Hi all,
I'm working on an M62 project for an E34 Touring, and have a few options regarding the alternator:
1. 140A one from the E34; as far as I can tell it's original with 208k and 15 years on it.
2. 120A one from the M62, also seemingly original with 156k and 11 years.
3. Can I retrofit the M62TU water-cooled alternator without too much headache? Just wrt. to the increased (or decreased?) reliability and not the installation work itself, is this desirable?
4. Is there some aftermarket heavy-duty/high-output one readily available? I'm not running a crazy sound system, but higher capacity, efficiency, or durability is never a bad thing.
Ordinarily, my inclination would be to leave it alone, but reliability is more a concern with this project than usual, and the alternator looks to be a royal pain to replace once the engine's in.
Thoughts?
