What do you do if your heated seat element doesn't work? I've been told that BMW does not sell a replacement element for the non-sport or comfort seat. Back heat works, but butt heat doesn't.

I would take the one from the passenger seat lol
Or wait for someone parting out an E39 and trying to gobble that part up - but most likely they will only be sold w/ seats. Have you tried Pelicanparts or other OEM distributors? Seems possible that they may have ordered a bunch when they were still available and may still have some available. If not, dont know what to tell you - if the part isnt for sale, its not for sale

So they still carry the sport seat element? I can't imagine it would be that different.

Seat mats are part of the seat cover and they are expensive. You are lucky, they sometimes catch fire and burn holes thru the seat and occupant.

Yes, the sport seat element is still available, it's part number 52108253115
back rest is same with 116
The difference is the sport seat one has a thick wire that connects the extendable bolster heating element... with a non sport seat, that wire would be right on the seat.
