Why doesn't BMW make them fold flat? Ever? It's been a constant picking point at customers, journalists and car reviewers including Jeremy Clarkson.

I believe it's because of their penchant for passenger safety through structural integrity. Works for me, though I never want to test the theory.
A "ski pass-though" is all I've seen.

:coolSupports can readily be above and below the seat backs ie rear sill and on frame below. Just being stubborn Germans here. It would be highly utiliterian but then again, this is coming from a company that makes SAV's not SUV's! Realize thru my sarcasm that I own an X5.

Its probably a trade off between comfort and folding flat. A comfortable seat is more important than folding flat. I have never had a complaint, its not a pickup truck after all.
