Got my second oil report back from Blackstone labs today. Still looking good, although I don't think I'll run the 0w-30 Mobil 1, it may have been a bit thin, my wear was a bit above normal...probably stick with the Mobil 1 10w-40 as factory recommended. Good all in all though!

how often do you usually change your oil?

Mobil 1 10W40 is the high mileage formula. They don't list a specific change interval but suggest lower numbers like 3000-5000 for the first few oil changes if you have lots of sludge. I just changed my oil to that version and I think I will run an 8000 mile interval (filter change at 4000). Don't know if I should get a report at around 4000 or just wait for 8000. Previous owner used Lucas synthetic oil.

Clumpymold had a thread on his car for sale and posted his Blackstone report. 12000 mile interval and they said it looked fine. They recommended to run 14000 miles next time. His report listed Mobil 1 10W30 but Blackstone questioned whether the weight was listed correctly.

I went 11k last change on Mobil 1 5w30 and had Blackstone check it for the first time. Iron was slightly over but they said that's typical and not to cause concern. Everything else was in spec and the oil had plenty of life in it still. They suggested I go 13k next time, and I'll definitely get it tested again.

I always change my oil filter about halfway through an oil cycle. 157 thousand and climbing on the M52.

How much does it cost to get one of these reports done?

I used them YEARS ago, they been around a long time. At that time( 7-9 years?) it was $75.00.

Since I have to constantly put more oil in (every 1k miles) I only change the oil filter.

$25 for basic test for contaminants and wear. $32.50 total for them to test everything and see how much life is left in the oil.

Considering the cost of Mobil 1 (even from Walmart), getting data that says it's safe for me to run 13,000+ miles between changes, as well as checking for problems, I think it easily pays for itself.

It beats "So and so told me I should change my oil every this many miles." God knows where they got their numbers from. This is based on data for my car, my oil, my driving habits.

Wow, good deal. Thanks. I think I'll be using them at my next oil change.
