winter tire recommendation for 335i Hi, guys:

I live in Chicago and RWD is a big cons in the the winter here. I plan to get a set of winter tire for my 2007 335i (http://www.bimmerwerkz.com/forum/#). What kind of tire you guy recommend?

Thanks a lot!

What's your budget for tires?

Have you considered winter rims also? Mounting and dismounting can damage your wheels if whom ever does it is a moron (like the folks I went to last year).

Do you want to go winter with Run flats or without?

thanks for your quick reply.

I think my budget should be less than $1.5K, is it enough to cover a moderate set of winter tire and rims?

I do want a new set of wheels for the winter tires (the stock wheel is sliver cover and the brake dust always makes it gray. I may want a set of black rims.)

As to run flat or not. what's your suggestion? Actually I really hate BMW's run flat, which costs more and gives you less performance. However since there is no spare tire with 335, it is kind of risky to no go run flat. What's your suggestion?

In the winter, it is not performance you should be worried about. Do you really want to be stranded on the side of the road in the snow and cold with a flat tire? You should be able to get a set of decent 17" aftermarket rims with winter RFT rubber on them for that price. Check out tirerack.com.

Oh, you can do very well at Tire Rack for less than that. I got a set just this week: 4 MSW Black 18" rims (close out at $99 each) 4 Dunlop Winter Sport 3Ds (I'm not sweating the lack of Run Flats) and a new set of TPMs installed and balanced for less than that from Tire Rack.

Best,

Thanks for the info. My 335i comes with 17 inches tires and rims. What's your suggestion of getting a set 18" snow tires and rims?

thanks a lot!

My adivce is don't go to 18 in the winter. Not only do the rims and tires cost more, but since snow driving requires narrower tires (highly advisable), you'll end up with lower profiles that are more susceptible to damage from pothole that are aplenty in the winter months.
