I just put on a set of E39 AR1s on my E34 and they look awesome...but I need spacers for the front because it hits the strut. Now I know Im going to need a spacer that is hub centric...My question is, when I look for one..how big does the center bore of the spacer have to be to fit these wheel properly with out shakes and rattles?? Any input will be appreciated.. Thanks in advance.

I don't know what size, but you need rings for the back to avoid vibrations.

when you order the spacers.. they should be 72mm (its 72.xx, but i forget the exact #). you will still need to get 4 hub rings.

You need 72.56mm hubs on those spacers or you will definately get the shakes from 45-55mph.

Get spacers that have a 72.56mm hub and then buy hub centric rings for those spacers, that way you are not stuck with just e39 wheels.

Bah. I bought hubcentric rings for my well balanced E39 wheels and they still shake... (stock wheels do not cause shaking.)

How thick of a spacer do you need? If it's too thin there may not be enoigh "meat" to machine an inside bore of 72.56 and and outside of 74.1... your only talking 1.5mm

Im getting a set of 5mm hub centric spacers from ebay..they have a few different types but I found a good set..The wheels that I had on before barely cleared the front struts and they were 16x8 now I have 17x9..so Im getting the 5mm spacers for the front..BUT when I put those spacers on its going to throw off the alignment with the back wheels SO ive decided to get all 4 spacers and call it a day.

It was said before, but just to be clear you need more than just spacers. Hubcentric spacers still won't keep the vibrations away. You also need hubcentric rings to reduce the oversized E39 center bore to E34 specs. Yes they're small, and yes they're needed.

I thought the term "hub centric spacers" mean that the rings are built in to the spacers???..or am I mistaken..What if I just get spacers that are the same size as my E34 hub??..do I need the rings for this as well??..im just trying to figure this out

yes.. the hubcentric spacers are basically going to extend the hub out. if you have e39 wheels, you'll still need hubcentric rings.

You do NOT want to buy spacers that convert the hub size to the larger E39 hub size or you'll be stuck if you ever want to change your wheels. Just get the proper hubcentric spacer (which will the leave the hub size identical) and then get the proper hubcentric rings to put into the inside of each wheel. Easy peasy.

Reading over this thread I got confused. As possibly anyone else is about rings vs spacers.
All you need is a ring of metal that slips into the wheel/over where it will be going that increases the diameter of the bore from 72.56mm to 74.1mm This will ensure that the wheel sits flush and won't cause any vibration issues at least as far as the physical connection to the car is concerned.

Just to be clear so you completely understand this whole thing. You need to order hubcentic spacers with a inside and outside hub size of 72.56. 72.56 is the most widely used BMW hub size so finding rims in this size is much easier. Since you are running E39 hub wheels or 74.1, you will also need to run a hub ring so that you don't get play between that wheel and the spacer. With this set-up, if you ever get tired of the E39 wheels you can simply remove the hub rings and wheels, and shop for a wide range of BMW specific rims in the 72.56 hub size. Just thought I would clearify due to all the confusion.

He needs a spacer for that. The rings will only solve his vibration issues.
