View Full Version : What tires come with sport option on 335d

I am about to buy a 335d. I will probably go with the sport option, but BMW doesn't really tell you what kind of tires you get with that option. They say something like high-performance, but one man's high performance is another man's dog. Can anyone tell me what makes and models have actually come with that option?
Many thanks,

BMW contracts with more than 1 tire manufacturer, so they do not guarantee which tires come on a specific car. That being said, it is high performance run flats that come with the sports package. and the are probably the Bridgestone Potenza. I am not sure if anyone is getting the Micheling PS2 ZP runflats.
So in short, what you get is what you get, no way to influence that.

Thanks, I may forego the package and do it myself...

The Sports Package comes with more than just the tires (ie suspension), so you may want to go with the Package and make modifications from there. I don't have the "d" (mine is a 2009 335i) but has 225/40R18 on the front and 255/35R18 on the back. Tires are summer Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFTs. Good luck with the new ride!!

Oh, I realize that there is more to it than that, but that is the biggest part of the expense. I really hate to spend that much on something that I really want to throw away <G>!

Not sure how you came up with that conclusion. The tire wheel upgrade is probably less than 50% of the cost of the sports package. But if you don't care for the rest of the package then yeah why get it to get the upgraded wheels/tires, just go aftermarket.

Do the 335D come with manual trans?

Nope.
The tires are the smallest component of the sports package. Off the top of my head I can think of:
Sports seats - worth the entire cost by themselves
Sport suspension
Sport steering wheel
Shadowline trim - depending on exterior color this could be a downside
Different wheels
Performance tires

zactly.....just run with it and then replace the tires after the fact. I was able to sell the runflats that came with my CPO within a few months as many require runflats on return of lease.....so they can get it for cheap from people wanting to sell them.

My d had the Potenza RE050 RFTs...I don't know of other d's having a different tire than the Potenza RFT. It's not the best gripping tire out there...it seems the ContiSport2's I have on my 540i/6 grip better....but then again, the 540i only has 282 ft-lbs of torque, not 425! :D
cheers

My non-sport d came with ContiProContact SSR 225/45, of course on 17x8's

Should have mentioned that my comment was Sport-specific. ;)

It looks like they have switched to Michelin Pilot Sports now for 2010.
My '10 335d has them and the other 2 335d's at the BMW Performance Center had them as well.

Hiren,
I noticed you have an STI, I also have one. Its a 2004 with 26,000 miles and is basically just like new. Ive been looking at 335i and 335D thinking I still want a reasonably fast car but maybe a little less kid racer car.
How do you think the 335D compares to the STI? Is it a lot slower and is the tradeoff in civility worth it. My AX car is a hot rodded Porsche 964 C2 that is nearing RS spec so the 335I or D would be a daily driver and not an AX or track car.
Thanks
Craig

I also have an 04, but with about 60k miles now and wishing it looked like new! It was my daily driver, but now has too many modifications for it to be a nice, reliable daily driver.
The 335d is the perfect daily driver that feels normal until you give it some more throttle and you feel all that tq on tap. It's definitely not lacking in power, yet I average 30mpg! If you're replacing the STi with a 335, I think the only thing you'll miss is the traction! It feels and most likely is faster than a stock STi above 30mph.
Get the i if you plan to mod it. Get the d if you're content with the power and want efficiency.

Thanks for your input Hiren. My STI isnt quite stock either but it isnt so harsh I cant drive it daily. I need to go by a BMW dealer and drive a 335i. I havent seen them have a 335d yet. Im lusting after the 335i with a few mods, I think I would like it way better than the STI. Im getting tired of every kid on the planet wanting to race me.

You can also mod a d. $700 puts you into 300 hp / 500 ft-lb territory (http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=vacmotors&StoreType=BtoC&Count1=953029811&Count2=870170235&CategoryID=166&Target=products.asp)...not shabby. :redspot

I mean really mod it! It'll be hard getting the d to trap 115+ while still keeping the DPF, urea injection, etc. It's much easier for the i to get there.

Stock, d's don't trap too far from an i, I've seen 105-107's, which aren't bad and VAC would probably put you into 110-112 territory (and still get 40+mpg on the way home!), but it's all a wash anyway if you do 1/4's for fun...bracket is much more rewarding than kicking a modded SRT-4. :D

Wow, I would have thought the d would trap around 99-100 as magazines have shown. I'll see what I can do at my local 1/4 mi track pretty soon.

correction to my last, the 105-107 was tuned...stock at 100-101's.

If you do what I did, you ask for the tires you want (PS2 ZPs, in my case).
I was very clear to the CA that if my car came with anything else from the factory, I wanted the dealership to put them on my car. The car came with...well, I don't know, actually, so they took off a set of ZPs from a E92 M Sport, and swapped them with mine...so, I got the tires, and 193Ms, to boot.
