Now that it's finally not too cold or wet outside, I can resume my tinkering with the car:
- Installed the rubber front chin spoiler which seems to be missing from 80% of the pre-facelift e39s I've seen.
- Installed an OE M5 trunk lip spoiler. The shop was able to match the paint spectacularly but they were only willing to install it with 3M tape. Since I'm a masochist, I purchased the Betalink K1 adhesive kit and did it myself. Fitment was perfect and I was very very careful when applying the adhesive and mounting the spoiler - as such, I didn't have much excess to clean up afterwards.

Nothing!
My Racing Dynamics front strut brace arrived, and the rain prevented the easy install. Looking forward to putting it in - main reason is to protect my strut towers. If there's any change, benefit in feel while driving, then great.

I do declare I killed the engine on the Biarritz Blue 540i :(
How faded is the rear parcel shelf?
My Biarritz Blue 540i would like a non-faded replacement!

Perfect day for a detail, weather mild and overcast......started with the interior...making sure everything was a dust free as possible, conditioned all the leather including steering wheel, gear knob.
Then the exterior, started with the wheels being washed, then washed the car, followed by clay, followed by another wash....then dried. then waxed with Zymol, and then finished off with Autoglym quick detailer spray. Dressed the tyres and it's done, and only took 5 hours. Overall a great day!

I had one on my 99 528iT. It came loose a couple of times due to ice and snow and one day I noticed it was gone.

Disconnected the battery due to door lock actuator issues (drivers and passenger doors not unlocking). While doing that I sheared the stud off for the negative terminal... Bought a new one from Chevy.. Turns out they use the same part. Went to start the car and the alarm went off, but after a few minutes it shut off and everything worked again. Weird.
Also reattached the piece of chrome trim between the window and the door panel on the drivers rear side.

Wasted my time.
Wasted 30 minutes gerbling with a Racing Dynamics front strut brace.
One of the bolts it came with? The nut which was on it was completely stripped.
The bolt was literally missing threads.
Then, for giggles, I mounted both of the base plates...only to see there is no way to insert the bolts as the holes aren't close to lining up...
The machining/engineering wasn't palpable on this strut brace.
It is not my car, nor strut towers...this strut brace looks like it was not made by their A-Team Quality Control.
Very disappointed, sending it back to Turner Motor Sports.

Busy day with the old girl. Started 2 weeks ago when I rebuilt the DISA, no more SES light. Yesterday through today installed new CCV and all hoses attached to it. New PS reservoir and hoses. The usual spark plugs and air filter.
I have to say at 200,000 miles it pulls like a train and runs very smooth.

It's on an off, I can't comment on whether its maintenance related, wear in period, or manufac defect.
Then again, I noticed your located in Georgia... I wonder if the humid weather has anything to do with it. CCV systems commonly go out from build up of condensation and the engine not fully warming up.

I've been lucky enough to get it back up to 3K miles a qt from 1 qt every 700 miles but I think I can improve those numbers after replacing the valve itself with an OEM one. I still also have a vacuum leak noise on light throttle in first and second sometimes third gear. Hoping I can get rid of that when I go in for surgery for the second time.

Available at most stores:
http://www.amazon.com/Zymol-Z507-Leather-Cleaner-oz/dp/B0009JKISG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1428248790&sr=8-2&keywords=Zymol+Leather+Cleaner
It works really well, even on the doors.
Did my friend's car a few weeks ago...his door panels were disgusting.
Within a hour his interior looked new.
Used it many times over the years.
It's designed to work with Vinyl and Leather.
It's a great soap that removes dirt easily.
Spray it on liberally, wipe in with a soft sponge. Dirt comes right out. Rinse sponge often in clean bucket of warm water.
Finish doors with 303 Aerospace.
Finish seats with Lexol Leather Conditioner.

I've always had great success with a microfiber cloth, lots of elbow grease, and a 1 to 10 ratio of either Woolite to Warm water or in more dirty cases, 1 to 8 ratio of warm water to dawn dishwashing liquid. Damp cloth but NOT soaked. Rub and rub. Finally, with a separate cloth thats quite damp with clear water, wipe clean and let air dry or dry with a third totally dry cloth. This has worked for me for years.

The biggest reason I want a homelink over the clip on style is because the way my house is set up its easiest to come in the garage but the truck stays parked outside. Don't want someone to easily be able to just reach in and hit the button to open the door when I am not home.

I changed all my license plate bolts to aircraft grade torx, and painted the outside bezel of my OEM grill to replace the cheap all black one ive had in for a few weeks. When painting with spray paint I highly recommend not cleaning the item, or sanding it, and then just spray as much paint on it as fast as you can ;-) Also I removed the tail lights and hit them with some compressed air to get all the dirt out of the top of the seams. I also put 6 Pearl Jam albums in the 6 disc, starting with Ten, then VS., then Vitalogy, NoCode, Binaural, then last Riot Act. Yield, Lost Dogs, and Lightning Bolt will be rotated intermittently.

Seriously. Also, I was pleasantly surprised that after removing the carbon fiber cloth and adhesive (lots of acetone and scrubbing with a microfiber cloth), my Vavona trim still looks amazing, save for the glove box trim which had a crack in it before wrapping and the piece to the right of the steering wheel that got a crack the other day. I actually forgot how good a nice set of vavona looks. I'll probably be posting in the classifieds when I find a tech graphite auto shifter knob, or manual swap the car.

- Changed the non-return valves behind both VANOS solenoids
- Installed new solenoid gaskets
Removing the drivers side solenoid was made a little more difficult by the fact that the PO had used RTV on the solenoid gasket. Much swearing later, it was out and I cleaned the mating surface. After getting both valves out, it was obvious that the o-rings on both of the installed valves were essentially flattened to nothingness and I suspect were allowing some oil to drain back. The passenger side solenoid gasket was leaking and the valve had a little bit of gunk in it. Because of this gunk, I'll probably do an engine flush next time I change the oil.
This was a cheap experiment to see if it resolves some of the VANOS noise. I'll have a better idea tomorrow morning if it made any difference after the engine has had a chance to drain down overnight. Then I'll take it for a spirited drive and see how it is when the engine is hot.

Replaced upper control arms (Meyle HD) and headlight adjusters. Learned that in a post-facelift (01/2001) touring, which has halogens, not Xenons, you need to buy the so-called Xenon adjusters from Bavauto, not the older "non-xenon" ones.
Just got a bunch of screws, clips etc and the lower front (right) wheel liner where the outside temp sensor clips in. Took out the old screws and binding washers from the belly rock shield at the front and put in new ones. Replacing all clips in that area. After 17+ years, I guess she needs some new bits. Tired of cleaning off rust. Plus the wheel liner had an encounter with a too-high parking curb and was ripped up a bit on the bottom. New screws / bolts and clips for all front wheel liners.

Well.... yesterday my mesh grill piece on my M-Sport bumper ate a 4' piece of pallet that was bouncing along the highway. It was still sticking out like a bull's horn when I finally stopped and took a little effort to get it out. Smashed a huge hole in the mesh, broke off the brake duct, and slightly broke the edge of the opening to the black air duct in front of the radiator.
Today.... I ordered a new mesh piece. Tomorrow, I'll order a new brake duct.

New plugs which fixed 3 issues:
-low rpm stutter
-hard hot restarts
-dipping below idle when going from a gear into neutral
These BMW NGK plugs had about 70K miles and I always use 93.

Thank you, it took around three hours. I probably did close to 10 mini coats. Also the clear was at least 5. It's near flawless in person. I may buy another clear to bring out the anthracite.

Had the SES light pop on and rough idle along with it stalling out. Was concerned but searched the forum and decided it was the idle control valve. Did some wrenching and pulled it out, cleaned it, reassembled and runs perfect again. Thanks to this forum I think I saved a couple hundred dollars today.

Might as well also look at your CCV, i'm debating on pulling out my ICV too, what method did you use to clean it?
Also, what does the other end of the ICV go into? I mean is there a gasket or something on the other side? I'm just trying to figure out if theres so much resistance to pulling it out then whats holding it in?

New radiator arrived from clickableautomotive, Behr Service unit. Looks a bit better built than the one I got a few years ago that ended up being Made in India for some reason (ebay oddity). This one is Made in South Africa, and been sitting around for a while by the look of that manufacture date. Clickableautomotive told me that as it's Behr, would have bmw information scratched off, but I thought Behr Service was a different ball game?
Funny how you got those little tabs on each corner of the tanks where the seals sit, least I know it's in there.

Changed idler and belt tensioner pulleys, had to JB Weld the left mount back onto the radiator since a 4' piece of pallet penetrated the Msport bumper mesh grill, trashed the brake duct, and pushed the radiator completely off the mount. I'm surprised the JB Weld worked. I use it on just about everything, but wasn't expecting it to hold that pin so securely so I could get the rubber stop on there and mount it. The radiator is only a few years old. It would seem like a giant waste of money buying another just for the mount.

Replaced the squeaky old clutch-pedal hinge bushings along with the clutch spring that lashes to the outside of the pivot for the clutch master. Replaced the accelerator cable ('99 528i still uses cable). Much smoother! Re-adjusted the gas pedal stop. Disabled the clutch switch with PA Soft BMWScanner 1.4.0 and coded the windows to do one-touch down and manual up. Set the alarm to optical confirmation only, and the doors to all unlock with one press of the remote. Feels like I'm in a different car ....

Found a puddle of coolant today and investigated. Looked like bleed screw on thermostat, but instead it is the actual neck where the bleed screw is screwed in. Watched the coolant slowlyyy collect at the neck, not the screw.
Car has got hot previously while bleeding the system (below red), so I guess that could of contributed to premature failure. Perhaps that and it being a VAICO part. Febi Bilstein next I think.

The car looks awesome! I can't believe that the bumpers will do. I really want some... my front bumper is scraped up pretty bad, anyway, so that one I know I'll be replacing eventually.

Got any photos of those vacuumhoses you did?
Posted this entry in the wrong thread, here we go.

Here's the info on the vacuum stuff I replaced:
on this realoem page I replaced numbers 8-12
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DN51&mospid=47548&btnr=11_2287&hg=11&fg=45
for the hoses I used silicone 3.5mm high temp line that I found on eBay. I bought like 3 meters just to make sure I had enough. You should have plenty if you get 2 meters though. Number 8 wasn't really necessary it was just $2 so I did it.
I did 1 and 6 from this page
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DN51&mospid=47548&btnr=11_2675&hg=11&fg=45
1 came with parts 2,3,&4 already attached.
I got 8,9,10 from this page. The diagram is really bad though
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DN51&mospid=47548&btnr=34_0547&hg=34&fg=27&hl=59
8 was still in good condition on my car so I left my old one on and saved the new one for later. 10 was the main thing I wanted since mine was collapsed and hard as a rock. Hose 10 connects to the "sucking jet pump" part 1 from the above diagram.
I hope this helps. To replace all of it probably took 1.5 hours

Washed, buffed, waxed, and took her out for a nice drive.. Still have a few very slow oil, steering, and coolant leaks to button up.. Few drops here and there only, but tired of the spots on the garage floor.
Got a vapor problem on passenger headlight I see as well.. :-|

Dropped the rear another 3/4" after learning a bit more about spring preload. Nearly no pre-load now, so more travel for drops and pot holes. First impressions are that Bilstein PSS can be really comfortable on an e39.
First ever tune up completed. I was suspicious of a VCG leak and finding oil in the 5th cyl spark plug well pretty much confirmed it. Looks like next weekend's job

The vacuum line under the I6 intake manifold can crack then cause on throttle whistle and SES light with a "engine too lien" code which will also intermittently shut itself off too.

The whole engine is under vacuum from the CCV system and if the valve cover gasket is not sealed, it can introduce a vacuum leak.

Anyway, getting a new bumper cover put on, the old one is prob repairable if you support it from the back, bind it together and have the front refinished. If anyone in Houston wants it for FREE it's yours. First come first serve.

Is it an OE BMW front bumper? If so, that's like gold and most likely easily repairable as long as there aren't any big pieces missing.

Decided to replace my seat switch with one I pulled from a salvage yard since my driver seatback recline feature doesn't work (thankfully it was positioned right when I got the car). Either the replacement switch is also bad for that feature, I have a dead seat motor, or the cables are jammed in the mechanism, because the replacement switch didn't work either.
