what would you do?
I was going to sell the 535 instead of fixing it up. However after my friends and I got to talking we're going to tear into it over the winter and turn it into a show car for our shop.
It needs paint work, so instead of just doing a repsray we thought something a little more wilder was in order. I had an idea to do a graffitti spary job on the whole car. Similar in style to the e36 racing art car BMW did awhile back. I was also thinking maybe a RedBull or BMW racing paint job as well.
I'm up for suggestions. Give me your best ideas. We have an airbrush artist so really anything is possible.

for a DD I'd do Pearl white...everything.
I saw a Porsche 15+ years ago that was flat black with gloss black 'spades' all over it. Subtle - yet ridiculous. I like to see variations on monochromatism.
For a advertisement car red white and blue always look good. I used to have lots of pics of aircrushed cars I've done - but somehow I've lost them all.

Huh?
You said it's a shop, and you want to do something with the car for the shop.
That said, if you're going to go somewhat wild with it, it should express the attitude the shop has, and tie it into the paint. That's why I asked for a website....background info.

I fixed it. It was a combination of flat black, with gloss-black spades.

I like that idea, but not sure how I could tie the shop name into the paint scheme.

I'd stay away from sponsor-type paint jobs. In the first place, the "sponsor" might not like it and legally block you from showing the car in public (that stuff is trademarked, you know). Secondly... so what? If there are Red Bull cars running around, what makes yours different?
(And that includes BMW-styled influences. IMHO. If you can't do better than that E24 above, I wouldn't even deign to go there.)
I think Chip Foose is the best all-around two-tone designer in the biz, and if you watch his show you can see how he does it. Not that the E34 lends itself to a two-tone paint job, but there is always potential for someone with some tasteful imagination to figure it out. Well done, tasteful subtlety always trumps "HEY, look at ME" bling.
I used to dislike the Alpina pinstripe treatment, but it's period-correct and distinctly represents what they are and what they do. I've come to appreciate it. You might expand on that look: fill in the pinstripes with a complimentary color...?
Orrrrr... Satin black all over with gloss black roundels scattered about...? :lol

Backround: The truck is owned by a former Marine. His last name is Merica. He started out enlisted and then became an officer. When he was promoted to Captain, they started calling him Captain America for obvious reasons. The truck was painted in desert tan and then airbrushed. The hood is the Captain America pic you see and the tailgate has USMC on it. The truck needs some more work done to it, but it's an awesome paint job. Our airbrush guy does really good work.
So really just about anything I can come up with, we can paint.

Honestly if its a 535ia, which it seems to be, anything other than a solid color (and not too wild) is going to be gross.

Right now the car is an automatic. I have a 535im sitting out back of the shop waiting to donate the 5 speed swap. I've been back and forth on what I was going to do with the car, but we have decieded to tear it down and build it up.
Here's the tentative plan:
1. 5 speed swap
2. Brake upgrade (850 4 piston front, 540 rear maybe)
3. All new supsension pieces and poly bushings
4. Sways and strut braces
5. Miller MAF and WAR chip
5. Various pieces powder coated under the hood (intake, valve cover, etc)
6. Lowered (haven't decieded how yet)
7. Staggered rims and tires
8. Tinted lights all the way around
9. Redo interior. Possibly doing a red/black suede theme
10. Complete stereo system. Amps, subs, tv or 2
11. Ebony wood floor in trunk w/ full size spare
12. Possible half roll cage in the rear
13. Paint and body work. May do some hood vents and a body kit. Would like to do M5 bumpers if I can find them.
14. Nitrous.
The idea is for it to be a rolling showroom of what our shop can do. I know a lot of things will be for looks only (like the cage), but it will show that we can do it. We may possibly turbo it next year and continue adding bits and pieces to keep it fresh.

Like crap. The black works so well because the gloss is SO reflective. You can see everything in it.
Think of the jobs you have the highest potential of attracting to your business. Are they super complicated $25000 jobs or really cool and sophisticated 2 tone with pinstripe work $12000 jobs or some combination inbetween like a foose flame job on the hood or sides with really nice solids or pearls elsewhere on the car. I'd rather do 4 of the cheaper jobs per month than one of the more expensive every two.
I find that a paint job well done with top of the line materials will make you the most money per job. ( I use Galsurit and BASF Diamont exclusively) If it's done right on your car it will also attract lots of new clients as this is a much larger market in the real world.
Think about it: How many professional athletes and drug dealers do you really have access to? Maybe alot I don't know but a tasteful but very unique paint job will attract people with money to spend and cars that need all sorts of work.
Think "Car Show" not Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift.
The people that want the crazy stuff never have any money anyway.
Anyway that's my $.02.

I like the whole gloss on satin thing.
a friend of mine did a gloss black flame hugged by a white pinstripe on a satin black truck. It looked pretty killer in my opinion, and could be really nice if done carefully on a nice car.
(The white-ish on the hood is just wax.. that went away.)

Echoing an idea already mentioned, I wanted to one-time build a site and have the site take donations and suggestions for a paint job (http://touchuppaintonline.com/BMW) on my car (at the time a 280Z lol). but it never materialized for me. maybe you'll have better luck tho!

Pearl white with either dove grey or lipstick red interior. But that's my taste.
Look at what your customers are requesting and what they are DRIVING, the E34 while convenient might not be a good venue. As a salestool it needs to appeal to your paying customers not necessarily yourself and certainly not us.
