Hi-
I searched and found threads with people suffering the same exact problems, but none with a solution unfortunately!
I went to the car today and the radio/nav screen was completely dead and would not turn on. The turn signal indicators in the cluster do not work (outside the lights work thank god).
I checked all the fuses- they're good.
I disconnected the battery for some time and reconnected. Ddnt work.
I'm at a loss here guys, please help me out!
I know I'm not the first one with this problem so I'm hoping someone who has been there and done that can chime in.
Thanks in advance!!
Oh- 2000 540iat, if that matters

Sounds like a possible ignition module failure. Lots of symptoms for it, just search for ignition switch or ignition module.

i'm having similar issues, I made a thread about it.
first, check all fuses.
something along your i-bus circuit is acting screwy - my bet is that you have some DICE audio unit installed. Remove it, see what happens.
My second guess is the light control module ("LCM/CCM" or "LKM").

Thank you. I read several threads on the ignition switch and, although I have some of the issues, I do not have all the others people are explaining. I may have to start there though.

Yes, I read your thread as well, good info.
I did check all of my fuses; they're good.
I hear ya on the I-bus; but I have no DICE audio, it's all stock. That's why I disconnected the battery in hopes of clearing the circuits. no go.
Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback

Possibly same as my 540i. Check the LCM?

Not exactly, I just have a dead radio entirely and no TS indication in dash.
Thanks for the link!

Thank you.
Is there a procedure for checking the LKM?
I spoke with a master tech today and he told me this could be related to 1000 different things as seemingly insignificant as a window switch in these cars. Not very comforting!:(

IN an effort to find the issue, I once again disconnected the battery cables and let it sit overnight this time. In the AM, I reconnected ther cable and the car did not start and was not able to be jumped started. I did not think the battery could be the issue b/c it was less than a year old Interstate. Well- turns out that it was! New battery, and all electrical issues have disappeared.
Thanks to all for the help.

Low voltage can do crazy things.
However, it may have simply let all the electric bits do a full reboot.
From what i've read and discussed with BMW techs, the way to do a quick reboot is to remove both battery terminals from the battery and touch them together. My understanding is that this allows all the capacitors and/or other stored energy to discharge [safely] so that it isn't keeping the system "up".
Also, for future reference, the LKM can be definitively checked with the proper hardware, BMW uses the GT1 and/or DIS to view the I-bus signal through an oscilliscope.
Check this for a good read:

There is a lot of debate about this, even amongst the techs themselves. I'm all for removing the terminals and letting the capacitors discharge, but by touching the terminals together you are in fact shorting them and by doing so risk damaging them. IMO I'd rather just disconnect the terminals, play with some buttons and turn on the lights in an effort to discharge them fully. Maybe I'm just a p*$$y :D
Low voltage does do crazy things, but you're right- who knows wtf was really going on, I'm just happy it's fixed for the meantime! :buttrock
Thanks again for all the advice

well, "shorting" the system in this case [without the power of the large battery] acts more like an equalizer.
now, if I can only solve my issue.

Have you had much rain lately? I've been having the same trouble with my Touring and it turns out that water was entering the CD changer compartment and dripping into the amplifier. The water appears to have been entering under the gasket that seals the tailgate and making its way behind the D pillar trim on the driver side. It was then dripping onto the ZKW module behind the trim, and then into the amp and changer.
There was a nasty mess of dirt, pine needles, leaves, and dead bugs under and around the tailgate gasket that I believe was somehow blocking the water flow during rain and then somehow causing it to back up and leak into the cabin. It sounds far fetched, I know. But after spending an entire weekend examining it, it's the only explanation that seems plausible.
I removed the gasket and thoroughly cleaned it and the body flange, then added some black RTV to help seal it. We've had one rainstorm since then, and so far, no leaks.
Anyway, what I'm getting at it is make sure you aren't getting any water in that compartment that could be shorting the amp and ZKW module.

any short in the i-bus system can take down anything and/or everything that communicates with/through it.
