View Full Version : is there a way to bypass the power steering?

I think I'd prefer to have my car with non assisted steering. Is there an easy/easily reversable way to do this?

Usually vehicles with power steering have a different steering ratio to their non-power counterparts. Unless you removed the pump and changed out the steering box to one with the lower (numerically higher) ratio, steering an E34 with just the power steering pump removed would be a total bitch.

Personal experience: I had an '83 Buick Park Avenue and the power steering belt broke while making a turn. It took both hands and all my strength to steer it around that corner.

Run a shorter belt. Have the belt rap around the crank pulley, alt, and water pump. Done.

Theres a belt you can run thats shorter to not going around the P/S, I did it, its unbearable. It lasted like 2 days before I put P/S back in. That was on 4" wide tires too.

You can loop the lines to bypass the pump - this makes steering easier than just removing the belt. Not sure how easy this is on an e34 though.

When you just remove the belt- you're fighting to move fluid through the system, when you bypass the pump, and just loop the lines at the rack the fluid moves around with less resistance - but still more difficult than a car with a 'from the factory' manual rack as mentioned above.

There are also usually ways to dissassemble the rack, and remove some restrictions withing the rack, and repack with grease- making it even a little more bearable - but I wouldn't do it on a non-track car.

^^ E34's don't have racks.

You do NOT want this. Trust me. The car will be virtually undriveable.

I had to drive my car about a mile from where I pulled over with no p/s. My waterpump went and threw the belts. Its unbearable to drive it like that

you know when you hit a puddle around a corner in the rain and you lose almost all ability to turn the wheel for a split second?
imagine that all the time :(

Really bad idea.

Borrow my truck for a couple of days and see how you like factory non-assisted steering on 3" skinnies with at least 2* of positive camber up front.

If you want heavier steering without it being unusuable, get a Servotronic box. If my 535i doesn't sell whole I can sell you its 87k mile Servo box.

running your pump slower with a larger pulley will give you heavier steering if that's what your after

ok, that's what I was looking for, heavier steering. So I know the servo upgrade is possible since I have experienced it but has anyone ran a larger pulley or know where to source one to try it?

Bumpity Bump. Anybody have some information on running a larger PS pulley?
