Replaced my cruise control actuator because of broken teeth on the gear inside. I bought one off the forums here for $75 it works great and was super easy to install. I'm finally cruisin. Also allowed me to get into unreachable spots in my engine bay to clean.

the tires are 'legal', but they are summer tires which proves useless.
the abs modules are getting sent out as soon as my job stops scheduling me right after school every day.
the driving itself wasnt too much of an issue, except the whole 'what if ______,' but the getting going was tough.
throttle control was learned quickly, and threshold braking in the snow doesnt work too well.

Now you need to acquire that MKIV. ;)
I also just ordered these:

It's remarkable what difference they make for the interior. These will complement my soon-to-be brushed aluminum trim like nothing else.

Yup...that is why they are called "Summer" tires cause they don't do well in winter conditions. :D Especially when the Summer tires are bald! :shifty
I see you are young so I didn't mean to spank you but this is a safety issue for you and others. Get the right tires for the season and it really doesn't matter if the ABS module is fixed or not because cars CAN be driven without all that convenient technology but with the proper tires for the conditions. I drove for many years without ABS and I never was the cause of an accident, only the victim. Now you know why I'm requesting (asking, telling, demanding :devillook) you get the proper tires...
Peace and be safe out there this winter. :cool

I know but thanks for clarifying. :cool
I'm getting an "unknown" code...from the DME/DDE 4.0 "122D not defined" so that will be fun to figure out as well. I just modified the 20-pin diagnostic cable adapter yesterday and ran the INPA/EDIABAS diagnostics without a flaw. :redspot
Unfortunately (or fortunately), I now know that I have a few deep codes stored in memory and will have to repair one at a time until I am trouble free (if that is possible with the e39 :rofl)...

I "Glossified" the kidney grills. They were already flat black, but in order to utilize Plast-Dip's Glossifier, you need to have a base consisting of something Plasti-Dip'd. After five or six coats of the Glossfier though, I wasn't getting the glossy look I wanted so I let it dry overnight and this morning added a couple of coats of Duplicolor clear coat on top of the Glossifier layers. The end result is pleasing:

My hood release cable was broken at the handle, so I pulled my panels off down there, stripped the tube that the cable runs through to expose some of the actual cable, and was able to open the hood that way. Still waiting for the new one to come in.
The whole purpose of popping my hood was to bleed my coolant system since I had a heater hose leak that caused air bubbles. Did that, but I think I need to do it again with the coolant circulating through the heater core once I replace the leaky hoses. Still waiting for those to come in the mail.
Also got these guys in the mail today. I'll pop them in tonight.

Pulled the wheel speed sensors on my 2000 540iA with 175k on the clock because of this:
Single diagnosis ABS / ASC — Status: ERROR
Module info : ABS / ASC / DSC
Version : Bosch ABS S
BMW Part Nr. : 6 75 57 41
Hardware Nr. : 54
Software Nr. : 3.13
Diagnose index: 16
Code index : 10
Bus index : 60
Production Date: 28/00
absi . dxt
97 ASC Intake valve
7 Front left speed sensor faulty OR ABS—inlet valve
6 Front right speed sensor faulty OR ABS—inlet valve
— Single diagnosis completed !
but after careful inspection and cleaning with electrical cleaner and compressed air, I still get the same error code even though I used the recommended contact grease. I'm going to uninstall the software (getting some strange behavior when trying to accomplish critical tasks), re-install and then run some diagnostics again. I'm still not sure what the "ASC Intake valve" or "ABS--inlet valve" have to do with the error so any input from experience will be welcome. And the research continues...:help

No such term as "short fuse it". I'm an electronics electrician and that term means nothing. Don't know that outside temp. sensor is even fused. If it reads -40c then sensor is bad or usually you have scraped curb and sensor has gotten messed up. Check simple two wires to sensor and/or replace sensor (cheap-can get at Autozone like $13). If sensor keeps reading -40c your auto heat/ AC will never work correctly as ECU thinks it is cold as hell outside. Short fuse might mean jumper blown fuse, but don't think sensor is fused or at least NEVER heard of sensor blowing a fuse. Wiring or sensor thats it. And there is no "reset" Try to use terms that people can relate to so they can help you. :-)

I did kinda of an arse backwards thing. I had to remove my DINAN muffler to install the M-Sport / M5 bumper. I then went and had a 3" Dual exhaust set up built which looked great. Well, yesterday I installed the BMW OEM M-Sport Single outlet Bumper insert or Diffuser for short. I soon found out that the outlet on the M-Sport is smaller than the M5 and position similar to the regular 540i.:mad
So... I had to push it hard sideways to get the bumper on. Now, because the exhaust has no room to move in the back, it is rattling hard under the driver's bloody seat. Time to bust out the Dremel. :rolleyes

Today I changed out the fan clutch without having to remove the shroud (my car currently has to underpanel, so I just snaked the fan through the bottom) and gave her her first oil/filter change. Oil looked to be in good shape after 8K miles! Always a good feeling after not having seen it. (Purchased the car about 3 months ago.)
Drives like I always hoped it would without that stupid fan clutch locking up 100% during ridiculous conditions like driving on the highway at 80mph on a 40F day! Original fan clutch was on the car with a 1999 manufacture date, so I guess it served its purpose considering it was not TOTALLY locked up.... just most of the time :nono
Throttle response is so much better now and the car actually PULLS over 3K RPM instead of fighting the stupid mechanical fan.
I also measured the minor coolant loss/consumption that is going on and observed it to be about 1 quart per 3,000 miles, then observed what is possibly an external coolant leak somewhere on the drivers side of the block and onto the rack. This could be an external head gasket leak, but I am already aware of possible problems in this area and intend to start saving to have the top end rebuilt. Motor has 186K miles on it and does not consume any oil. I think a generous estimate might be something like 1/2 quart over 8K miles? :eyecrazy: What I am most happy about with regards to this is that the engine is not consuming absurd amounts of coolant, ie the head gasket is not completely shot. This will give me some time to observe the motor and plan what my next move will be in the next year or so.
All in all a pretty good day, drove the piss out of her and nothing exploded... lord knows it sounded like it would before I changed the fan clutch! wwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrirrrrrrrrrIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR OH GOD NO

Damn, my bad for not excusing difference in terminology. James gave you VG info. -40 is the "signal". Either correct, close to correct, or -40.
To Ken Ryan- You made a great choice in tires. I love mine. Only minor, minor, issue. They appear to wear a little quicker than great wear rating indicates, but it is tread pattern. Measurements will show more "thousandths" than you might think by looking at them.
Don't be too dissapointed in burnout. I had Michelin PS-2s which (admittedly started by a brake torque) layed two strips from my 540 about 150' long on fresh asphalt acting like a child, but was getting rid of at 2/10ths tread. Surprised by 2 stripes rather than one. Tried with extreme contacts and w/o brake assist, 20-30 feet was it with fresh tread, cool weather, and I was hoping no one saw me. It was on our private driveway about 4 blocks long so neighbors would see my childishness act of glee!

clunk noise mystery solved
I have my car now 8 years I still love it and I still get lot of complements from lot of people, I still didn't get a taste of the new E60. but the car comes with lot of problems some of them can be repaired and some we don't know what the real cause of it , and just to mention few : the vacuum leak and the annoying clunk noise. I did every possible things to solve the problem . so 2 weeks ago after my Koni sports were shut for the second time I went with belstien HD with new strut mounts and new seals. the clunk didn't go away'
I also had a project in mind to get ready for winter, while I was searching the forum for an upgrade to our cheap looking wipers, I came across an English forum, where this guy is retrofiting the wiper arms from E60 to E39. so I went ahead with completing the project. I had a problem removing the passenger wiper arm and while I was there I thought about the clunk sound so I made sure all the nuts are tied . after driving the car for 2 days the clunk is gone and now it make a sense since the sound is coming from the driver side top of the dash, and that's where the motor of the wipers is. mystery solved at least for me. try it and report. please.
now I have to deal with the dropping of my MPG. I changed everything but DISA although I checked it and it's holding pressure.
vanos seals were done
car was smoked
vacuum lines were changed
o2's, cooling system. maf was cleaned......
pictures of my new wipers, what do you think?

Yeah it sounds a lot better I have my box pushed right up to the hole. You get a lot less vibrational bass. If you have a sub in your trunk without a ski hatch its pretty much closed off to the cabin.

BTW, you must remember to remove the expansion rivets or the clamshell won't come off. Also note that it requires a T-27 to remove the switch and NOT a T-25 as stated in the DIY. I hope this info is helpful...:cool

[QUOTE="larrym3711"]Remember most people consider BMW's as premium cars meant for high speed, and I think the cops do too. Simply put you are more likely to be observed (by most everyone, not just cops). Most are just curious or envious of premium vehicles, but cops know such a vehicle is likely to exceed posted road conditions....hence the impression you are being watched, because you are! EDIT to add story: Once I was cruising through traffic with my lights on (for safety) and pulled up on a CHP rolling slow and stealthy in the far right. I had noticed him because I'm always on full alert and eased up way before zipping past him (only 5 over). Paying attention as usual, I noticed he pulled to the side so I kept moving through traffic at a more reasonable pace when I suddenly saw him in my rear view blazing up behind me in the left. My heart sank as I began to move over to hopefully let him pass and when he pulled alongside, matched my speed, caught my attention, smiled and kind of wagged his finger at me, I guessed he had seen me moving fast through traffic and wanted to let me know how obvious it is. He proved that there are still cops out there that do NOT have authority complexes as it was very civil of him not to pull me over and issue me a ticket for speeding...

You don't know slow until you've driven a car with 92hp. Even my 528 is far from the slowest car I've driven, or even most "slow cars". You'll live :)

Went to AWRS and had my alloy (factory #66) wheel straightened. It was out of round by 90/1000 inches, definitely out factory tolerance spec. It was put in a machine and corrected to very small error and well below the allowed factory limit. AWRS remounted the tire and rebalanced the tire with a precision road force balancer. Great job! And they did not scratch the rim at all. I'll bet many of you think that front vibration is worn front arms and /or bushings. Before you replace all those parts be sure your wheels are true and your tires are "round" and we'll balanced. You may be surprised!

Those of you wondering "what did it cost to have AWRS correct my out of round wheel condition". The answer is $150. Sound high? Maybe, but I can tell you they have the equipment on site to do the work, takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, they remount the tire and balance it with a road-force balancer. No scratches..ready to go! and well balanced.

i disagree about the open diff vs lsd losing control comment.
with an open differential, the power can and will shift from wheel to wheel at an instant making the car VERY unstable at any speed. this leads to unpredictable which leads to...
lsd's keep power to both wheels somewhat equally, at least within margin. if one wheel slips, the other will somewhat take over, and if they are both over the limit, they are doing the same thing making it predictable, and correctable.

Having experienced both, you are more likely to spin a LSD than a open diff, when an LSD looses traction, it losses it on both wheels, while on a open diff it's only in 1 wheel keeping the other stable. not even forcing it have I been able to spin out my car. I have however spun out a LSD equipped car.

I bought a new one!
My 2000 528iT auto was t-boned a couple of weeks ago. (Kids, don't text and drive). Scared me good, lots of airbag action, but came out unhurt.
USAA gave me $6600- I paid $7000 two years ago, so not bad.
Picked up a 2000 528i5sp sport. Much nicer car, lower miles (101k), didn't have to spend much out-of-pocket.
But I think I need to find a general module- key remote and interior lights not working.
Saving for cooling system, natch.
Thanks to everybody on this forum for making ownership possible, and fun- if I didn't do-it-myself, I couldn't afford such a ride. I've learned so much in the last couple of years here... :worship:
