I posted once before about the oil change interval readout changing the date for next oil change before the first one was due. Now, after going in for the first oil change after one year, I found that not only did the technician not reset the Service Indicator, the mileage interval has gone from 15K in April, to 14K in May, to 3K today. The next oil change date still reads 4/2010. I have put only 3K on the car since the June 1 service. Since I am leasing the car, I really do not give a rat what the indicator says as I have done the oil change on time not mileage; but it still bugs me that the SI computor could be so messed up. Has anyone else have the SI or any other part of the dash OBC screw up like this? I also have probs with the oil level indicator either not working, takes forever to give a readout, or gives a readout within 5 sec when requested. I do not care about this either, as the oil temp gauge, if it really is working correctly, should give me warning something is wrong if it starts to head to the 300 degree mark under normal driving. :confused

has your car been programmed at the dealer ion between these reading. if it has the tech was supposed 2 go back and reset the readings to where they were before he programmed it. during the program the car will sometimes loose that data since it is not that critical. I have seen cars never get oil changes in 50k due to techs not resetting the info correctly. needless to say that car got an eng because of that.

The oil level indicator will work after 15 (FIFTEEN) minutes of running the car. You will NOT get any readout if your car is running for less than 15 minutes. It's in the users manual.

If your car has not been programmed, then the oil change interval will be adjusted based on your driving habits, road condition, ambient temperature...etc. With my car the intervals go from 20,000 km to 23,000km and it is expected to increase up to 29,000 km before I need an oil change. The information is also in the user manual.

Not quite correct, it depends on the oil temperature (among other factors) so if the car had been running before or it is hot outside, it may only take a couple of minutes to update. The fluctuation is not a faulty sensor, it is just a complicated German algorithm :help.

As for the CBS not being reset and the date still showing 04/2010, that is correct. They will not reset the CBS indicator at the one year early oil change interval. This has been described numerous times by one of our resident techs, do a search to get the full details, but in short the date will always display 2 years from the last CBS reset which only happens every 2 years :D.

Understood for the next oil change service date: but why would the service indicator show that the next oil change will be needed in 3K miles, four months and 1K (I was wrong on mileage covered since oil change on my post) miles after the last oil change? BTW. The computor reset the oil change date and mileage on its own, one month before the first one was due.
As for the oil level check, I always check it after I have had the car out, just before I pull into the driveway, as it is a bit steep, so the car is always warmed up. Warm, hot or cold days, the oil level check sequence seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it will not show the oil level at all, regardless of the number of times I try. There is something comforting about being able to check the oil level with a dipstick. If I was purchasing this car, which I will not after the lease runs out, it would be an issue. Since BMW owns the car, I could care less. I follow the guidelines for service in the owner's manual, which at this point is just the oil change.
