Hello, I just got a green 1998 BMW 540 automatic and I am in the processing of modding it, but I want to know if the rear exhaust's from an m5 can be moddified to fit on my car making it an dual exhaust. Can I use a y-pipe or do I have to cut into the fuel tank?
I just sold my 2000 328i sedan today and am $22,500 richer. BTW I'm from the e46fanatics board ;)

Umm..
Cutting into the fuel tank is never a good idea.
I'd be looking for something like a Remus setup or some other aftermarket exhaust. Congrats on the ne car BTW.. Oxford Green maybe? That's what color my E38 is :D
Dito what Wiseguy said. If you want more aggressive sound and better performance, get a cold air intake. If you wanna go big time Dinan supercharger!

welcome to bf.c!
as for exhaust, eisenmann sells a quad exhaust set up. the left side has a muffler with tips, and a pipe goes around the spare tire well to the right to another set of tips. this one guy had it well documented with pics, but i can't find the site. it involved minimal modifications, such as banging the spare tire well a little and of course cutting the bumper for the tips.

To get the quad look as the M5 eisenmann is the only one that offers the "look" aspect. They have a kit for the M5 bumper on non M5 cars which basically routes a "faux" pipe to the other side with exhasut tips. Nothing really comes out of there but the look is there.
To get a fully functional quad exhaust you need to either replace the trunk floor with the M5 trunk floor, which is long and $$$, or massage out the wheel well for enough clearance. Either of which you will be losing your spare tire.
Once you got that done you can get a X pipe or fabricate your own...
Or you could do what this guy did.. http://home.comcast.net/~samans/newbumper_copy.jpg which is get a Hamann M5 exhaust and have a muffler shop relocate the canisters further back up. This way you can retain your spare....

i know the eisanmann isn't a true quad exhaust, however, from my understanding, the pipe that leads to the right side of the car is connected to the muffler on the left. :dunno

On the picture you posted above yes, its a funcitoning right side. On their system for the M5 rear bumper it is not.

the system you have pictured is for the m5/m-tech rear bumper, correct?
this system also looks like it's connected to the left side.
just trying to clarify, as i have not seen or heard these systems for myself. thanks.

Correct its welded on the main pipe but not tapped in. Notice the right side exhaust, the tube is crimped but never split. It's a "faux" right side. Also if it was a real system, it would be coming from the muffler not tapped into the pipe before the exhaust gets into the muffler. Small observations..
