I got it off a forum member for $375. Unfortunately, two pieces were damaged from the accident the car was in so I had to buy two new pieces for $140. He reimbursed me $90 (as he didn't notice they were bent when he sent them?), so it stands me $425.

I am still happy with the purchase as I had a good amount of the car resprayed (front nose & rear bumper) and the car is jet black. The gloss trim was needed in a big way.

I installed an E46 M3 3 spoke steering wheel in my 540i yesterday. feels so much better than the original 4 spoke heated wheel! Still debating if I'm going to hold onto my old wheel for the colder winter months or sell it.

I also recently installed an E60 short shifter along with the ZHP knob. I am loving the crisp and short throws!! next up is a complete suspension overhaul (control arms/bushings & ST coilovers) along with new brake rotors and pads. I'm also gathering the parts to tackle the timing chain guides, valley pan & cooling system overhaul job. I even snagged a non vanos intake manifold for cheap on eBay!!

well, you don't really want to wait until signs of overheating show up... because then you would have overheated! LOL

fortunately, the M54 motors t-stat usually fail open, instead of closed and you'll get a fault code for that so it's fairly obvious. water pump wise, look for white residue around the plane of the fan. when the water pump bearing starts to go, you'll get drips of coolant coming out of the weep hole. these drips then can flung around by the fan and dry white, so you'll see this white spots around the plane of the fan, usually on the side of the air box or on the coolant expansion reservoir. if you see that, 99% of the time it means water pumps is getting ready to go.

it is usually good practice "preventative maintenance" to get the entire cooling system replaced around 80K-100K miles. i usually plan to do it at the 2nd inspection-I or inspection-II service.

Yesterday I repaired both adjusters in both headlights, 2003 Xenons, which are the welded shut housings. I stripped all of the external parts for cleaning. Rubber parts were washed in soap and water and treated with Griot's Vinyl & Rubber Dressing.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3710/9199213261_8a01f917d2_o.jpg

The long adjuster I was able to remove and replace from the existing holes in the housing. With a long extension and a Torx 15 I removed the socket for the adjuster ball. It's important to use a little lubrication, I use Super Lube Synthetic Grease, on the plastic ball and the hole in the adjuster in which new threads will be cut. I also lubricated the black and white toothed adjuster knobs.

There's absolutely no access to the short adjuster from the back of the housing, so I cut an access port with a soldering gun. Don't cut too deeply and use a thin knife to pry out the door.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7381/9201993992_8ce1448431_o.jpg

Here's the broken short adjuster. I remove the old part by turning the adjuster full to the left. The screw for the socket has a Torx 15 head and can be reached with a 5" long driver through the socket for the angel eye light just to the left.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3813/9199214013_14ef172996_o.jpg

Here you can see that one of optic fiber cables has lost part of its black plastic sheath, exposing the fibers. I just worked carefully around the damage. Scape away the melted bits of plastic around the access door.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3767/9199214489_eecb9ff6e7_o.jpg

All done. Instead of gluing or using gasket-maker on the access door, I just taped it up with electricians tape. This will be handy if I ever need to fix the adjuster again.

Installed a set of horns. I can finally be heard. Out of the original set only one operated have as loud as it should. Kind of embarrassing. Even my wife would laugh. Now I get respect with 2 - 115 DB Euro horns.

While I had the fender liner off noticed the plastics brake duct slid back onto the aluminum onea so corrected that with two well placed self tapping screws.

Figured out way to fix the little trim strip under the lights that gets the end taken off at the headlights any the wheels. Drilled a small hole, insert nut inside trim piece and threaded a small Machine screw through hole to catch a nut. Screw enough so that head will catch fender where the plastic part used to be. Did one a month ago and now the other one works great you can't see the screw head once its done.

Yesterday had the Dinan stage 5 Ecu flash installed. Works great and my CELs are gone.

Fortunately, it was only a few miles from our house in the parking lot of a grocery store so at least I wouldn't die of starvation, LOL!. Luckily, daughter was home so she and wife took the groceries home. Wife came back, we stopped at house for tools and off to AutoZone. Unfortunately, I didn't bother to note any battery specifics....hey, they're the experts so they should know, right? No....they weren't sure so it was back to the car to remove the battery.....some strange looks from people as I pull the battery out of the trunk (no, lady, I did not 'mod' the car!) and back to AutoZone. Noticed the battery, BMW brand, was dated 06/06 so it lasted a good while. Purchased the Duralast 'platinum' battery, back to car and the car started fine. Did have to reset the date and clock and my little world is back in balance again.

4300k HID's in the fogs. Had them laying around and thought about installing them for a while. Finally got off my butt to see about installing them and it was a pretty easy, straightforward install. I'll probably swap bulbs to 2500/3000k at some point.

You might want to get the 6watt ones. The 3 watts don't really show in the day time.

I thought of getting the clear but I decided against it. Rather repaint it every five years.

I don't typically have my lights on during the day so 3 watts looks perfect at night to me.

Replaced the cracked and crumbling windshield trim. I think the key is to use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover 08984 (https://www.google.com/search?q=3m+general+purpose+adhesive+remover&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) to clean out the groove. It dissolves any sticky leftover rubber or window weld, but doesn't attack the paint or clearcoat.
Thanks especially to "Viv" in Roadfly for a well-written procedure (http://forum.roadfly.com/threads/12902318-Replacing-windshield-moulding) and the tip to measure and mark the center of the roof and the center of the top piece of the trim; line it up in the center first, press the trim home there, then to either side and it will fit in the corners and down the sides perfectly.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5322/9264447489_e398d07551_o.jpg

Mask off with paper to keep the little bits of rubber out of the windshield wipers and engine.
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5329/9267221720_03260e68ac_o.jpg

Use only plastic tools. These trim tools from Harbor Freight work perfectly. Fold a doubled piece of paper towel over them, soak in the 3M remover and swipe the groove clean.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3801/9267222370_bc7f159035_o.jpg

A fast and satisfying repair. Done in an hour.

Lower tensioner. The old one had 99,850 miles and when compared to the new Rebi unit had 1/2 inch less height. Put the new unit in and started it up. Yep. $318 from ECS tuning, including the gasket, but not including the little rubber grommets for the bolts. The old cover doesn't look too deformed, but the new one seems to have fixed the problem. I did the job first with a victor reinz gasket, it leaked, then i re-did it with an OEM bmw gasket. That also leaked, now this! After ~200 miles, so far so good.

On friday my ABS inboard mid hose blew out on me again. Replaced it with a new one from the BMW dealer this time instead of used. While another mechanic was bent over looking at the hose, he leaned on top of the radiator and broke the nozzle that comes up from the left side of the tank. Radiator fluid started spewing everywhere and he goes "Looks like you got a coolant leak too" as he turns around and walks away. I was floored thinking that now I had to replace the brake line AND buy a new radiator. One of the more experienced mechanics came, popped the old one out, and snapped a new one back in place. I was happy. Brake line replaced, system bleed, radiator fixed and weekend saved. Thank Jebus.

Someone ended up backing into my bumper/hood while trying to park last week. Getting the paper work ready (and the 500 dollars) to file to get everything repaired.

^ That is a GD stupid place for a starter. Who thought that one up?

Me, I bought a fuel pump today. I hope I don't blow myself up when I'm swapping it out.

I'd like to blame the longitudinal engine, but part of me knows better... I can't explain it.

Use a brass chisel and hammer to avoid sparks. A little bit more peace of mind.

the e39 has made my week a living hell. I ordered a new one of these as well. The vent fitting on mine cracked and made a huge mess out of the engine bay. Noticed the temperature gauge spiking and hopefully caught it before any serious damage. Now i have to take time out of my day tomorrow to swap it in.

yeah mine went out on the top of a mountain with no cell reception and i basically had to coast down and stop every few minutes to let it cool off. i even had the whole car off and coasted at one point with manual steering and brakes. then i had it towed 70 miles to home. worst E39 experience i've had so far

Installed a dependable 2x4 in place of the unreliable window regulators.

I just (2 weeks ago) fixed one of mine with a 24$ regulator off ebay (w/out motor). It was real easy and works great now.

I also put in a fouler on the rear O2's to get the P0430 code to go away - so far so good.

Just got mine out of the local Indie shop....Dropped it off to check out a auto trans leak. I thought it was the pan gasket. He found that it is leaking at something he called input shaft seal. He says it is a very slight trickle and would be expensive to fix. Based on my mileage and all, I think I will just leave it alone and just check fluid periodically. The leak right now is that slow.

My mechanic did tell me that my oil separator was leaking and needed to be replaced. He charged me parts and labor 498 bucks to to the work. He said mine was completely clogged. I was planning to do the job myself this fall, but now its done. I also need a DISA valve. I think I will do that one myself. It does not look too complicated. Has anyone used this valve in their car?

Also tightened a loose power steering fitting underneath the car that was making a mess.

Starts tomorrow early, Myrtle Beach SC to Standish ME to visit friends and family, 990 miles each way.
We're taking Rt 17 up the coast and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to avoid I-95, then on up the Eastern Shore to New Jersey.

First real run in the 540iT M-Sport which I got in April. Should be fun.

About to start modding my poor old stock E39 540i(A), sad it is an auto but I love it...

Bought it mint 4 years ago from a guy who used to polish his garage floor, I mean sparkling was his floor

In lovely NYC the yellow maggot taxi riders have left little dings and a tree clobbered the back tail during Sandy... same tree killed the car behind mine and another tree killed the car ahead but my beast was left with a only 4 inch love tap dent which I have lazily left there for 9 months.. time to fix it....

Will be supercharging with the VF Stage 1 later this year, new exhaust etc, then brakes, suspension..

Will post after Oct once mods started

d1984
08-05-2013, 06:44 PM
installed a new nissen radiator and bled coolant. runs steady at 106 C so far. will bleed again tomorrow.

TIP FOR THOSE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DO THIS:

The lower radiator hose is almost IMPOSSIBLE to disconnect from the radiator end while the radiator is still in the car. It's on there pretty damn good because of the way the coupling is designed and no amount of up and down wiggling did the trick for me. I've heard some people spray PB blaster and then tap it, but I didn't have anything like that on hand (I know I know) and plus it still sounded like it would be pain based on my reading. What I did was disconnected the hose from the water pump end first. You can gently pry around the "top" (where the spring clamp is) and "bottom" (opposite side of the spring clamp) of the coupling with a small thin flathead screwdriver, then some up and down wiggling in relation to the spring clamp will free it pretty easily. Then remove the radiator with the lower hose still attached, which will take like 10 minutes of maneuvering and squeezing through things to get it all out of there. But once the radiator was out with the hose still attached I had a lot more ways to get leverage. I ended up just sandwiching the radiator between my legs and doing it like that, pretty easily removed the hose. Remember wiggle up and down where the spring clamp is up and the opposite side is down, otherwise it will never come off.

Oh also remove your fan/fan clutch for more clearance. I've heard of people doing it with it still on there but it takes 30 seconds to remove if you have the wrench and counter holder and makes the job way easier. I also took off my airbox and intake tube all the way up to the throttle body for more clearance. Also as a side note, my Nissen radiator came with the plastic support brackets for the fan shroud, drain plug installed, and hose o rings.

Took me almost 3 hours just because I spent a bunch of time messing around with that lower radiator hose until I decided to remove the radiator with it attached, plus I took my time bleeding the system.
