My AC started to turn off on settings 1,2, and 3 but would work on 4. I got a new resistor from bavarian auto but still does it however not as frequently. It is not as often however it still does it. Any reason for this? Could it be a bad resistor from bavarian auto or something else?
This is on a 1992 525i
Thanks for the help!

i dont think freon would have an influence on my fans/AC not working on different settings.

Compressor will cycle on and off if the level is low man.

Does it turn itself off and olny work like that with heat or un A/C'd air?

I have the same problem. It stays off most of them time but if I hit a bump in the road it will sometimes turn back on...

I have the same problem. I think the issue might be with the contacts on the fan speed switch dial. I can make mine work in 1, 2, 3 if I push in or pull out (play with) the fan speed dial. I have been thinking to pull the switch and clean it with electrical contract cleaner. Not sure if it will work, but worth a try.

Also wanted to mention that a few years ago, I was having a similar issue and eventually ended up that it didn't work at all in any of the positions. I had to replace the a/c climate control board which was about $125 at the time.
