The car wouldn't start for my wife after dropping kids off at school. Went after work to check it out and checked easy stuff like fuses and relays - still no start. I had someone crank it over while I tapped on the fuel pump cover at the fuel tank and suddenly the car started. I then suspect the fuel pump is failing and the cause of the sudden no start issue.

My main question is this - does that sound like a good diagnosis? The flange that I tapped on is acutally the sending unit and the fuel pump is lower inside the tank - so did my tapping the flange cause the pump to free up Anyone had a similar experience?

Yes.. I would say that is a pretty good sign that your pump is failing. It's not uncommon for a fuel pump to 'start' failing as opposed to completely fail.
