Sehr schön! The wheels don't match left to right, did you swap?
Can you tell us more about the LPG setup, cost, etc.?

Thanks,

Heh, they're just steelies with hubcaps for the time being, it's what I got the car with. Car came with 3 different kinds of hubcaps, so I scrounged up another pair in my garage so at least the sides would have the same caps... it'll do for the time being.

The LPG Setup...

There's a second fuel tank installed, inside the spare wheel well:

http://abload.de/img/img_0826zvsd7.jpg

It holds aboout 77l of LPG but only 60l of that are useable as the rest is not used to stay in the tank to maintain a minimum level of pressure.

There is a few more parts in the engine bay, mainly a evaporator (lower left corner) which evaporates the liquied gas and from there on it goes onto the injectors (on top of the engine).

http://abload.de/img/img_08249es7t.jpg

The car runs on both LPG and gasoline, I can switch by the press of a button. The car starts on gasoline and when it reaches a certain temperature it switches automatically to LPG, takes about 500 - 1000 meters to warm up the car enough for that, depending on outside temperature.

Compared to gasoline, it uses about 1 liter more per 100km with LPG, but since LPG is so much cheaper that doesn't matter. A liter of gasoline, 95oct is about 1.55€ at the moment - that equals to roughly 8$ per gallon. LPG in comparison is about 0.65€ per liter - that equals to 3.33 $ per gallon.

The conversion nowadays costs between 1500 and 3000€ for a 6 cyl engine. I've got the original bill of sale for mine, it originally cost 2800€.

The filler for the LPG varies depending on kit and personal preference. The p/o had the one for my 5 installed on the rear bumper. If you look closely you can see a small black rectangle on the lower right cornwer.
In the last 15 years LPG has grown quite a bit here in Germany, now you'll find a LPG pump at most major gas stations.

At prices like that...people in America should be exceptionally grateful that we have such cheap fuel in comparison. If only the majority of them knew what people in Europe/UK had to pay!! Mind-blowing!

The rough idle was still perplexing me a bit. Had a few "misfires" on the 4th cylinder, and changed out the ignition coil unit. No change. So...I dug even deeper, and decided to have a look at the DISA valve. I knew instantly there was a problem when I started pulling the unit towards me and it just **STUCK**. Hardly any amount of jiggling, pulling, light-twisting, etc., would make this thing give way. I was able to see just past the orange o-ring, and it had about a 1/16" of a gap to peer through. I had no other choice but to give it a light pry with a screwdriver and heard a light "click." The unit had now budged to about a 1/8" gap -- just enough to see that the bottom of the paddle was broken free of the center piece. With a small hook-tool, I managed to lift it up (caught on the inside of the housing), and pull the unit. Here's what I ended up with (see photo) -->
505309
Fortunately, that damn pin didn't fall out in the process!! I had already purchased an o-ring (good), and whittled-away the old on to replace it. For now, I'll just have to re-install without the paddle, and wait for the rebuild kit to come in.

Rebuilt the valve with the DISA M54 kit from German Auto Solutions http://germanautosolutions.com/bmw_solutions/disa_products/m54_m52tu/m54_disa_repair_kit/product_m54_disa_repair_kit.php Took me about 30-40 minutes TOTAL. Now, this thing really purrs! Best $80 I've spent on my car yet! :)

If leaking near thermostat, a seal has failed and replacement is recommended including a new thermostat. If the overflow tank is continuously leaking at the top, it may not have been blead properly , especially if fluid replacement was recent. If fully blead you may just have a bad cap seal. Caps can be obtained separately.

thx larry, its not near the thermostat it's on top of the overflow tank, I guess I'll get a new cap... I have a spare thermostat btw new and in the box just as a precaution. Gil...OK...sorry, I may have been misleading...I was actually answering two coolant concerns...one poster had leaking near the thermostat..and yours leaking at the top of the expansion tank. I am really sorry to hear the dealers there really (and I mean really!) rip off customers like that. The items you mention are readily available at much lower prices in the USA, of course. I wonder if you can obtain body parts or Sensors and the like from other sources (or even from other countries) at lower prices. I can usually find parts that are not that critical to the operation of my vehicle from sources like eBay and the like at much (much!) lower prices than the dealer. Your situation may be different due to import duties and shipping.

Unfortunately, I still have issues with my Aux... doesnt come on at low speed nor at 104 anymore, but works with the air-con and works if I cross the pins at the rad sensor - so I am gussing rad sensor is stuffed. Larry, because of the prices we have here i dont mind getting the parts from the stealership in US, i go to US every 3 months on a business trip or to visit my child. and every time i go shopping for spares. I dont have problems with duties if i bring the parts unboxed and if they fit on my luggage(i can take 2 75lb luggages). It's a 3rd world country with the most expensive city in the world where you pay up to 2 dollars for a coke and 1 buck for beer(lets all drink beer then lolol)....

Anyways i fixed the leak already, bled the system 2x, it felt like it was clogged, heard a lil loud burp and bubbles start coming out of the overfill tank. Now onto the next one( ball joints)

Think I figured out my vacuum leak / whistle sound...

I figured since I was looking in all the most complicated places why not check something simple and in your face so I was messing around with the air box and the air filter. I noticed It doesnt close fully and seems warped or something since the tabs do not clip into place like they should. I removed the air filter and turned it upside down, the edges of the filter are creased inward so there are gaps on both sides. I closed it back up and went for a test drive, the noise is 90% quieter and doesn't sound like a sad little S/C.

Do you find there's any difference in performance between petrol and LPG?

Some people I have spoken to who own duel fuel cars report that the car feels more powerful when running on LPG due to the higher octane rating. Just as many, however, say that their car feels a bit slower when running on LPG compared to petrol.

I've never seen any concrete evidence either way. It would be interesting to see dyno pulls of the same car running on LPG and petrol.

Yeah, I think just getting the shroud and fan off is the biggest PITA part of this project, honestly. But...that's just the way it goes. It will probably take me about 1.5 hours after that. Got tint on the 99. First time this car has ever had tint, which is strange, considering it was purchased by the original owner, and driven for 7 years in Scottsdale, AZ. Also finished wrapping one side of the "A" pillar in new material. Did headliner a few weeks ago. I suck at headliners. Will probably get it redone.

Replaced the drivers side seat control panel cover. It had a few cracks in it. Managed to get those stupid plastic tab things out without a single one cracking :o
And also did a minor tweak to ride height on one corner. Lowered one corner another 1/4" to get a little more square with regards to chassis height off the ground.
And stuck a little piece of rubber tubing under the door sill molding extending a little past the door weather stripping. Will see if that keeps the water from pooling in the door sill. Drains are clear, vapor barrier is good. Water still pools, gets under the sill molding, and splashes out when I open the door after a car wash or heavy rain...

Decided to look at my spark plug wells, took cover and coils off, left hand bank looking nice and dry, right hand bank got the VCG oil seepage. All spark plug wells had oil, however the two closest to the firewall were quite full, with the last spark plug almost covered in oil as per pic.

<img src="http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=506732"/>

I had the same issue but with the left bank. Snug the bolts slightly past torque... it worked for me.

I used a foam backed sued material. The material is nice, but wouldn't stretch how I wanted it to stretch on the headliner. There are way too many creases, glue marks, and a couple perforations. I truly suck at it. The two A pillars and alarm sensor cover came out perfect so far. Going to work on the rear pillars and maybe see if I can get the headliner done again with my leftover material.

I'll try to get some pics up in the next couple days (as embarrassing as they may be).

Weekend was a blast with plenty of work! Got my parts in from AutohausAZ.com and did the following:

** Belt tensioners for AC and Water pump/Alternator (INA) - (already did the idler a few months ago).
** Serpentine and AC belts (Contitech)
** Valve cover gasket (Victor Reinz)
** Rewired the GROM audio unit's microphone up/into the headliner plate that held the BMW one -- better clarity now.

The tensioner for the WP/ALT was definitely on its last leg. After pulling off...man, those bearings!! YIKES! <rattle-rattle-screech!>:shifty

Ambient temps really dont affect a car as much as many people seem to think

Where I live we regularly see temps in that range, even at night its usually 90-100 lol. What really hurts cars is leaving them outside in that weather. Garage a car when its not being driven and driving it doesnt do much more damage than driving in a cold environment. Cold or heat will both damage cars in different ways.

A minute amount, but the engine running at operating temperature will have a much greater effect then the 100 degree temps of the air running over the car.

Leaving it in the sun and heat all day will cause this stuff to deteriorate quicker, but like I said if the car is garaged and just driven in the heat, its not a huge problem. Cars are tested in desert driving environments where its hotter than anything we will see. A lot of cars are tested in death valley or similar environments. The rubbers and plastics are designed to take the heat. Extreme cold will also make things more brittle, FWIW

The biggest weather related issue I see in Phoenix is every time it rains you see a bunch of cars broken down on the side of the road. I'll give anyone 5 e-points if they know why.

Everyone with older cars runs around with cracked distributor caps, its never an issue when its dry, but when it rains the moisture gets in and they can no longer produce spark, so they just die. Its pretty sweet. It hasnt rained here in many months so I am excited for the first monsoon of this season, so I can go count how many cars are stopped on the side of the road :rofl

Hydrolocking does happen... our city is not really designed for rain, and during monsoon season we get torrential downfalls, some of our roads dip down into a drainage wash and every year during monsoon season the news mentions a few idiots who drove into one of these flooded washes and hydrolocks their car.

My point is that there can't be too many distributor ignition cars on the road today. In the last 15-20 years the majority of cars built are distributor less. Anyway, I'm sure it sucks for those people who have distributors and are stranded but It seems like coil packs have a high failure rate too(for other reasons).

However, I was disappointed when initially installing the Depo because of the brittle clip issue. It pissed me off that I was snapping brand new clips before I had even had a chance to enjoy the new covers.

WTH does "blingy" mean?!? :rofl

Personally, I like the chrome but the aftermarket cheapos I bought years ago have never fit properly. I bought them because I liked the M5 width since I have a ding up front from the po. The wider grill covers it perfectly...

These fit like a glove and are far from "blingy" imo. I actually feel they are a bit darker than I'd hoped...

I replaced the original Hella 7-years ago at 100k because they were so sandblasted. I am impressed the Depo replacements lasted 95k for $99USD.

However, I was disappointed when initially installing the Depo because of the brittle clip issue. It pissed me off that I was snapping brand new clips before I had even had a chance to enjoy the new covers.

This "nameless" brand replacement had MUCH more pliable material allowing me to enjoy a trouble free install. :redspot

I didn't have any problems with the clips. Only noticed that these Depo's where a lot tighter to fit than the original Hella's.

+1...agreed. A rpita to get the little "lips" on the rear mounting plate to sit just right on the "alignment" tabs in the mounting hole. Who the hell came up with such a lame a** engineering slip-up? It took numerous tries until I realized one of the tabs was just ever so slightly bent inwards making it impossible to line up all the "lips' and "tabs". A little love tap with a mallet and I was finally able to complete the install. The grills fit really well for "cheapo" Chinese knock-offs especially when comparing to the other aftermarkets I installed. These did cost $82 vs. $30 though...

I also did the same thing. I found the to be much easier going back on them takign them off. Slip the back piece(verticle grill) from the back and put those little tabs back over edges. Then push the outer edge part of the kidneys back on. The longest part of this project was waiting for the dip to dry.

Sux, cause I was just getting ready to put the little M-Stripes on the grill that I got from another member. Now there is no grill to put them on. :bawl Every time I go one step forward to bringing this car back from "Wifestruction", something happens. Now I need lights, a grill, a hood, a bumper cover, a cover panel for the aux fan, and maybe bumper shocks and a bumper? I guess we'll see. If they total it, I'll never get enough to buy another decent shaped 528i - msport, not to mention all the work and sweat I put into the thing recoloring seats, getting windows tinted last week, buying this and that trying to "unwife" the interior.....

Just replaced the spark plugs on my '03 530i. Was too chicken-$h&@ to torque them per the NGK guide (1/2 - 2/3 rotation once seated), and ended up getting a Craftsman torque wrench (needle) that was on sale. Glad I did though, and it worked beautifully. Everything went well and without a hitch. Car started right up an ran smoothly (idle). I'll take it out a bit later.

Regretfully, I must admit that I had not changed these plugs in 90K miles. Why? Because I dread plug replacements and the risks of majorly screwing something up with an aluminum head (just ask me why) :/ Anyhow, here's a pic of the plugs with at least 90K miles on them. There was old oil leakage into the 6th chamber, but it was old and not since I had just replaced the VCG last week. The VCG is holding up great and without issue.

I'll take it out on the road later to see how it performs. I'm sure I'll be in for a surprise to say the least.

any tricks to getting these out? ive been wanting to do mine for a while because my headliner is peeling off, im afraid of having that airbag explode in my face

Haha the airbags are pretty scary looking. Basically you pop the HPS panel off (if your car has airbags and use a T25 torx to unscrew the screw. Once the screw is out, gently pull on the top of the trim out and downwards and it will pop right off. I did it without pulling the door seal off (you may have to slide the door seal off in the area of the a pillar to make removal easier... Don't pull it completely off as that is unnecessary but sliding it down where the a pillar is makes removal easier) once the trim piece is hanging slide it out. It took me 20 minutes to change both sides.

Putting it back in is a little harder because there is one alignment clip that needs to be lined up. I lifted the airbag so I could peak under it while aligning the plastic clip. Once you get in there you should see what I'm talking about.

One other thing. There was some sort of copper coiled wire that was on my old trim piece that didn't come with the replacement. I'm not sure what it does but I removed it and stuck it in the same place as the old one. And there is a clip for the HPS panel that didn't come on the new one. I removed this and reinstalled it on the new one so the panel would clip on.

My DJ autos broke in several places, so I had to take them apart and epoxy, seal, and otherwise rig them back into working condition. While I was in there, I decided to try out some amber vinyl I had on hand to make the turn signal lens look amber, instead of just the bulb. I felt like the front was too clear on a silver car, so this kind of gets a hint of that oem amber look on the face lifted cars. I really like the way it turned out.

I've got a stereo whine, and I always just thought it was my BSW Soundplicity / DSP adapter or so, but no reason why (unless faulty electronics units or so) as I soldered everything in for the install.

Thanks for the compliments :)

Ironically, the opening in the shroud is exactly 18 inches. So I thought first to use this but had concerns it would be too flimsy:

http://stores.hvacexpress.com/duct-end-cap-no-crimp-18-inch-fc-18/

Then I thought of a cake pan....

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017Z3SWE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This pan is solid, even after cutting it it's very rigid. I'll write up a DIY when I am done

I think I am going to mount the fan opposite as pictured. That will require cutting the lip off the pan and turning the pan around. That way it will put the fan even with the front of the shroud allowing easy access to the belts etc without ever having to remove the shroud ever again.

I was following an old DIY on the other BMW forum. What I didn't like was how the fan was mounted, screws through the shroud with JB weld etc.

auaq

The thing I always talk/finger point/discuss about is the ducting and that is important for your engine's cooling effect/efficiency. You want to have a shroud and a properly sealed ducting or geometry to create that air pressure differential when the electric fan is running. You can't just have an open ducting and just cool 1/3 core of the radiator. You want to be able to dissipate all that engine heat through the radiator's entire core - not 1/3 or 2/3 but 3/3! I see that you did it the right way.

fmzip

Thanks auaq....

I thought the same. I knew it was easy enough to mount but sealing it was key. I saw alot of creative, but not too pretty installs with the likes of RTV foam, sheet metal etc

. JimLev's install was the best I saw (pic below) and is what inspired me to improve on his design. This cake pan indeed makes it a much easier DIY for sure.

I declare this mod to be now called "The Fat Daddio" (name of the cake pan) by fmzip ;)

Already linked in two posts, HOWEVER, you just got LUCKY! I found another seller on eBay offering the same grills MINUS the $25 express shipping fee so if you're willing to wait, they can be bought for around $51... eBay Item #121237984571. My app doesn't provide an address...

Thanks, I emailed that seller and these ones for 51$ are just the standard black center chrome surround grill, black and chrome not chrome black. I'll be buying the 80$ ones. Thanks!

Tinkered with my electric fan install. Decided to reverse the setup for added clearance to belts etc. It's complete, just need to pre-wire the setup and hopefully get it into the car this weekend.

Can you talk more to this, or link about it or so?
I've got a stereo whine, and I always just thought it was my BSW Soundplicity / DSP adapter or so, but no reason why (unless faulty electronics units or so) as I soldered everything in for the install.
I'd love to know if your issue may be my issue, but never have seen anything on this in my minimal searching of the topic.

Initially, I started troubleshooting the electronic noise suppressor but read somewhere that it could be caused by oil fouling the coil. Pulled the vanity covers and the two rear ds coils were soaked in oil. Pulled and cleaned them and the whine disappeared...

It wasn't until a few thousand miles later that I made the decision to snug down all vc bolts to try to stop the leak. This time, there was very little oil fouling and only on the rear ds coil, HOWEVER, from what I can see, the oil leaking has stopped. I will report back after the next inspection. Afaik, SLIGHTLY (fixed by emphasizing) over torquing the vc bolts almost completely corrected the leaky vc issue for me. :cool

Got waved at by a fellow TiAg e39 owner in Stow, MA. If you're on here, hit me up....

Replaced the subframe bushings in the Touring with Meyle HD ones, hoping to eliminate the car's 70mph vibration. Waiting for the emulsion fluid to dry before taking a test-drive. Fingers crossed!

I need to try this (torque down the bolts more) - might give that a go this weekend....as well as clean out cylinder 4 plus some.

...anyone know a good way to clean out excess oil from a plug reservoir? Just shove shop towels down there, or does that create lint where it shouldn't be, and an issue?

Sounds like a great idea until you strip....

I used my oil extractor thing. I have seen someone use a modified turkey baster with a hose attached to the end and also the simpler solution....a shopvac.......

Often wondered if re-torquing the VC bolts would make the leaks better or worse. Keep us posted.

Yes, it is possible to strip the bolts, HOWEVER, if you are careful and only give it less than an eighth of a turn (or even a sixteenth), you should be fine and you won't have to continually monitor and replace the vcg's. I guinea pigged this one for the rest of you because the vcg's were leaking to the point of needing to be replaced...again! At this point, it appears that I won't be tearing apart the top end just to deal with this rather annoying issue. I absofinlutely HATE oil leaks, especially when they are flooding my plug wells and coils...:shifty:

I used a large long handled screwdriver and some shop paper towels to "mop" out the oil and long needle nosed pliers to retrieve the oil soaked "rag". It leaves the area clean and MUCH drier imo. At one point I tried cotton balls, which worked ok but not as well as the paper trick. The vac trick leaves too much oil behind from my experience but it is a quick fix if there is an abundance of the stuff. Then I would still finish off using the shop towel method...just my 2¢.

Yup...a thing of beauty. After seeing how great it looks, I may actually try this mod, especially since my fan clutch is now suspect.

LOL! Sorry, but neither. I dont think I'll be going from one 540 to another, (plus I think I have lower miles then yours) lol.
I have my eyes set on a blk on blk 2002 e39 M5 with 70K miles. Seller is asking for $12,800.
But it all depends on me being about to sell my 540 first.

I had a very intermittent sticking caliper that impacted me 2 days out of the last ~3 weeks. First I tried just cleaning and lubing the guide pins. It did not help. I got a reman'd caliper from AutoZone yesterday for $66 + core ( more than getting it online, but I needed it sooner than later ) and installed last night. The one from AutoZone was BMW and Ate stamped. Seems to be working. I painted it. But it seemed that all the paint came off as I spun it on to the brake line. At least my gloves were very very silver.. So I will probably clean/respray it when I get a chance. I drove it around. Did some heavy braking. Nothing popped loose or seized up.
