window problems??

I just got a 94 325i the other day and the only problem with it is that the drivers side window is seriously messed up. when I press the down button it tries to go up and when i press up it goes down an inch then stops then i just have to keep hitting up 20 times till it's all the way down, then the same problem going up. I know a guy the next town over is parting out the same car so if I know what to replace it would be cheap and easy. anyone have any ideas? I've read it could be the button itself (can't test this cause the button for the drivers side has a different harnes then all the other ones :/), or the motor/reguator. Any help is apreciated!
