to check out ball joints and bushings. Going to need to do rear ball joints and wishbones at a minimum here soon. Lots of play at the passengers side wishbone ball joint.

Drove it for the first time in six weeks and everything feels amazing!! I am glad my dad could start it up for me while I was gone so that I didnt have to worry as much about something failing on me upon first startup today. It sound and performs exactly as it did when I left and I am very pleased!

Changes brake fluid. Decided on ATE SL.6. Used the tried and true 2 man pump method. One liter did it.

Waxed her with some serious stuff from P&S. No swirls. Just a nice deep shine.
