Help, I can not get the codes to read

My check engine light is on and I want to read the codes. What am i doing wrong. Turn the key to the on position -all lights on instrument cluster light up, floor gas pedal to kick down swith 5 times with in 5 sec, if it fails try faster, if it fails try slower, if it fails, try aging,...am I flooding the engine? anyhow, I finally got the check light to beging blinking, but I get no codes. What am I looking for? I was expecting to see numbers on the LCD display on the instrument cluster...but nothing showed...just the check light blinking.

thats what it does.. when the lights blink after stomping count the blinks.. each blink should b followed by a pause... search helps alot
