Had fun attempting to drive the rest of the way to work today when one of my belts went on the highway. Saw smoke, smelled rubber... then my power steering went, possibly alternator went (got a batt icon on dash) and water pump went (engine started overheating).

Anyways, appears that my engine fan decided to unthread itself and fall off.. one of the fins looks like got snagged on the belt which started the whole mess.

So, it's the outside most serpentine belt that i'm looking to replace. The smaller one closer to the engine is fine. All i'm looking for is a resource on how to route it and what units are the tensioners. Google brought up all m50 stuff and e39.

And if anyone wants to spend some extra time with me, im on pelican parts (i do most of my shopping there) and cant figure out exactly what that belt would be called!

Did you use realoem and the bentley?

Go to realoem.com and see if they have the belt part-numbers on there then search the number on pelican.

And search in the forum specific, in this forum for "E34 literature" In there there is a link to an online bentley manual.

Hoping you do a writeup on thise:D:D

Try this link, shows diagram and photo of both the drive belt paths. Although the diagram looks wrong to me (wrong engine), the photos are ok.

beautiful, thanks. i couldnt remember realoem.com address.

In this image I cant seem to visualize what the belt goes around exactly.. i'm sure i can figure it out when i go look at my car later but the title of this belt says "alternator / water pump" belt drive. Does this include any component of the power steering? Because my power steering went out once the belt got murdered.

It for E38 740i, but the process and the belt routing is the same. You don't even have to remove fan belt. And yes, it also operates the p/s pump belt.
I would replace the other belt at the same time since it's cheap insurance.
Also, check the condition of the water pump bearing, alternator and p/s pump pulleys. My 540i had a bad water pump and it shredded my serpentine belt

Thanks guys. This page (http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/119957) as posted by speedsterbek worked the best. the tensioner's bolts were in different locations but the idea is exactly the same. Got my new fan and belt on now!
