View Full Version : pulling slightly to left when braking

New rotors, new pads. Pads are/were not worn unevenly. New tires, fresh alignment. Doesn't pull left or right when I'm not braking. It doesn't pull very hard under braking, but it's enough that, when stopping from 70 mph or so, I'd end up in the next lane if I let go of the steering wheel.
Besides calipers/lines, what would be able to cause this in the front suspension? Or rear suspension for that matter.

When did you last check your alignment on the front axle? (caster, camber, toe in/out) etc?
An incorrect alignment on the front axle may cause it.
Though i'm thinking that it may be that you haven't driven too far with the new brakes? You gotta "break" them in first.
If you had though i guess it could be incorrect pressure going out to the calipers. (like one of the calipers is harsh)

if its only when you brake you have a brake problem, possible calipers or worse abs. has it done this since you changed your brakes or before?

Really hard to answer that question. I got the car off copart (totaled with a hit to the right fender) To make a long story short, there were multiple issues with the suspension, tires and brakes when I got the car. One front tire had evidently been replaced (left front), since it had 50% tread to the other three tire's maybe 10%). Car was pulling quite hard to the right with that setup, so I got it aligned (I know, do suspension fixes first, but I wanted to see where I stood). Still pulled to the right, but not as hard. Now I put on new tires/wheels, and it drifts very slightly to the right, but nowhere near as much. I'm not convinced I have a good alignment, nor am I convinced I have solid suspension components (bushings, ball joints, etc). I was just wondering if there was a possibility that suspension geometry was changing under braking due to worn parts. I was also thinking about rebuilding the calipers, and I have a spare caliper that came off a right front as well in case there are issues.

replace your worn suspension and realign and see where you stand, but if your drifting to the right and brake and go to the left, sounds like a sticking caliper.

Yeah I do have one other symptom that makes me inclined to agree with that. Under light braking at low speeds (I don't notice pulling to the left on light braking) I intermittently have a howling noise coming from one side in the front (like pad vibration) I think it's coming from the left side, but not sure. It makes me think there is uneven pressure going on. Damn.
Oh well, if there weren't issues to fix I wouldn't be having as much fun with the project lol.
