2007 328i / 14K miles
Over the last few days, I am hearing a metal clicking noise (more like a metal bottle cap trying to roughly tighten on the metal bottle). So far it is persistent when I drive. I am not sure if it happens when driving fast, but definately at slow speeds I can hear it. It also occurs when I reverse the car.
Did anyone have similar problems? Any suggestions before I take it to the dealership

i might have a video of your issue. here's a quick clip of my e90: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n09TJQv1xto. a clips of other e90s with lifter knocK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pufcjvWviwI, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddxPfshrul0&feature=related. the noise is either coming from your lifters or some other mysterious part that bmw won't be able to find. this knock is pretty common. if it is your vavle lifters knocking (and your engine oil is at operating levels), then bmw will probably end up swapping out your cylinder head if bleeding your lifters doesn't resolve the issue (bleeding: revving your engine to get the lifters properly lubricated :rolleyes). if it isn't, like my case :shifty, bmw will do nothing :(.
just tell bmw that your car is making a metallic knocking sound. they'll know exactly what to look for/do.

There are many posts on this issue. It is a know defect that can require substantial repair. You are under warranty so it will be fixed. Make sure you get a loaner because it will be in the shop for a while. At least 4 days.

I've heard this too a few times - but never really paid attention to it. It seems like my case when the car is warmed up, i do not hear it anymore. If this should problem persist- is this a serious problem for the vehilce?

Had this issue with my 08 328i. Dealer did the bleeding procedure. Didn't work. Dealer did the cylinder head swap out recently. Did the trick! It was in the shop for 5 days. I lived with this for a year and finally made the move to have it replaced. I'm glad I did.

local dealer said the ticking was normal in the vanos system, said it was air built up in the system, and that it was completely normal in these cars....

Go to the dealer, let them hear this, tell them to look up SIB "SI B11 09 07" dated January 2009 and you will get a new cylinder head.

Mine does the same thing when cold, but once up to operating temp noise goes away. Same problem?

I wouldn't worry about it if it goes away after operating temps.
