Too long, like 4 hours. But thats with constant beer breaks and a tiny air compressor that we were constantly waiting on.

also, i scrapped the lip going 60 up a hill, this thing will be off the car by next saturday because its crazy crazy low.

Stiffer and the cornering is better. Not a whole lot. Bavauto springs are close to stock but a little bit stiffer. Noticable difference vs stock. I picked them up for 90$ shipped and its a win. My struts and mounts are in great shape and if something blows, nex will be my replacement

this is a potentially epic thread on the rise...I feel fortunate to have your attention! :stickoutt
I have no preference between coilover or spring/shock combo, I just want the following:
-similar if not better handling than my existing m-tech setup, I corner hard as a hobby and a necessity
-a lower stance than my current setup, although high enough to not fear speed bumps and/or dirt roads
-utmost build quality that won't prematurely wear other front end components or need replacing often
as far as the cost is considered? by no means do I have an endless budget,
but I am willing to pay for quality within reason. I'm not looking to spend thousands.
I don't track the car, I'm not a racing driving, but I do enjoy regular spirited driving.
if you can suggest a setup that can afford me all these traits, consider it done!

eibach or vogtland springs with billie sport shocks and maybe some RD sways....thatll give you what youre looking for
itll ride very similar to what you have now...handle better be a bit lower and you wont have to change your driving style because of bumps or potholes...
I had both eibachs and vogts paired with billie sports and bother were great for someone looking for a mild drop and somewhat better handling capabilities without having to worry about road conditions.
this setup will run you around 700ish give or take
if you have to ask about the quality of eibachs vogtlands or bilstein...well...heh ..you get the idea

Well, coilover setup is the best for hardcore/track driving.
If you are going to go with spring/ shock combo, I would highly recommend H&R/bilstein sport combo. H&R is the stiffest spring set for e34's. Eibachs are second stiffest. Vogtland seems to be in the middle. And bavautos or just a bit stiffer than stock.
So here is my chart, having handling as priority
1.Good coilover setup
2.H&R/Bilstein sport
3.Eibach/Bilstein sport
4.Vogtland/Bilstein sport
5.Bavauto/Bilstein sport
Going with different shocks, like Koni adjustables wont change the picture.

Nice, tiny compressor tanks suck! But I do like me some Bud Heavy... party on.
Good work fellas, 4 hours sounds pretty quick, it took me way longer doing mine by myself and without air tools. The car looks awesome!
btw how much of the bump stops did you cut off? i did 1/3 and i don't think its enough.

We cut nothing off of it
hmmmmm okay then...... maybe my bumpstops have just slid down the shock a bit. Will have to check sometime this week when i go over the all the bolts again to double check i did em up tight.

His bump stops were cracked and separated, so either way they were shorter than brand new stock ones.

Its a volvo lip off a volvo 940 if i can remember right. All you have to do is trim up the edges a bit and then it mounts right up to the bottom of the bumper. I just used wood screws and its held up very well. I love it, very flexible.

We left the spring pads in Steve's car. I have them out on my car though. And when you cut your bump stops, leave just "the tip" if you know what i mean.

Well, coilover setup is the best for hardcore/track driving.
I agree coilovers are best for competitive racers or if you want a REALLY low car. But after years of screwing around with coilovers and running springs that were so stiff that the car was slow on real roads (even if it felt fast), I'd use matched spring/shock combo on any street/HPDE car.
Springs/shocks are install and forget. To benefit from coilovers, you spend lots of time tweaking: camber settings, measuring corner weights and doing math to get the wedge right, etc. And if you want the best handling, the car will look pretty much identical to a car on a sport spring/shock combos and won't corner much better unless you run uncomfortable spring rates. Even there, what's fast on the track (super stiff springs) will be slow on bumpy real world streets.
You can't slam the car and expect good handling. The best ride height for handling is usually only about an inch lower than stock. Lower, and you INCREASE body roll, screw up how camber changes through wheel travel, create bump steer, etc. To correct the body roll, you need stiffer springs just to get back on the same playing field as a car near stock height. But, that limits suspension travel, so the car skitters all over on bad roads. You're fighting against physics.
Almost every production-based race car is tall compared to the really low cars you see here, because when the car was designed, the suspension mounting points and geometry were chosen to match a given ride height and weight distribution. Google "roll center vs. center of gravity".

Very well put, I'm glad someone finally points out how super stiff springs on real world roads usually cause more harm than good, and the fact that you mentioned roll centers is an even bigger plus. Now, on too giant staggered tire setups and incorrect swaybar combos. :redspot
