Where did you buy the M5 sway bar from?
Geargrinder had one up for sale awhile back.
Just scour the classifieds here and check the classified over at the M5board; they pop up from time to time.

I know your not asking me but I run them too and Pilot Super Sports are some of the best tires I've ever used. They are consistently rated some of the highest on every tire site and particularly when price is excluded they win basically every competition. I don't use them anymore just because there are good options for cheaper (I love me some bfgoodrich g-force's) but for someone who needs the best the PSS are some of the best street tires out there.

Those are very good tires. My last 2 sets of tires have been PS2's, super sports weren't out when I got my last set of PS2's.
I'll need tires soon, wish the PSS had a little better wear rating. The rears only lasted me 15K miles.
Haven't done anything to my car, just looked at it in the garage today wishing it wasn't pouring outside.
I've got a Dinan MAF that I need to install, I stripped off the black finish and want to do something different with it....maybe my favorite anodized blue??

I've had them on my M roadster for about two years now and from day one I was impressed with them over the continentals that they replaced. They are the best of both worlds, incredibly grippy, quiet, and long lasting. Michelin guarantees them for 35k miles. To top all of that off I think they are fairly inexpensive for tires, for my 540i my fronts were 195 each and the rears 220 each. 235/40/18 and 265/35/18.

Nice? Was it difficult?
Easiest install ever!
Needed 4 things: MY2003 CD53, OE aux-in cable, OE round-pin to flat-pin converter & OE antenna adapter.
- Removed MID and old round-pin tape deck.
- Drilled a 10mm hole in the face of the CD53 while making sure the placement allowed the aux in cable to fit between the radio cage and the edge of the radio bracket.
- Clicked all of the adapters in place.
- Clicked the aux-in cable into the end of flat-pin harness.
- Plugged all cables into CD53.
- Reinstalled MID & Radio.
Took me about 20 minutes, including drilling & mounting the aux-in input on the CD player.

Replaced driver side mirror glass. Brown gunk had covered about 10% of the surface around bottom and side edges.
Pulled some oil out for a UOA. Then I put maybe 2/5 a bottle of Seafoam in the crankcase, rest in the gas tank just before a fill up. Ran it for ~35 miles. Drained and changed oil. Oil came out dirtier than the stuff I pulled out for the UOA. Im sure it could have stayed in longer and done more cleaning without harm. Engine was probably not that dirty to begin with. Last year when valve covers were off inside looked pretty darn good. Motivation for doing this was someone mentioning cleaning a specific oil passage related to vanos noise nonsense. After the treatment and new oil ( same oil I always use : M1 5w30 ), the vanos diesel noise seems to be maybe a touch quieter. Probably no actual effect. *shrug* oil came out dirtier. New oil after a 10 mile drive still looks like new oil. So I got enough of the old out thats for sure.

Installed the replacement outside-temp sensor on my 540i... (it had been dislodged by an unscheduled snow & ice-mediated excursion at 50 mph into the ditch this winter, and it fell off one spring day). Over $40 for a simple thermistor :P But I felt the need to replace it since the dangling wires occasionally send false signals to the HVAC, and it's quite annoying to have uncommanded full defrost heat on a hot humid day when the a/c is running...
Couldn't find a mounting place (pieces of plastic are probably lying in the median 30 miles away) so I drilled a small hole in the right-side incoming air duct and press-fit it there. I turned the key on and was informed it's 89F in the garage. Felt about right, and humidity to match!

Yesterday night when I was leaving work my "service engine soon" light came on. I checked the code and it was P0011 ( Camshaft Position- Timing Over Advanced or System Performance Bank 1):help. After a ton of research, I found out this is one of the worst codes to get if you have a 540i because it might indicate that the timing chain guides are broken. So today I took it to a BMW indy and had it diagnosed. After a few hours I was told that the VANOS solenoid "could" be causing this code so I went ahead and told them to replace it. However, I was also told that if the solenoid doesn't fix the problem then the timing chain is probably off due to broken guides. On the bright side my engine isn't making any loud ticking, knocking, or rattling which all point to broken guides, so I really hope its the VANOS solenoid. I'm getting the car back tomorrow so fingers crossed.

New timing chain tensioner, old one was shot to hell. Pulled the oil pan to replace gasket and check for plastic bits -- came up clean. Oil change (M1 0W-40) and oil filter. New activated charcoal cab filters. Exterior detailed and interior cleaned/conditioned. Italian tune-up.

- replaced broken headlight adjusters ... 3 out of 4 were broken.
- installed new clear corner headlight lenses
- ordered a new turn signal socket. (BMW must have been staffed by morons in their plastics & rubber department ... it was as brittle as the adjusters.)
Just waiting for the '00 M5 clear tails to arrive to finish up the exterior mods.

Conditioned the leather, just the seats, shift boot and steering wheel. Instead of applying with a cloth I basically massaged the conditioner into the leather while wearing a latex glove. It seemed a little dirty when I got to the shift boot. lol. It really soaked up a lot. Then wiped with an old t-shirt after 15-20 mins. Looks and feels great.
Also thought there might be some slow seeping of oil into my plugs after a VCG job ~1.5 years ago. Still pretty clean. But there was a tiny bit of oil in the rear plugs on both sides. Just a few drops, nothing anywhere near the conductive bits. Cleaned it all out and will take a look again in ~6 months. Checked one plug too, looked OK.
Cleared the drain tube on the passenger side cabin air filter box. Cleaned out a surprising amount of sand, ~1/8" deep covering 1/2 of the lowest area, from the bottom of the intake box under the air filter. I guess I picked that up in Cape Cod earlier in the summer. All the filters were in good shape.
Checked fluids/tire pressure and blah.
Edit:
Noticed one tail light was on. For a second thought. Oh crap.. LCM is flaking out on me. But then remembered the parking side marker light feature. Must have hit the blinker to one side when I was cleaning/conditioning the wheel.

It shouldn't. But it was. I'm guessing the previous owner cracked it and thought gluing it.was a good idea where it's.cracked. Almost broke the plastic before I realized what was going on. Heat gun solved the problem :)

@Eurosol: thanks man. I'm trying to refresh the interior a bit!
Need a new shifter / handbrake plus some alcantara boots from leatherz and a new steering wheel.
But my car has the single stage airbag so I don't know if I ca. Retrofit a newer steering wheel in and just use one stage instead of both? I'm guessing I would have issues with codescodes. Any way to cheat and just bypass the airbag and fool the sensor?

Thanks! It needs some tlc still, I've only had it for about 6 months.
The lip is from a ..... (gasp) Mustang Mach 1. It needed a little stretching because the E39 is wider than the mustang but fits fair. Gets the look I wanted and was cheap and I dont care if it gets torn up. I gotta find a drivers fender and order a M-sport bumper.

I've seen a lot of E36 guys do a similar style lip at home as a DIY project. They use weather stripping for garage doors from home depot or similar, and contour it to the shape of the bumper and screw it in. It wont add any functionality this way (really, a lip like that wont add any anyways) but gives the desired look and its not going to get knocked off going down a curb or etc since it will just bend/flex.

Why not wait a little bit? I heard there may be a new strut bar being currently developed for the E39 chassis.
Plus that design has hinges on either side which could be argued defeats the purpose of the strut bar in the first place.

What head unit is that and do you like it? I was thinking of getting the Dynavin N6 (I think that's the model anyways) if they can get the DSP issues resolved. But my next major interior mod will be the suede headliner and pillar conversion.

I don't really understand what DSP issues are. I think mine has them since it resets randomly when listening to a CD/DVD or SD-Card. Typically Aux is the way to go I find. Bluetooth seems to work alright with the phone but an external mic would be nice. Not sure if the reverse camera was ever wired in properly, something I got to look into. It's not a Dynavin or Avin unit or whatever. It's some cheaper chinese knockoff. It work's okay. I mean... I wouldn't pay to have it put in... but it came already installed when I purchased the car. I would definitely like to update it to a slicker, quicker unit as it takes a while before it starts playing music. There's other stuff higher on my list I'd rather spend my money on though :)

Yesterday I replaced the alternator. It took me seven years to figure out my electrical gremlin that was constantly killing my battery and more recently causing ruff idling was the fringing alternator was bad. Crazy thing is I also had the alternator replaced back in 08' but the dying battery issue never went away. Last week I finally said to hell with it I'm going to find this damn electrical draw and a mechanic friend of mine and I went through every system in the car and the draw never went away until lastly he disconnected the alternator and bam, draw goes away, reconnect alternator and draw is back. Hell's bells we found it, FINALLY!!!!!!!!! Ordered new alternator and installed it yesterday and the battery light on the dash also went off as did the recently started ruff idling, which makes me believe either I got a bad alternator back in 08' when I had it replaced the first time or the shop never put the new one in....

Today I cleaned up the spare Tire/wheel (lot of elbow grease and cleanser) and found the outfit that exchanged my spare for my right front (it was out of round) broke off the Lifting Jack (plastic) clamp. This is because...when you put in the spare tire (with the jack in place)...it "hits" the plastic clamp on the jack very easily...breaking it off. I ordered a new one (P/N: 71126765001) from a major BMW parts house. Not a critical parts replacement....but it keeps the jack handle from "floating around".

@dw280: got in contact with shepott. He will be doing a steering wheel for me, as well as handbrake & shift boots, rewrap my arm rest and also do a zhp shifter and handbrake handle. All in alcantara with purple stitching. Wheel is gonna have bmw performance yellow stripe at 12 o'clock to tie in my bmw performance brakes.
Glad he is able to help you out. I can't say it would be my first choice in colors, but as long as it makes you happy that's all that matters right? Haha. He's always done right by me so far, so I think you will be very pleased with his work. Did you tell him I sent you his way? Lol
On a side note, my steering wheel in in the US now, made it through customs in NY and heading south to me now. I can't wait to get it installed.

They old one still has the sleeve on it. This is a relatively common problem. You need to remove the sleeve from the balljoint bolt on the old arm and tap it back in place on the steering knuckle.
The new arm will then slip right in.

Yup. Didn't seem likely to me since titanium is incredibly expensive, but as I think about it, since BBS uses those bolts on their other wheels, it was probably cheaper to use them on factory wheels vs. create tooling and R&D on other metal types.

- replaced MAF
Took it for a drive to check if it solved my P0170 & P0173 issue. Fuel economy improved by a significant amount, so I assume the lean condition is now solved and this was the solution. Acceleration massively improved. No CEL popped up. What I thought was an exhaust rattle has gone away, so I assume it was pinging on acceleration and has been solved with this replacement.
The morning took a turn for the worse, though, when I took it on the highway to do a couple of WOT runs to pull the fuel trim numbers. Stomped the gas and promptly left a trail of smoke behind me. The upper rad hose had blown. Called NAPA while waiting for tow truck. Had the new hose waiting for me upon arrival home.
- replaced upper rad hose
- refilled coolant
All seems good now.
I should head over to the car wash and clean out the engine compartment of coolant but that will have to wait until after my daughter's 4th birthday party.

Finally installed my Koni FSD's and H&R 50464 springs. Also installed the rear Eibach sway bar, but unfortunately did not have time to get the front sway bar installed. First impressions are that it feels very very similar to stock sport suspension, not stiff at all over bumps. It was raining, so I couldn't take any corners really. Plus I still need to align it, I'll probably do that tomorrow after work. I'll try to get some pics uploaded soon. Washed it. Replaced a missing expanding rivet on the radiator. Replaced the collar/bushing things on the valve "beauty covers" on one side, and plastic caps on both sides. Re-glued some peeling back cloth on one C pillar and one A pillar with 3M headliner spray glue. Also stuffed some foam in the one A-pillar trying to kill a cabin noise. And the big accomplishment of the day. Replaced the broken slider bits on one side of my sunroof. Still had one side working. Hopefully this will keep the original working side working longer, and more importantly this should take care of that rattle. If this and the A-pillar foam do the trick the cabin should be noise free again. woo. Until the Billy PSS break something loose again. lol.

Rolled my rear fenders... what a nightmare on the BMW.
Why was it a nightmare? I need to do this to get rid of the sunken look on my rears.

Installed my pre-painted Umnitza M5 front bumper assembly. I also ordered the 4 brake duct pieces and the front "L" shaped wheel liners. I decided to go with the m-sport look, so I also ordered a factory grill and t-bar. Now I just need to get the rear bumper installed and a muffler to exit like the m-sport cars did.
As far as the bumper is concerned, I decided to go with the abs version for a better fit. To my surprise, the front bumper fit pretty much like factory. The wheel wells line up as good as my oem bumper did. I took careful consideration to make sure the metal bumper was centered correctly in the bumper cover. The fogs that were included in the kit work, but the fitment on these could have been a little better. That's my only gripe about the whole setup. I'll probably change them out in the future, but for now they work fine.

I just went out and took a couple quick pics for you (and yes its raining a little, lol). They aren't the best pics, but you can see it lines up pretty damn good. The car was previously wrecked and repaired before I bought it, so that's why there is that slight gap between the fender and bumper. I don't know how bad the damage was, but there is red paint markings on all of the suspension and drive line bolts like it was all out at some point. Either way, for the price, I'm very satisfied with the fitment. I hope the rear install is as nice.
I thought about it after I posted these pics, but looking down the fender at the top corner of the bumper, the bumper is flush with the fender and doesn't stick out further... if that makes any sense to you.

Good to know, thanks for that. Time wont be an issue, it will be coming by boat as shipping by air is just far too much. I am running with an ebay cheapy now so I am just trying to return it to what it was before I had an accident. :)

Oh, don't be so sensitive!
I said nothing about the Black Birch (which is definitely the most coveted of interior trims). Swapping back to the Bruyere trim, in the meantime, seems like dipping your toes into old age.

It's not terrible, but I call my e39 'the grandpa car' on occasion.
I've given serious thought to layering some real wood over the plastic trim (mostly b/c mine is cracked), to basically refinish it. Has anyone else done this?

Sorry but I don't think birch will look good in caramel. There needs to be some sort of either contrast or blending. Bruyere looks good because it blends the black and the caramel by being a dark brown. Brushed aluminum looks good because it offers contrast against both the black and caramel. Birch may not look great because it will blend in slightly to the black dash and not offer the contrast needed imo, especially in the vibrant colored caramel interior.
Personally I don't like Birch too much. Though from what I understand its the same grain as my Muschelehorn, it is however a different stain.

Automatic transmission in my 09/1997 540i decided to break down on me and so I had to source another in good condition. I only had 5th gear and reverse available.
So far so good, feels much stronger than my original one. Fingers crossed it is going to hold. Seems strong so far. Even fuel consumption has improved by about 20-25%. It was down since the last few months I could not understand, O2 sensors, MAF etc were fine.
There was no oil at all in the new gearbox, it was filled with Febi/Bilstein oil, compatible with ESSO LT 71...whatever number is correct for the 5HP24
Had to drive 160 miles to come back home, so far so good.

Last week installed the Bavarian Auto/ Sachs clutch kit and a new slave cylinder. Pulled the flywheel and had it resurfaced. It's been about 30 years since I replaced a clutch in a vehicle myself.
I did find watching Bavarian Auto's two videos beforehand helped gained some insight.
