Is it possible to get flip keys for our cars?? I'm still new to the BMW area and was wondering.
Thanks in advance!

I figured VW was the only one, I think some Mercedes came with them too.

when i was doing my research (10 months worth and it still wasn't enough) for my first car, i liked the audi keys so much. you can buy switchblade audi and vw blanks on ebay. i went to a key place and asked them if they could take my extra key, and somehow mate it to the audi switchblade.

the guy looked at me like i was crazy and i never had it done i'm sure with the right tools and time and patience you could do it, or find a place that will do it for you.. just check ebay for "audi switchblade key blanks" i think they run about 50 bucks

try to get your keyless entry in there too, taht would be dope

audi abviously makes them to (VW) but unless you know how these keys are made and ahve aboth your key and a VW or Audi key......I dont think it can be done. But if you know how to change the chips in the keys, and how to cut your BMW properly and than well and grind that same end onto the flip part of a vw key, well I'd like to see some one try that......but I think the bimmer key is longer anyways......

Audi's and Porsche's also have those keys. The new cayenne's flip key is shaped as the cayenne itself with very distinctive hood, headlights as transmitters and roof. It's like a mini copy of the car. Very cute.

So, the complete list will be:
MB
Audi
Porsche
VW

well that sucks.. I want a damn flip key. I can mill the key out, but the grooves down the sides would be a biatch

Got a new Volvo last week, it also had the switchblade key. The Audi key is pretty similar in width to my e36 key. hmm..

If you have the BMW alarm on an e36 can you use the new keys from the later e39 on your car? They have the same cut, right? I dont know about the programing in the key, is it compatible with the older alarm that was on 95 e36s?

Here (http://www.geocities.com/sebeck26/Switchblade_Files/index.htm) is a page that shows how to make a switchblad key if you have an older model VW. You can buy the fob off ebay for $20-$30. If the BMW key would fit in the slot then it is possible to do this and replace the VW emblem with a BMW one.

where did you hear this from, chris?
I know that the E46 keys will not work with the E36.

I didn't hear about it anywhere, I just love the BMW key that goes along with the later 5ers. I pretty sure that the key on the e46 is center cut(like audis and VW's), while the key on e39s are cut like the key i have(95 e36). I was asking if it were possible.

That's funny, I've always thought about getting a newer model key to work on my car. I think the only thing you could do is attempt to do this on your own.

ok
chris, look on ebay, there is a kit for an alarm system that uses a flip key that works on e36 bmws, you will have to cut it and if your car is post 94 (i think) you will have to transplant you chip from your current key to the newer one- simple to do. i dunno about the quality of the flip key from the kit though.
Try it out and let us know how it goes

no no, not the flip key...I hate the flip keys. I was still talking about using the BMW key that comes with the later 5 series....

The only BMW Flip keys I know of were used in the early 90s.. I have had a couple of E32s in stock that used the system.. but it was an anfrared remote.

Watch out...I think that 98 and newer BMW's have the microchip in the key. So, unless you can get that put in too, your new key isn't going to do you any good.

The chip is linked up to the starter kill...or so some alarm guy told me at Stellar.

Andrew_KC, the first thing Im doing tomorrow is go to Shelly BMW. I want to see what the guy there thinks first, he'll prob say no. From there, I dk what I will do. I dont know where Im going to get a key, BMW prob wont sell me the key unless I own an e39 5er, so I think this might have to wait till I get back to PA where I can steal the key from and unsuspecting parent.
