View Full Version : Looking at 2 Bimmers, E39 540i or E46 328i?

I am looking to buy a BMW again. Im looking at a 97 540i 6spd with 150k in decent condition with springs, and style 19s, but the AC works only sometimes (anyone have a clue what that could be?) and the rear window is off the track. Im thinking i can take it for $4000 tops prolly less. The other car is a 99 328i sport 5spd with 170k. All stock. Just has a few dings that could use PDR. Nothing major. I could get it for $4.5 tops prolly more like $4k. The 540i is what most people would say i think but its about 3 hrs away and im waiting on some pictures before i drive to get/see it. The other i can see tomorrow. Im afraid if i wait to see the 540i the 328i is going to be gone. Advice?

Can you live with losing $50/$100 bucks??? Go look at the E46 and leave a deposit so it doesn't go anywhere..That's if you think you can go see the 540 within the next day after..You don't want to leave the seller of the E46 hanging more than that, as he could lose a possible sale to someone else...Just a thought...

I think i may have to go with the e46. The e39 guy wont seem to email any pics! Im going to wait it out tomorrow and maybe ill hear something back....

The 540i also is running dumps and springs and the ac issue is a bad compressor....

The 540i will be well worth the minimal amount of trouble you have to go through to get it.

Personally, if all things were equal, I'd go with a 540i.

Thats what im thinking... plus it has less miles and it save me money because i was going to do the same modifications anyway. I can get a used compressor online for like $150 too and window shouldnt be hard to fix either. The only thing im worried about is the exterior as far as dings and dents.

Well it turns out im not buying either. I looked at the E46 and it had tons of hail damage. The E39 turns out to be a rebuilt title. Im SOL lol
