when the air isnt on the ac compressor is just an idler pulley, though it does come on a little during defrost to dehumidify too. youll lose a little weight and free up some room in the engine compartment though i suppose. with less weight the power you got will do more but youll never notice it.

You'll loose 50 lbs or so, and take off the resistance of the pulley.
I generally keep AC on my cars... When I'm sitting on the track, waiting for my session to start... Screw not having AC... I'm sweating profusely in my helmet... naw screw that... turn on the AC for a few minutes and back off when I pull out.

Do you notice a raise in temp after your run?
Also, I took mine out on my non vanos 325i.. I needed to replace the compressor anyway. I must say though.. I did feel a slight increase power. Not huge.. But feels like it puts power down more efficiently. That being said.. I never had AC in my car, but when I drive my GF's e36 i get very jealous and want it badly.. Especially since I have an hour ride to work and sit in traffic. On hot summer days it really sucks. Especially if it rains. Defrosting with heat in the summer FTL!

If you gain more than 2HP by removing the compressor and even the condensor and dryer I would be amazed. Is there anyone besides God himself that can feel a 2hp difference?

well. the system with condenser, compressor and mounting hardware, including removing the ac pusher fan is about 40 lbs. and installing a lighter spal puller fan after the fan clutch delete will also help.
You'll be adding about 5 h.p., maybe in reduced friction. but the weight reduction does help as well.

if removing a free wheeling bearing in the accesory pulley system will free up 5 horse you should be selling this mod lol. the system only uses power when the ac is on, its a clutched pulley. if you race this car in a class where only stock cars are allowed then 40 pounds might be worth but then youd already know you didnt need the ac anyhow. otherwise youll never know you took it off on your daily driven car. but hey its your car not mine so knock yourself out.

I always thought about doing this since I used my a/c maybe twice this whole summer. It blows out warm air anyway (im guessing because of the fdm). Might do this soon since its about to be winter. Who needs a/c anyway right?

Holy shit! This summer my AC sucks and last summer it was ice cold....and I also didn't have the FDM! Is this why my AC suddenly went pooy???

Well usually if I haven't blown anything up... no... but the car is usually quite hot and needs to be cooled down after every run. I have 2 e-fans on my radiator... I'm about to swap to a aftermarket UUC soon here. There is also special coolant you can run that you almost don't need a fan on the track... its like 80 bucks a bottle tho... Can't remember the name off the top of my head but I do know if you breathe that shit... it'll flat knock you out cold...
Anyways, I believe in AC... thats why I drive a BMW and not a 240sx.
Just saying...

i know that. the friction from the belt itself and the rotating mass does drown out a few ponies, along with the clutch fan. these mods with underdirve pulleys will be of some benefit. Besides, its all on your location. If you live close to the equator, then keep your AC. i don't, i haven't had to use it in years.

That’s what I figured.. I hate the cooling system in the e36's. But any who.. If it is a street car.. I would just keep it in. for me, it wasn’t just a "Freely rotating pulley"... the bearings were beat.. So that’s probably where I saw my increase in putting power down. I have never had a car with AC (my last car was an e30 that I didn’t feel like converting over to r134). That being said these I become very envious of people with it :(
Any more info on that coolant?

if you dont need it, and dont use it, why wouldnt you remove it? I removed A/C compressor, belt, hoses, and even my entire heater core/hvac. total weight lost was probably close to 50lbs, and made the engine bay look a little cleaner and lighter. bring your car to a shop that drains your A/C, (mine was luckily already drained -thanks fishforlife-). Then just unbolted everything you dont need, no need for a DIY thread, its pretty straight forward.

have u even looked at it? not to be a dick but if you work in a shop(your a tech?) you should be able to figure it out. pretty sure all the sixes are the same but could be wrong, the ac compressor has its own belt and tensioner, you could just take off the belt without messing anything else up in the accesory system. if you want it all outta there then unbolt the compressor, lines coming off it to the firewall, and pull the ac condensor out. you could even go as for as topnotch and remove the evaporator, but it doesnt sound like you should try to go that far yourself.

what he said..
plus, you might need to pull off your front bumper to remove the condensor, i had the whole front end of the car off at the time so it was really easy, except 2 bolts snapped. This would take no more than a few hours if your removing just the condensor, belt, and aluminum bracket from under the hood, but if your removing the heatercore/hvac... thats a little more time.
